An XP SP2 laptop, profoundly infested with spy/malware; popups at light-speed.
AdAware, SpyBot no real help; ditto MS-AntiSpyware. Finally, SpySweeper.
Killed 'em all AFAIK but may have killed the goose too.
Laptop owner is a student at a small college (Disneyland for spyware?).
Uses college web-site as IE home page.
After clean-up, no response from college web-site to IE.
IE just times out with "The page cannot be displayed".
NETCAP on laptop shows successful DNS query (good result);
Then, 1 HTTP (Normal Service), followed 3 seconds later by another, followed 6 seconds by another.
IE then gives up. There are no responses from the target site.
One thing that struck me as queer was that the SYN bit was on in the TCP Flags of all three frames.
Seemed odd to me but I'm not well-informed enough to judge on this.

As a workaround, I tried to restore from checkpoints. None would restore.

Laptop SEEMS clean but still that nasty little problem with the home-page. And of course, the blown
checkpoints.

Ran HIJAKTHIS (log follows).
Any help gratefully received.

:( Sorry but I'm always forgetting something. Ran SFC early on but no comment from command. Installed FireFox but same problem. PING homepage-url resolves nicely and responds normally. Other PCs on same network open the homepage normally. I hope/think that's everything now. ASelene

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune....oads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads....org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so! This Fix must NOT be run in safe mode for it to work.

if you receive, while running option #1, an error similar like: ''C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe
C:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows applications. choose close to terminate the application.."...then please use option 5 or the web page link in the l2mfix folder to solve this error condition. do not run the fix portion without fixing this first.

Siggyx,

I've done what you suggested and pasted the report at the end. However, prior to seeing your post, I had removed a few of the more obvious miscreants with HIJACKTHIS after consulting a different site. I'd about given up on a response here and time is of the essence. (Sorry about that) One vestige of the SpySweeper removals is the key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\Notify\WRNotifier]
"Asynchronous"=dword:00000000
"DllName"="WRLogonNTF.dll"
..etc..

That DLL no-longer exists. I was just about to clean this key out with HIJACKTHIS.

I've been testing performance and the only thing that APPEARS to be affected is HTML. It doesn't matter whether it's IE or FireFox. Some web-sites simply ignore the initial connection frame from the laptop. I can't lay hands on my firewalling "cookbook" right now but as I remember, an unsolicited inbound with the TCP Flag SYN set is a likely "spoof" probe and should be dropped. This describes exactly the behavior I'm seeing.
However, many/most commercial sites aren't bothered by such frames.

Where I'm headed with on this is that it seems to be a TCP/IP or WINSOCK or HTML problem on the system that was undoubtedly spawned by some malware that was removed.

Bottom line is that student can't connect to her home page.

I'll post an updated HIJACKTHIS report if you like.

Thanks,
AS

I've taken a really clean XP Pro desktop and run some Net captures on it to see about the traffic with the problem site. The Problem LAPTOP is trying to open a session using a Port # of 1146 and its Window Size is 64240 which is 1295 bytes under maximum. The Successful DESKTOP opens a session using Port # 1091 and its Window Size is 65535 (the max). Otherwise, the two packets look essentially alike to me. I think that the college has a firewall that either rejects the packets trying to open a session on port 1146 or because of the non-standard window. I'm guessing it's more than likely the port. Problem: What evil thing did this and how to fix? Is it in Winsock, TCP/IP or HTTP? Thx -AS

Lets finish the fix and do soem cleaning and see what that leaves us.

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter. It will process then start. Your desktop and icons will disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, it will be ready for a reboot. Press any key to reboot. After the reboot notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder unless you are asked to do so! Do Not run in safe mode!!
If after the reboot the log does not open double click on it in the l2mfix folder.

If you have not tried restoring the hosts files try this.

Please download hoster from the link below.

http://www.funkytoad...load/hoster.zip

Open Hoster.exe.

Then click on "Restore Original Hosts"

Close program when complete.

I have alos pm'ed another classroom teacher a this problem sounds familiar but I do not have the reg fix on file, hopefully it is the correct one I get.

Color them gone.
The HOSTS file was already OK. I had already manually
reduced it to MS's comments plus a 127.0.0.1 LOCALHOST line.
I'm happy with it.

Next step? Ready to test IE?

I'm just getting "The page cannot be displayed".

I think it's likely a firewall kind of issue at the destination.
The thing just doesn't like the session opening packet formed by
this laptop. It likes standard WinXP SP2 packets just fine, even
from the same network. Also, it likes Win2KProSP4 packets just
fine.

I'm suspicious that there's some skulduggery going on with that
sub-maximal TCP window. Might that somehow allow a trojan to
piggy-back stuff in ordinary packets? I dunno. It's over my head.

Also, the port it uses to open a session is different than the one
that "standard" windows uses. I yield to experts on this one.

I suspect that there was an evil LSP that was grabbing these
packets, doing things with 'em, then passing 'em on after some
cosmetic fixups. That LSP is gone now.

I can prove none of this though.

I ran ccleaner but held off on regseeker. I'm not sure this uses is
able to make the right decisions about regseeker - maybe not even
ccleaner but I ran it anyway.

Standing by...

Hello aselene,

Please try this:

Get a copy of winsockxpfix.exe You just run it and
things should work OK after it reboots your system.

Hi LDTate,

None of the hives backed up successfully. Nor did the users.
All we have is the ER... programs and overlays.

I didn't want to take it any further.

Perhaps I needed to reboot before doing this? Perhaps
see if RegEdit will open the registry successfully?
