Hello All. I hope that this is the correct place to start a new topic. My apologies if this goes anywhere else. Spyware is blocking access to the link to new postings.

I am in dire straights at this point and am thankful that there are places like this to go and get help. I know enough about computers to be dangerous.

I have run Ad-Aware v 1.06 r1, Norton Antivirus 2006 and Spybot (all in both regular and safe mode) and nothing is cleaning up my computer.

I am getting the following:
MHTMLRedir.exploit (detected by Norton Antivirus)
SmitFraud.G (detected by Spybot)
Spyaxe v3.0
PSGuard
Also have the annoying taskbar pop up that is telling me that my CPU is infected and then links to a malicious website.

Here is my post... I would very much appreciate some help here.

Hello and welcome to TomCoyote forum. If you still need help and are not receiving it elsewhere, please follow these directions exactly if you wish to be successful. Thanks to noahdfear and any others who helped with this fix.

1) Move HJT from the Desktop for safety. I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe, if you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas....tehjtfolder.htm

2) Download smitRem.exe©noahdfear and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items and click FIX CHECKED:

Close HiJackThis.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.
- Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
- A new window will open...click the Check Now button
- Enter your Country
- Enter your State/Province
- Enter your e-mail address and click send
- Select either Home User or Company
- Click the big Scan Now button
- If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
- It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
- When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
- When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.
Post the contents of the Panda scan report, along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of smitfiles.txt and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Thanks...pskelley

Hi pskelley... I had big time troubles logging back into the system to post the reports you asked for. I have posted them below for your inspection.

A couple of things to mention:
1. I actually manually removed spyaxe before I received your reply so that was gone.
2. I followed your instructions to the letter (as best I could since Spyaxe was already removed).
3. I can't seem to get rid of the virus called MHTMLRedir.exploit (even though Norton says that it got it)
4. My computer seems to be running very slow.

Here are the reports... thanks in advance for your assistance. Also thanks to daveai for helping me find a way to get back in here today.

Hi Keith, Glad daveai was able to get you logged in, and I hope you have no future problems with that. Was he able to give you any idea of why it happened? Since all that I have been able to do so far is give you the Smitfraud fix, I will reply to your feedback. If I do not say anything, it means there is no reason for a comment. If I miss something, ask it again, thanks.

3. I can't seem to get rid of the virus called MHTMLRedir.exploit (even though Norton says that it got it)

First, this is a new one on me, but we will handle it, I am posting some links so you will know what we are up against. You need to review this information carefully, especially when it says "Microsoft has released patch MS04-013 to address this issue" If you do not have this critical update you need to install it right away along with any critical updates for your system that are missing.
http://www.microsoft...n/ms04-013.mspx
http://securityrespo...ir.exploit.html

Removal Instructions:
Because this is an exploit only, there are no removal instructions, since there is nothing to remove. This is a detection for the exploit, preventing the execution of malicious content on your computer. By detecting the exploit, it is prevented from running.
Posting the Google for you to view, you will probably get no better information than in the first link:
http://www.google.co.....Redir.exploit

While I am not sure, It is also possible the fact Java is outdated on your computer, and this is a security risk, that may have contributed to this happening.
I am going to suggest you follow the reconnendations in the Symantec instructions.

4. My computer seems to be running very slow.

You are running Norton which is a resource user and we have added ewido security suite which will slow you down also. Once we are finished with ewido, unless you purchase it, stop it from running. You can use the scanner with free updates for as long as you like but start the program manually if you keep it on your computer. There may be others things I will see in the logs, and I have ideas that might help that do not pertain to malware which is what I am after, that I will share with you.

CLEAN! can't get better than that.

ewido anti-malware - Scan report Created on: 3:58:52 PM, 12/18/2005
Cleaned everything it located, see this: Trojan.Java.ClassLoader.f : Cleaned with backup
This is also showing in the ActiveScan which no longer removes stuff free but is a good tool for finding it. I will provide a few more online scanners or you can use the Panda Report: Incident Status Location
to delete the junk, which may be as a result of the out of date Java, I just do not know enough about the program to be sure. Here are few good free scans:

C:\Program Files\ewido anti-malware\ewidoctrl.exe
C:\Program Files\ewido anti-malware\ewidoguard.exe
We may be using this again, just don't forget it using many resources so you can take action when the free trial is over.

C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_06\bin\jusched.exe Mentioned this before. Start, Control Panel > Java. Update it and set it to auto updates if no one is going to do it manually.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdReg] C:\WINDOWS\UpdReg.EXE see the link, doubt you need this running.
http://castlecops.co...plist-4034.html

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [diagent] "C:\Program Files\Creative\SBLive\Diagnostics\diagent.exe" startup
http://castlecops.co...uplist-908.html <<< your call

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_06\bin\jusched.exe
http://castlecops.co...plist-3552.html running but not doing the job, might not be set right??

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [kdx] C:\WINDOWS\kdx\KHost.exe
http://castlecops.co...plist-1758.html for your infomation, I am not familiar with this but it is running each time you boot and CastleCops says it does not need to be, your call.

Besides the issues with the exploit that you are aware of now, I see no malware in this log, here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://boards.cexx.o...topic.php?t=957
http://russelltexas....re/allclear.htm
http://forum.malware...wtopic.php?t=14
http://www.bleepingc...topict2520.html

You ran Ad-ware, here are instructions for configuring and running it and Spybot for the best results.
http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php

A good cleaning may help, you can try this one with these instruction if you don't have one onboard:
http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp un CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Here is some information that may help you speed up:
