My PC started acting strangly a couple of weeks ago when I noticed it was taking a long time (seemingly freezing) after inputting a string into a search engine. In addition to the search engine freezing I started to notice that some of the icons on my desktop were missing or that the paths to which the icons were linked had changed. I ran a number of spyware and antivirus tools but none of them seemed to affect the problems I was having. After running the last cleaning tool, TrendMicro Housecall, and then rebooting, the PC booted and I logged on then the screen just showed my wallpaper (no icons or toolbars). Now this happens everytime I reboot the PC. The only thing that I could access when viewing the wallpaper is the Windows Task Manager (ctrl+alt+del). I tried to run a number of programs from the Task Manager using the "Run" option in the drop down menu, but none of them would run until I ran C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\explorer.exe, which caused the rest of the boot sequence to run, after which I can see and use my desktop. The PC still runs slowly, the icons and links are a mess, and I can only access my PC through this strange path through the task manager. Needless to say, I need help in a bad way! Still having the same problem as was deescribed below. I'm starting to belive its a registry problem within windows\system32, but I havent been able to validate that. I rescanned again with HijackThis and the log is below. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED PROFILE USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED PROFILE USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Except for the reset web settings. I'm not able to notcie any difference. Still getting a freezing of the browser and the boot sequence is the same.

No, the OS was an OEM installation.

regedit.exe /e c:\export.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\explorer.exe"

Then hit enter.

Then use Notepad to go to c:\export.txt

If you cannot find the file, please let me know that fact.

click Start> Search> All Files and Folders type in export.txt in the search window, tap enter key. Remember where it finds it. Then go to that location and double click export.txt. It should open in Notepad. Click Edit> Select All> click Edit> select Copy, then paste it here.

I've tried to run this a number of times, but it doesnt seem to be working. I've shut down the PC and tried again, and there is still no export.txt file being generated.
