I've used SpyBot, AdAware, and the Microsoft anti-spyware program, but I can't get rid of stupid IE popups that occur when I'm using Mozilla. I ran HJT - here's my logfile:

strommen,

Welcome to the Tom Coyote forum, sorry about the delay but we are all swamped here. You have some infections going on that need to be cleaned.

DO THIS FIRST
Your HIJACKTHIS program is current, but it is very important that it resides in its own folder.
We will use Hijackthis (HJT) to make changes to your system and HJT will make backups of those changes,
If HJT is not in its own folder, those backups could be lost.

Easy to fix,
* just go to MY COMPUTER > YOUR C:\ DRIVE and create a new folder and name it HIJACKTHIS .
* Now scroll to where you have HJT currently, right click on the HJT icon and select CUT .
* Now open the new folder you just created and right click within that folder and select PASTE .
* Now HJT should reside in C:\HIJACKTHIS\HIJACKTHIS.EXE

Post a new HJT log as your system may have changed since your last post.

Ken :D
Thanks Ken. I followed your directions; here's my new log:

strommen,

You have some nasties installed on your system, one of them is responsible for installing the Vundo Trojan, but I dont see any evidence of that trojan, but we will get rid of all the offending entries and files and see what turns up.

You may want to print this out since we have to disconnect from the internet for part of the fix.

Download and Install CCleaner But dont run it yet.

Download and install the 30 day trial of Ewido security suite.
Ewido Security Suite
* Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop for it to double-click.
o Click on update
o You should see Update Complete when done.
o Now close out the program Dont run the scan yet.

Enable Windows to Show All Files and Folders

* Click on MY COMPUTER
* Then on your C: Drive
* Then to TOOLS/ FOLDER OPTIONS/ VIEW
* Choose the radio button to SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS
* Take the checkmark out of HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES
* Then APPLY/ OK

* Don't forget to reverse this once your computer is clean

Reboot your computer into Safemode

* Go to START/ SHUT OF YOUR COMPUTER/ RESTART
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu.
* Use the UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the ENTER KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD

o Now open up Ewido
* Click on scanner
* Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
* You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
* Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
* Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
* Click Save report.
* Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
* Close Ewido Security Suite.

Now while in Safemode, open HJT Scan Only, close all windows ( the only window you should have open is HJT )
Put a checkmark in the following entries and click on Fix Checked

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0AD937E7-2F37-4873-A05E-548A67EF1D0E} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: SDWin32 Class - {0BE87E0F-937E-4D01-9C08-D01F3C0E5AB3} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\fhgsg.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [DI2] "C:\DOCUME~1\STEPHA~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\27.exe\27.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BPT] "C:\Program Files\Bpt\bpt.exe"
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} - http://software-dl.real.com/24a99543d98bb0…ip/RdxIE601.cab

Still in Safemode, look for and delete the following files and folders in Red

C:\WINDOWS\System32\fhgsg.dll
C:\Program Files\Bpt

Reboot normally and run CCleaner

* Click on Run Cleaner
* Run the Issues Scan < When it asks you to backup the Registry..Say Yes

Post the report from Ewido and a new HJT log please.

Ken :D
So, I finally got around to doing all this stuff. I followed your directions, but when I ran HJT, none of the 5 entries you said to delete were even there. Also, the files that you said to delete after running HJT (fghsg.dll and Bpt) were not there either. I'm still getting popups. Here is the HJT log:

Thanks for all your help with this!
strommen, I am not looking at anything bad on your log , it looks like Ewido may have gotten rid of those entries. What type of pop ups are you still gettng? If they are an occasional pop up from when you enter lets say msnbc.com or sites like that are normal , you are runnning the latest version of IE and it does include a pop up blocker, you may have to enable it. Or are there a ton of pop ups leading you to porn sites or places like that. Let me know where they are directing you to, it would give me clue what to look for. You have Spysweeper on your system, open the program, check for updates and run the scan, post the log and it may show me if there is somethng hidden on your system that is not showing up on your log. Ken :D
Ken - the popups are definitely not normal. I run Firefox, but the popups are coming up in IE windows. I get them from doing almost anything, like searching for stuff on Google. They're not pornish or anything, they're typically "Protect Your System From Spyware" or "Error Detected", stuff like that.

I don't have a subscription to SpySweeper, but I can list a few of the things it found, with its associated severity rating:

5 bars:
180search assistant/zango
2nd-thought
adlogix
directrevenue-abetterinternet

4 bars:
apropos
broadcast-pc

3 bars:
alwaysupdatednews
bookedspace
dealhelper
flashtrack
my daily horoscope
search3 toolbar
shopathomeselect

There are also a bunch of cookies, listed with 1 bar. Just in case, I ran HJT again. Here's the log:

Thanks for all your help - I hope you can figure this out!
strommen,

apropos <– this was in your Spysweeper report and may be the cause of your popups. It is a Rootkit and what it does is loads before the Operatng System loads and goes undected. Lets run the fix for it and see if it cleans it off your system.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix © Swandog46 from here:
Aproposfix

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop.
Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log,
along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

Ken :D
Ken - I ran the apropos fix. I think it worked! I searched for about 5 things on Google to test if I would get any popups, and I didn't. Just in case though, I'll post my logs; maybe there's still something there that is objectionable. Here they are:

Let me point out a few things for you.

Ewido Anti-Malware
This is a 30 day evaluation but it will still work after 30 days, you can check for updates and run the scans, the only thing you will lose is the background guard.

SpySweeper
This is the only silver bullet for killing malware that we know of, but if you are not planning on purchasing it, remove it from the Add-Remove programs in the Control Panel as it does use a lot of system resouces.

Anti-Virus
I see none listed on your HJT log you need to install only one program. I am including a list of tips and free programs to help keep you secure, in the list I have down two free anti virus programs , pick one and install it unless you have plans for installing another program.

Here are some free programs and tips for keeping your system up to date, and to help keep all the riff raff out of your system.

* Download and Install CCleaner, Click on RUN TOOL, when you run the Issues Scan and it asks
you to back up the registry Say Yes.

Now that your clean, we need to erase all possible older infected files that may still be lurking on your system.

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Prefetch and remove all the contents of the Prefetch Folder.
But not the Prefetch folder itself.

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
* When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now Empty your Recycle Bin

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your
system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* ClickProperties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember

* Make sure that your ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE is up to date and run a full scan at least once aweek.

* Here are Free Anti-Virus Programs if you need one

AVG Free Edition
AntVir Personal Edition

* Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.

* Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

* Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and
give you the option to deny the change.

* IE- Spyad IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains
in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed,
although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

* Firefox Browser
It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use
them both. When it asks you if you want it to be your default browser, say NO and take the checkmark out of the box to ask you again. After you use this
for awhile, you will want to make it your default.

* Thunderbird Mail There companion mail program was highly favored in PCWorld Magazine,
this has a good spam filter and is more secure than Outlook Express.

* Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't
access the internet without it.

* WINDOWS UPDATES - Enable Automatic Updates
Right click on MY COMPUTER/Click on PROPERTIES/ AUTOMATIC UPDATES and put a mark in the radio button
DOWNLOAD UPDATES FOR ME BUT LET ME CHOOSE WHEN TO INSTALL THEM.

* Go to START/ CONTROL PANEL> PERFORMANCE AND MAINTENANCE> REARRANGE ITEMS ON YOUR HARD DISK TO MAKE PROGRAMS RUN FASTER
This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to keep your system running good. The first time you run it, it may take awhile.
