Hi all -
I was recently infected by SpySheriff, and I cleaned it with Ad-aware and SpyBot S&D, but there are still weird things going on with my PC. Can you please review this log and let me know what is bad?
Examples of bag things happening:
- Multiple IE processes running
- ZoneAlarm (free) shows "Server Error" message and doesn't catch traffic
- I had random redirects to websites, but seems OK now

Thanks,
- cameraguy

Hello cameraguy, welcome to the forum. Sorry about the delay in responding :( If you still need help, Scan again with HijackThis, and copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Scan again? Why would the results be different? I have not changed anything since I posted the original log. Thanks, - cameraguy (self proclaimed spyware newbie)

Have you used the PC on the internet in the last 7 days? If you have any bad guys, they add "Stuff"
every time you use the internet.
Here is the latest scan (yesterday - no internet since).
Thanks,

You still have some worms. This is one:
Name Filename Status Description
BatSrv batserv2.exe X Added by the WORM_LOCKSKY.T mass-mailing worm. This infetion also creates the file C:\Windows\SYSC.EXE.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Please download the trial version of ewido anti-malware 3.5 here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then please run Ewido, click on the Scanner run a full scan and let it clean everything it finds. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.
Hi LDTate -
The Ewido seemed to work very well, and it removed a lot items it identified as threats.
I'm still having problems with ZoneAlarm, but I will try another uninstall/reinstall and see if it works this time (It did not work before.)

Can you take a look at my latest HijackThis and Ewido logs and let me know what I still need to remove?
Thanks,
- cameraguy (Dan G.)

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED PROFILE USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hey LDTate -
I did everything you said, and things are looking good.
As far as I can tell there are no more spyware/malware symptoms on my PC!

One weird thing that happens especially at startup but other times as well is that the hard drive starts working like crazy but TaskManager doesn't show anything out of the ordinary.
I can live with that though - it's better than porn/gambling ads popping up everywhere!

Also, no matter how many times I un/re-install ZoneAlarm it still says "System Error: Please Reboot"
Any ideas?

Questions - What do you recommend for future protection?
For a FireWall, is ZoneAlarm Free enough?
Should I have an always-running anti-virus and if so, which?
How about an always-running anti-spyware - I've heard good things about Microsoft's "new" beta anti-
spyware?

See the new HijackThis log below…

Thanks!
- Dan

Please download System Security Suite. Extract it from the zip file into a folder.
here.

Run 3S under “Items To Clear” tab place a checkmark in all of them but the last.

Reboot and Rescan with HJT and post a new log here.
Also please describe how your computer behaves now.
Larry -
(I saw you listed on the Security-Central site)

I downloaded and ran 3S, and it seemed to do take about 30 seconds to process what it needed to.

The problem now is that after the reboot, the PC doesn't recognize a network connection anymore!
Or more accurately, nothing can connect to the internet.
Running "ipconfig" returns only the words "Windows IP Configuration" with no network info.
Any ideas?

I had seen in the past that this could happen if HijackThis or other spyware removers are used improperly.
Is that what I did here?

Here is the latest HJT log (after the reboot).

Thanks for your continued help.
(BTW, sorry for taking days between my replies - I can't access the PC every day.)

Things are pretty good now. (Sorry as usual for the slowness… busy and all.) Zone Alarm is still hosed, so I'll have to find a new firewall (probably commercial). Hopefully no more problems will surface from the infection. Thanks for all your help, - Dan

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
