Hi,

Would really appreciate some help here! After some research on the net I worked out that I'm infected with msconfigre.exe - I repeatedly get the same three viruses when I connect to the net and a tab opens with adultfriendfinder website in it. In order to get to the forums here I had to use Hijackthis to disable it - before I did that it refused to load the tomcoyote.org pages, and stopped me from updating my AVG Anit-virus software with the latest virus definitions. I've saved Hijack This to it's own folder so it's made back-ups of the changes I made when I terminated msconfigre.exe. Otherwise I've done nothing to the system - I know I'm not supposed to fiddle with it.

Here's my Hijack this log as I presume I have some other nasties left. Appreciate any help you can give me.

Hello masqueradeuk, Welcome to the forum.

This is what I suggest you do.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.4 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.06 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

1. Launch Ad-Aware SE and run the WebUpdate feature. (Click on the Globe icon > Click connect > Click OK > Click Finish.)
2. Set up the Configurations as follows:
-- Click the Gear wheel at the top of the Ad-Aware window
-- Click General > Safety & Settings: Check (Green) all three.
-- Click Tweak > Cleaning Engine > UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion".
3. Click "Proceed"
4. Click "Scan Now"
5. Deselect "Search for negligible risk entries" as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
6. Select "Search for low-risk threats"
7. Run the scanner using the Full Scan (Perform full system scan) mode.
8. When the scan has completed, select Next.
9. In the Scanning Results window, select the "Scan Summary" tab.
10. Check the box next to each "target family" you wish to remove.
11. Click next > Click OK.

Next:

Please download the trial version of ewido anti-malware 3.5 here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then please run Ewido, click on the Scanner run a full scan and let it clean everything it finds. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

Okay. I'm working through your list of instructions but I only have dial-up at home so it may not be until tomorrow before I can come back with the new logs. Thanks for the help so far! Will keep you posted.

You have a very nasty infection. If this were my PC I'd consider reformating it and starting over. We can try and remove the infection, but you'll need to change any passwords afterwards. Also I can't promise we'll be able to completely remove it.

Do you use the PC for any financial business like banking?

This section helps you to understand how it behaves
W32/Rbot-ABZ is a worm which attempts to spread to remote network shares. It also contains backdoor functionality, allowing unauthorised remote access to the infected computer via IRC channels while running in the background as a service process.

W32/Rbot-ABZ copies itself to the Windows System32 folder as wkfix.exe and creates entries in the registry to run itself on system startup.

If you want to try and clean it let me know.

Oh great! I'd like to try and fix it if possible. Is there any way to tell how long I've had it? I don't use my use my laptop for any financial things - although I have checked my bank account from here before - so I'll ask the bank to change and re-set my access passwords.

Also, laptop seems to be running better but I'm still getting really irritating pop-ups telling me I have an infected registry and to go to their website and download some software to fix it - several different websites in fact. They're not browser pop-ups - they come up like dialog boxes in the task bar and I have to click the "ok" button to get them to go away. I seem to be able to open the Task Manager and My Documents etc, while I'm connected to the net now which I wasn't always able to do before.

Go here and run this scan. Let me know what it finds.
Microsoft - Malicious Software Removal Tool
http://www.microsoft...ve/default.mspx

Download this one and let me know if it finds anything.
RootkitRevealer
http://www.sysintern...itRevealer.html

When it's done, go to file->save
save the logfile to the desktop, and then past the contents here.

The Microsofy Malicious Software Removal Tool found no infections. The Rootkit Revealer found no inconsistencies. Ewido has just popped up an alert saying its found a backdoor robot msoftconf.exe. Is that the same on back again? I asked it to clean the file.

Lets see if this one finds it.

Download and Save blacklight to your desktop.
F-Secure Blacklight: http://www.f-secure....light/try.shtml
Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement.
click > scan then > next,
You'll see a list of all items found.
Don't choose for rename yet! I want to see the log first, because legit items can also be present there...
There must be also a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers)
Post the contents of the log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.
