We are using a router for a home network.

Not long ago, I thought I saw WinFixer popup on this computer. Now there are many popups occuring when the browser isn't even up and running. They just appear even when no one is at the computer, and no windows are open. Sometimes, the browser is clicked to a valid link, but it goes to a porn ad instead. This even happened when I clicked a link here at TomCoyote. Clicking BACK and reclicking the link worked so far. But it still continued to occur at times.

I ran Spybot first and it came up with something called Smithfraud-c which it could not remove. (tried three times, rebooting each time)
I then ran Ad-Aware SE Personal and it found 22 Data Mining items which were successfully removed, but 2 items were unable to be removed. They were listed as Download.dlef (might be misspelled). But they had the SAME registry key as what Spybot found for Smitfraud-c.

Gonna have to talk to my kid about safer browsing grrrr.

Any help would be much appreciated, Thanks in advance.

First of all, Thank you so much for helping me, LDTate.
I understand the depth of how busy you all must be.

I would also like to correct a statement above, regarding what I thought was a misspelling. The Ad-Aware SE Personal hit it got (which is at the same registry/address as the Spybot hit of Smitfraud-c) is actually called w32.trojandownloader.delf

Please download the trial version of ewido anti-malware 3.5 here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then please run Ewido, click on the Scanner run a full scan and let it clean everything it finds. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

The forum is run by volunteers who donate their time and expertise.

I suggest you do this:

use Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed:
Viewpoint Manager

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

So far it appears the performance has improved tremendously as far as slow load times, and booting.
I also have not seen a recurrance of hijacking since the Ewido cleanup. But then I really haven't had much time to put this system through its paces and watch for it yet. So far, so good though.

Here is a fresh HijackThis log from right now:

Before I click delete in regedit window, I just want to clarify.
I have two hits from the search on clbcatix.dll:
First entry says
Name[color=#3333FF] - (default)
Data[color=#3333FF] - C:\WINDOWS\clbcatix.dll

Second entry says
Name[color=#3333FF] - ThreadingModel
Data[color=#3333FF] - Apartment

Am I supposed to delete both these entries? Or only the first one with the clbcatix.dll name?

There was only one instance in the registry of clbcatix.dll
I deleted it, and F3 produced no other finds.

MS IE browser responding pretty quick now when compared to before. Reboot is faster than this morning.

Good Job :thumbup:

Log looks good :D :thumbup: How is it running any issues?

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start> My Computer, select the Tools menu and then Folder Options, after the new window appears select the View tab…]
This time select the: Restore Defaults
Select: Apply, and click OK

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Super! Thanks ever so much for your valuable time. I will download those products, and read the suggested reading. (I will also foist this upon my son to read as well, as computer surfing homework haha) Question: If I have a router, do I still need to download the free firewall?

It depends if your router has a built-in Firewall.

Router = Speedstream SS2624 Under "Security" on the Router's page, I have "Firewall" enabled against Denial of Service, Threshold High. "ICMP (Ping)" selection of "Respond to ICMP (ping) on WAN interface" is not selected.
