Hi all,
I just did a hijackthis scan and I have no idea what I am doing so I would appreciate if someone could tell me what should be deleted so that I don't delete anything necessary. Thanks.

Hello and welcome to TomCoyote forum. Let me first say that you have a real mess here and it is going to take time and work to clean it up. If you are ready to do that and to follow directions, I will try to help you, let's start like this:

1) You are running HJT.exe from a .zip file in a Temporary Directory. This is unsafe as we will have no backups. That is why you received this message when you used HJT: http://russelltexas.com/malware/images/unsafefolder.gif
Please use the information in the following link to place HJT in a permanent, safe folder, I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe. If you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm
Do this before you proceed.

2) Start > Controll Panel > Add Remove Programs and uninstall:

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\ <<< unless you know it and use it, see this:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/newsletter/arch…4.php#viewpoint

C:\Program Files\BearShare\ <<< unless you are positive it is safe, see this:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/ If you did not pay for it, it needs to go.

C:\Program Files\Hotbar\

3) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

4) Microsoft AntiSpyware will block the HJT fix, stay off line while you have it disabled:
Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck: Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck: Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.

5) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log this same thread along with your comments. How is the computer running now? We will have more to do.

Thanks…pskelley

Thank you for your help so far! The computer seems to be running a little bit faster and I have yet to see any popups but I have not been on the internet much since I followed your steps. Also it has not randomly restarted (with the message "Your System has recovered from a serious error" upon loading) but again I have not spent much time on it to make sure. I will let you know if this occurs again. Also, part of your instructions included disabling microsoft antispyware for a bit and while attempting to do that I realized that this computer no longer has a subscription to that so I am guessing I should order that? Please let me know further steps that need to be taken.

Here is my new HJT logfile…

Microsoft AntiSpyware is free, I do understand they are going to release something called Defender (I think) I do not use it and will suggest other free programs for you to consider once you are clean, but MAS is a good free program as far as I am aware.

You know how to use HJT now, I will be candid and tell you what I would do if this was my computer

C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe <<< file only
See this: http://castlecops.com/startuplist-1436.html I would delete the file I highlite in red.

Remove

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://rd.yahoo.com/customize/sbcydsl/defa…//www.yahoo.com
The first line was on the last removal list. You may have to remove it with HJT in safe mode: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial61.html

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE see this: http://castlecops.com/startuplist-180.html I would remove only the file I highlite in red. Careful of the spelling.

O4 - Global Startup: Updates from HP.lnk = C:\Program Files\Updates from HP\137903\Program\BackWeb-137903.exe << if you remove the file above, then use HJT to remove this line.

O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exe

I would not allow this junk on my computer, you are looking for trouble.

Use the instructions in the following link to clean out the System Restore Files in case any bad stuff got backed up in them:
