Next, launch Notepad, and copy/paste all the blue REGEDIT below to it
Save in: Desktop
File Name: fixme.reg
Save as Type: All files
Click: Save

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\
"Shell"="Explorer.exe"

then doubleclick fixme.reg and allow it to run and merge.

Reboot and see if that fixes it.

The PC still cannot get through the boot sequence.

Are you saying everything you first posted is still the same? Is Task Manager working now?

Thats right. Nothing has changed, that I have noticed, in the PC performance since my first post. Task Manager has always been accessible during the boot sequence using a Ctrl-Alt-Del. I have been using Task Manager as the vehicle to push the boot sequence through the point in which it gets frozen. To do so I have been running explorer.exe from the Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386\directory. The system locks up during boot up just after logging on to XP.

There are 3 columns (Name, Type, and Data). I dont have anything that says Shell=Explorer.exe, but there is a line that has Shell for the Name, REG_SZ for the Type, and Explorer.exe for the Data. I assume this is what you meant by Shell=Explorer??

Please copy the contents of the following quote box into Notepad: Don't forget to add the REGEDIT4

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"WallpaperStyle"=-
"Wallpaper"=-
"NoDispBackgroundPage"=-
"NoDispAppearancePage"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"Wallpaper"=-
"WallpaperStyle"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoActiveDesktopChanges"=-
"NoActiveDesktop"=-
"NoSaveSettings"=-
"ClassicShell"=-
"NoThemesTab"=-

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\ActiveDesktop]
"NoChangingWallPaper"=-

Save it to your desktop as fixme.reg

Then, locate fixme.reg on your desktop and <double-click> it.

You will receive a prompt similar to: "Do you wish to merge the information into the registry?".

Answer 'Yes' and wait for a message to appear similar to "Merged Successfully"

Reboot.

Can you access/change the desktop now?

Cant access/change the desktop now. I'm getting a "rundll32.exe - bad image" error that states "The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\System32\cscui.dll is not a valid Windows image. Please check this against your installation diskette."

Copy explorer.exe to windows folder

Open C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\explorer.exe <--right click and select copy
Open C:\windows <--right click in the folder and select paste

See if that helps.

Well that took care of the bootup issue :) . There are still a number of addiitonal issues, including the locking-up of browser. Among other things: 1. During startup I get a "KBD.exe-Bad Image" error that states: The application or DLL C:\WINDOWS\System32\MSVCIRT.dll is not a valid Windows image. 2. The PC cannot be defragmented, the defrag window opens, but when the defrag button is pressed, nothing happens. 3. The PC doesnt recognize my printer and will not allow me to remove and reinstall it. When I tried to reinstall it I got an error that stated: "There was an error nstalling this hardware: hp officejet d series. An error occured during the installation of this device. The RPC server is unavailable." 4. Have gotten rundll32.exe errors, but I forget what the error states. Next time I'll write it down. Any ideas on these issues?? Thanks for your help thus far!!!
