Hi EFagan;

You did fine. You put it right on my monitor. However, you posted an old log from January 28. We need to see current logfiles that reflect the condition of your PC at this time. Please, no more old logs.

You may want to print out, or make a copy of these instructions and place them in a Notepad file on your desktop, to review as you work.

Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it cannot be run from a Zip file or from Temporary folders because the backups will be deleted. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

1. Please go to you're 'My Documents' folder, right-click and select 'New > Folder' then name the folder 'HJT'.

2. Copy and paste HijackThis.exe to the new folder.

Next:
Go to control Panel–>Add/Remove Programs and uninstall/remove….

crystalys media

Next:
Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.
Please do not run a scan yet.

Next:
Please download, install, and update the free version of Ewido Security Suite:
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  • When you run Ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • From the main Ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  • After the update finishes, the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"
  • Exit Ewido. DO NOT run a scan yet.
If you do not already have Ad-Aware SE 1.06 installed, follow these download and setup instructions. Also check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Again, do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Remain in safe mode until advised to reboot into normal mode.

Now scan with Hijack This and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

    O2 - BHO: HomepageBHO - {4da4616d-7e6e-4fd9-a2d5-b6c535733e22} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp5BC7.tmp

Click on Fix Checked when finished.

Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

    Next:
Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them:

    c:\program files\crystalys media\cm.dll",MakeInjection
    C:\Documents and Settings\Eric\198_150_ni_1.exe
    c:\counter.cab

    Next:
Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen. Your desktop and icons will disappear and then reappear again — this is normal.
Wait for the tool to complete and Disk Cleanup to finish — this may take a while; please be patient.

Next, run Ad-aware and perform a full scan. Remove everything found.

    Now open Ewido Security Suite
    • Click on Scanner
    • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives. You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one. If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
    • Save the report to your desktop, to be posted in this topic later.
    • Close Ewido
Next go to Start -> Control Panel, click Display -> Desktop -> Customize Desktop -> Web -> Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Restart your computer in normal mode and enable hidden files.

Run the Panda online virus scan at http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

    - Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
    - A new window will open…click the Check Now button
    - Enter your Country
    - Enter your State/Province
    - Enter your e-mail address and click send
    - Select either Home User or Company
    - Click the big Scan Now button
    - If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
    - It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
    - When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
    - When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location, like your desktop.

Finally, restart your computer once more, and please post a new HijackThis log as well as the log from the Ewido scan and the log from the smitRem tool, which will be located at C:\smitfiles.txt.

Let us know if any problems persist.

Please use the Post Reply feature to reply, so I will be notified.

Note: Please do not edit the new HJT log. We need to see the entire log, without revisions.

Hi EFagan;

Please print, or copy and paste this text into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to review as your work. This will reduce the possibility of errors. Please read this text, before beginning.

You are running more than one anti-virus package; please disable one of them, leaving the other one alone. Having two or more antivirus solutions on the same machine can lead to them conflicting and thus offering less protection, not more.
I would suggest Uninstalling (Grisoft)AVG7 (all entries) in Control Panel–>Add/Remove Programs.

I note that some of the removals were previously advised. If you have any problems deleting, or removing anything, please advise me so my directions can be revised.

Please go to Control Panel–>Add/Remove Programs and Uninstall all instances of the following Programs.

Grisoft
AVGFRE~1
crystalys media

and the following are OPTIONAL.
Viewpoint
Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player
Viewpoint Toolbar

Next:
Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Close all Windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Hi EFagan;

Please download, install, update and scan your system with the free version of Ewido trojan scanner:
  1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  2. When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK.
  3. From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"), click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so time to go get a drink and a snack….
  5. If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
  6. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file.
  7. Please save the Ewido report, to be posted here later.

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
    Ewido manual updates

The trial version of Ewido works like a full featured version for 14 days, after that the only features that will not work are, autoupdate and realtime protection. It will still be able to be updated with the link above and be used to scan and remove undesirables.

    Next:
Please set your system to show all files; please see here if you're unsure how to do this.

Close all Windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.
Place a check against each of the following.

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [198_150_ni_1] "C:\Documents and Settings\Eric\198_150_ni_1.exe"

Click on Fix Checked when finished.

Reboot into Safe Mode: please see here if you are not sure how to do this.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Eric\198_150_ni_1.exe
If you were unable to delete any of the files then please follow these additional instructions:
Download Pocket Killbox and unzip it; save it to your Desktop.
Run it, and click the radio button that says Delete a file on reboot. For each of the files you could not delete, paste them one at a time into the full path of file to delete box and click the red circle with a white cross in it.
The program will ask you if you want to reboot; say No each time until the last one has been pasted in whereupon you should answer Yes.
    Let the system reboot.

Reboot , enable hidden files and post a fresh Hijack This log in this topic, along with the Ewido report.

Please use the Add Reply feature to reply, so I will be notified.

Note: Please do not edit the new HJT log. We need to see the entire log, without revisions.

Hi EFagan

Looks like Ewido removed some real bad ones from your PC and System Restore is loaded with bad ones.

Here is another Program that you could easily do without.

Description: Newer name for BroadJump Foundation Client (BJCFD) from BroadJump.com, now Motive. The software collects information on your Internet activity and sends it to your ISP so that your ISP can serve you advertisements related to the type of sites you visit.

Please note: This is a Program, so BroadJump [BJCFD] must also be Uninstalled/Removed in Control Panel–>Add/Remove Programs.

The following are recommended fixes:

Close all Windows and browsers, leaving only HijackThis running.

Place a check against each of the following.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BJCFD] C:\Program Files\BroadJump\Client Foundation\CFD.exe
Click on Fix Checked when finished.

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them:
C:\Program Files\BroadJump\Client Foundation\CFD.exe

Then, please reboot.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if Malware infects a computer with this operating system the Malware can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

So how did I get infected in the first place?

Safe surfing. :wavey:
