Got a Spy Axe infection a couple of days ago, did a lot of homework and learned quite a bit in getting rid of it, at least I think I got rid of it. Problem is I am still getting requests to install components for certain programs such as Word and Excel when I start them up which makes me think there may still be an issue. Here is the HJT log:

Hello and welcome to TomCoyote forum. I do not see any Smitfraud trojan or SpyAxe evidence, but you do have some ActiveX stuff that should not be there. I would normally run scans to clean and look for stuff HJT can not see. I will remove what I see and you can tell me then if we need to look more.

Move HJT from the Desktop for safety. I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe, if you need additional instructions use these: http://russelltexas....tehjtfolder.htm

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O16 - DPF: {1954A4B1-9627-4CF2-A041-58AA2045CB35} (Brix6ie Control) - http://a19.g.akamai..../v6/brix6ie.cab
O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://207.188.7.150...ip/RdxIE601.cab
O16 - DPF: {C6B086D2-146B-47A4-A218-B82DCAF2D872} (cpbrxpie Control) - http://ftp.coupons.c...20/cpbrxpie.cab
O16 - DPF: {E389B374-BB5A-4A73-ACF4-3CE63E4C1DE9} (Brxpdf5 Control) - http://a19.g.akamai....com/brxpdf5.cab

The above four are nasty, you may check and remove any 016 DPF that you no longer use or do not know what is. Just make sure the ones above go.
Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

Enable hidden files&folders..reverse the process when finished.
http://www.xtra.co.n...1916458,00.html

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Locate and delete these items:

C:\Windows\Prefetch\ >>> delete everything in this folder (NOT THE FOLDER)
Prefetch info: http://www.windowsne...refetch-XP.html

Click on Start > Run then type "cleanmgr" without the quotes and OK. Allow windows to remove anything it locates. Restart the computer and post a new HJT log along with your comments.

Thanks...pskelley

No SpyAxe whoo hoo! That is very good news! There were times when I wasn't sure that I was ever going to see the end of that mess. I am still getting messages on start up trying to reload and configure Norton and Word but I am figuring I will just have to reload those programs. I have followed your instructions and below is the HJT log, thanks for taking the time to help!

I understand how you feel, a large % of logs are about Smitfraud and SpyAxe. Your log looks fine now but we did only clean what was obvious. If you want me to post programs so you can check to make sure nothing is hiding, let me know and I would be glad to. If you feel the computer is running right then I will wish you safe surfing and give you this information, here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

This item: O3 - Toolbar: Norton AntiVirus - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll (file missing) <<< is not working correctly with that missing file. I would download it again if you wish to use it, if not use HJT to remove it.

Thanks...pskelley

I kind of figured that there was an issue with Norton. I ran a couple of logs from Active Scan and Ewido, they popped up a couple of things. For the Active Scan results I do have a concern with the searchcentrix spyware since Active Scan did not clean that out or give me an idea of what to delete from the registry. The second entry is a SpyAxe file that I eliminated using killbox, once I deleted that file the popups messages stopped and SpyAxe did not regenerate itself for the first time. The ioctrl.dll file I deleted was found by Active Scan from a previous scan as a SpyAxe file. Active Scan: Incident Status Location Spyware:spyware/searchcentrix Not disinfected Windows Registry Adware:Adware/SpyAxe Not disinfected C:\!KillBox\ioctrl.dll Virus:Exploit/iFrame Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music\Sample Music\login.nws Virus:Exploit/iFrame Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music\Sample Music\login.nws[~0000002.~] Virus:Exploit/iFrame Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music\sample.eml Virus:Exploit/iFrame Not disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My Music\sample.eml[~0000002.~] Ewido Scan: C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\owner@ads.pointroll[1].txt -> Spyware.Cookie.Pointroll : Cleaned with backup C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\owner@advertising[1].txt -> Spyware.Cookie.Advertising : Cleaned with backup C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\owner@cnn.122.2o7[1].txt -> Spyware.Cookie.2o7 : Cleaned with backup C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\owner@edge.ru4[1].txt -> Spyware.Cookie.Ru4 : Cleaned with backup C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\owner@mediaplex[1].txt -> Spyware.Cookie.Mediaplex : Cleaned with backup C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\owner@msnportal.112.2o7[1].txt -> Spyware.Cookie.2o7 : Cleaned with backup C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\owner@z1.adserver[1].txt -> Spyware.Cookie.Adserver : Cleaned with backup

I need to say that it seems Panda is no longer removing stuff free. It is still a good tool for locating junk that is hiding for manual removal. Ewido is one of the tools I use for routine cleaning, I run it after Spybot & Adaware then finish up with a good cleaner like CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp If you should use it, it is important that you backup the registry when prompted to if you run "Issues" which cleans the registry. Ewido is finding only cookies, that is an excellent sign:
http://www.mvps.org/...002/cookies.htm
http://www.microsoft...acy/config.mspx

It is possible CCleaner will pickup that searchcentrix line in the registry. If is probably not an issue if that is all that is left. You may have to manually remove it or us a registry editor if CCleaner does not remove it.
The rest of that stuff I would just delete manually, may have to be done in safe mode. If you want a check of any of the files before deleting them:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustota...h/index_en.html

You can also make sure your recycle bin has not been bypassed then move them there for a few days to make sure nothing has been effected by the removal. I hope this information helps.

Thanks...Phil

Sorry for the delay, I could not log in under my original screen name even when I tried to reset the password. I kept getting an SQL error message. I will run a CC scan and see if that gets searchcentrix line out. I am glad that you don't think that it is an issue because I got a little spooked when I saw it pop up. Otherwise things seems to be running normally again, I appreciate your time and help!

Here is some information that might help you: http://www.mvps.org/...02/delcache.htm
http://www.dummies.c...,subcat-OS.html

I kept getting an SQL error message.

You always want to post the error message word for word. There a millions of possible messages. The next time you get that message do a Google search for it, copy and paste the exact message and you will get infomation. This is often caused by corrupt or outdated drivers but it is impossible to tell with the limited information:
http://www.google.com/ To show you what I mean, this: SQL error message returns this:
http://www.google.co...G=Google Search (5,900,000 possible responses)

I do not think you have anything to worry about, just in case something bad got in your System Restore, follow these instructions:
http://service1.syma...src=sec_doc_nam

Review the expert advice I posted above, apply what is needed and enjoy your computer. This is good advice: http://www.pcpitstop...ycheck/know.asp

If you wish me to post a link to a good registry cleaner and instructions for using it, let me know. Otherwise I will close this thread.

Thanks...pskelley

A registry cleaner would be great, I searched for searchcentrix in the registry and cannot find it. Otherwise I think I am ok. Thanks again for your help.

You are certainly welcome. While it is on my mind, you should move HJT from the Desktop. While it can run from the folder you have it in, HJT needs it own folder where it can safely store logs and backups. I prefer C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe. These instruction will help if you need them:
http://russelltexas....tehjtfolder.htm

It is important that you follow the directions, never edit anything in the registry without backing it up first. Here is the link and the instructions you need.

http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm

Backup Registry:
Backup your Registry...
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run...)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

________________________________________________________

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder,
open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program.
Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK.
When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked
and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within
the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything
it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly,
control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything).
In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click
any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen.
Reboot When done.

Happy Holidays and safe surfing...Phil :wavey:
