Latest HighjackThis Scan Log attached below.

My Machine has become very slow on line now, having difficulty sending posts etc even accessing TomCoyote, I use a dial up connection as Broadband is not available in my area. I have had to shut down all virus & Spyware protection so I can send this post.
Popups have not occured while writing this post
Why did we delete my MS Office Shortcut bar, is it possible to reinstall as I use this all the time?

After some difficulty I accessed the Microsoft site as you suggested, found that I already have Service Pack1A so other than Service pack 2. So I think I may be fairly well up to date. (I didnt download SP2)

Why did we delete my MS Office Shortcut bar, is it possible to reinstall as I use this all the time?

You can open the HijackThis folder and in the Backup folder you can re-install it.


lets see if this will help speed it up.

Backup your Registry...
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run...)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL



I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

Have restored the Office shortcut bar - many thanks

I Ran RegSeeker as I installed it previously and it cleaned up approx 100 files, my machine is now running much faster again. Why would this occur in such a short time since I last ran REgSeeker? The only online taskes carried out have been posting to you and getting my emails.

I am still getting those annoying messenger service popups - I experienced 7 while writing this post
I think they are coming from within the machine as the google bar is telling me it is blocking popups from outside. Do you think we can eliminate them?

I would think that is because we've been removing items with our fixes.


I suggest you do this:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Empty Recycle Bin.

Restart your computer.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

My machine seems to be performing faster than previously described, the Messenger Service popups are still occuring ,only 5 occured while writing this post, it seems that the longer I am on line the more frequent the messenger service popups are.

I have left this file in at this stage as my daughter uses this program.

Lets look at what's in the startup. click Start> Run> type in Msconfig tap enter key. look in the Startup. Uncheck C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe After you uncheck it and rebooting, you'll be using Selective startup. When you see the box popup that tells you that, just put a Check in the Box to not show that when you startup. That's how I run mine. Reboot and see if the messages are gone.

Still getting the messenger service popups when on line. 7 occurred while writing this post, another symptom of my machine is that after being on line for around 15-20 minutes Outlook Express locks up forcing me to reboot?

LDTate, I have disabled the Messenger service in XP and have not had any popups since. I have had trouble with Outlook Express locking up several times today (needing a reboot to unfreeze) Do you think this may have been part of my problems or just a coincedence? The version I use, you can open the ICON on your taskbar and open Programs. Click the box next to the program you want to to change and it should change each time you click the box. My options are a Check Mark, ? Mark or X. Check Mark means to accept the site / program. You can also open the Help At the top and look for answers there.

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start> My Computer, select the Tools menu and then Folder Options, after the new window appears select the View tab…]
This time select the: Restore Defaults
Select: Apply, and click OK




If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.
