Hi,

Recently the Windows Messenger icon reappeared in the notification area, after I'd disabled it a year ago and had nothing to do with it since. I closed it, killed the process (MSMSG.EXE) in Task Manager, and then read at liutilities.com that it could be a likely indication of a Backdoor.Prorat trojan. I ran McAfee Virus Scan 9 (updated), Spybot S&D, Kasperky Lab's online virus scanner, and SpyAudit. All came up clean except SpyAudit, which detected a few cookies.

Then I ran Trend Micro's Housecall65 through Firefox, which detected CWS_SE.50000. I selected auto clean, which said it had to delete some items, and then indicated that others needed to be removed manually. At this point it hung for a while as I waited for a java window to open - it didn't, so I closed out (the whole scan was sluggish - I ran it again through IE and after scanning it jumped right to the message that items needed to be removed manually; again, it hung while I waited for elaboration, and I closed it again).

I downloaded and ran Trend Micro's CWShredder, which showed no infections.

This morning I rebooted in Safe Mode (from the System Configuration Utility) and ran CWShredder, which found and removed CWS.Msconfig. I ran the other stuff (McAfee, Spybot, and Microsoft Antispy - all updated in Safe Mode) which all showed clean. I downloaed AdAware Personal (ran it - clean) and HijackThis to get an expert opinion, and here I am. I hope you can tell me the system looks clean. It's my parents' computer, and they are overdue for an upgrade to SP2. I want to make sure everything's good before I take that on.

p.s. I removed eFax Messenger 4.1 today, which my brother had installed over vacation. I wondered if malware could've piggybacked on that.

Here's the log. The system actually doesn't seem too sluggish, and there have been no homepage hijacks I'm aware of. I just want someone to check and see if all is as it should be - CWS-free. Please let me know if any more info is required. Thanks.

p.p.s. I removed PartyPoker about six months ago, so I'm not sure about those two items below.

48 Hour bump In addition, I reran CWShredder in Safe Mode yesterday morning and CWS.Msconfig had returned. I've looked at quite a few solutions offered in other threads but want to wait until someone can help me with my specific log; otherwise I'd probably end up doing either way too much or way too little. Thanks for any help.
Download System Security Suite v1.04 here

After showing hidden files I couldn't find C:\Program Files\PartyPoker. I think it may have been in the Recycle Bin when I made the first HJT scan, and so I would've emptied that earlier this week.

Two things:

1. I rebooted after Fixing the two items with HJT; at the user sign on screen the password area dissappeared while I was midway through entering the PW. I clicked around a little and it soon reappeared, and then I was able to type it in with no problem. (Often the keyboard quits working while entering the password, and I have to reclick in the PW field to get it working again - but this was the first time the whole field disappeared).

2. I rebooted after using 3S as instructed. McAfee Privacy Service announced that its database was missing or corrupt. First time that's happened. I closed and reopened it and was able to enter its password . According to the McAfee Security Center it's enabled.

Other than that the computer seems to be running ok. Firefox is the primary browser, and I've never noticed any hijack of IE's homepage. What's the nature of those two CWS infections? Not having noticed them makes them seem more insidious than the typical in-your-face hijacker. I couldn't find much of anything about CWS_SE.50000 on Google.

Two questions:

1. Should I rerun the Housecall scan and the CWShredder in Safe Mode which first detected the CWS infections?
2. Any thoughts on the sudden appearance of Windows Messenger in the System Tray from the OP?

I'll shut-up now ;) Thanks for the help!
Not sure but CWS might have tried to hijack you and tea timer may have stoped it.

Then it may have been stuck in a temp file trying to reinstall. Log looks clean

Think is is time to install SP2 and the other updates.
http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/…t.aspx?ln=en-us
Cool. Thanks again. I just ran CWShredder in Safe Mode and it showed no infection. I wanted to run a Housecall scan again, but it was really at a slow crawl, and then Firefox just shut down. I won't worry about that for now. I'll tackle the SP2 upgrade.
