Thanks for sending your information. We are sorry for the delay in responding. The volunteers here are swamped and unfortunately not all logs get answered as quickly as we'd like.

If you still need help with your problem, please run Hijack This again. Scan and copy the log, then post it here, in this topic .

Please use the Post Reply feature, so I will be notified.

Please tell us as much as possible, concerning the problem.

Please do not edit your Hijack This log in any way. We need to see the entire logfile, with no revisions.

Thanks for taking an interest. I think I have too many processes open, but haven't a clue as to what I can safely shut down. Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated. I have a Dell 3.2 proc 1.5 gig memory and it seems to be running far too slowly for what I think should be a grunty machine.
Cheers

Hi Sprocket

Lets begin by fixing some things in your Hijack This logfile. I think you will see a noticable improvement when we have finished.

You may want to Copy and Paste this text into a Notepad file and place it on your desktop, to review as you work. Please read this text thouroughly, before beginning as some things may have been suggested to remove, that you trust and wish to keep. If so, please keep them.

The following "stop service" is OPTIONAL.

WINDOWS XP:

First, go into Safe Mode.
To Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and immediately begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard.
If done right a Windows Advanced Options menu will appear. Select the Safe Mode option and press Enter.

Then,

To stop a service and set to 'disabled'

Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK

Click the Extended tab.

Scroll down until you find the service. FolderSize\FolderSizeSvc.exe

Click once on the service to highlight it.

Click Stop

Right-Click on the service. FolderSize\FolderSizeSvc.exe

Click on 'Properties'

Select the 'General' tab

Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box

From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'

Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'

Next:
Please download CWShredder, from one of the following sites.
http://www.trendmicr.../cwshredder.exe
http://www.majorgeek...dder_d3019.html
http://intermute.com...r_download.html

First, be sure to update CWShredder.
Then close every window, disconnect from Internet and doubleclick the CWShredder icon on your Desktop.
Click Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.
Then, please reboot.

Next:
Close all Windows leaving only HijackThis running.
Place a check against each of the following.:

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = about:blank
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: Need2Find Bar BHO - {4D1C4E81-A32A-416b-BCDB-33B3EF3617D3} - blank (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E711EEC3-5208-3800-00E1-7C2D306FB63C} - blank (file missing)
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://km.bar.need2f...earch.html?p=KM
O16 - DPF: {54823A9D-6BAE-11D5-B519-0050BA2413EB} (ChkDVDCtl Class) - http://www.gocyberli...xp/CheckDVD.cab

The following are OPTIONAL fixes:
If you know and trust the following, the keep them.

O3 - Toolbar: WebFerret - {A58686ED-FC46-44C3-95C6-4A812AB776F1} - C:\Program Files\FerretSoft\WebFerret\FerretBand.dll

The following is a Service and a Program. If you choose to remove it, the service must first be stopped, then the Program removed, in Add/Remove Programs.
O23 - Service: Folder Size (FolderSize) - Brio - C:\Program Files\FolderSize\FolderSizeSvc.exe

Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.

Please boot into SAFE MODE:

Using Windows Explorer, locate the following files/folders shown DARK and delete them:

Please Note: These are both OPTIONAL removals.

C:\Program Files\FerretSoft\WebFerret\FerretBand.dll
C:\Program Files\FolderSize\FolderSizeSvc.exe

Reboot , enable hidden files and post a fresh Hijack This log in this topic.

Please use the Post Reply feature to reply, so I will be notified.

Note: Please do not change anything in the new log, as we need to see the entire log, without revisions.
The help you receive here is free. If you wish to show your appreciation, then you may donate to help keep us online.

Thank you.
Please note that
1.FolderSizeSvc.exe was already disabled when I checked.
2. Hijack Item 08 - Extra context menu item: &Search http://km.bar etc was not present. Instead, the reference is to Excel - see in the log. The rest has gone ahead as instructed, without further incident.

Hi Sprocket

Looking good. The 08 entry was likely fixed by CWShredder, as were the other Cool Web Search entries. The 08 entry present in the log now is a safe MS Office file, which I'm sure was there previously. Your Hijack This logfile looks to be free of Malware. If your PC is operating normally, I'd say we are finished here.

One of the best features of Windows XP is the System Restore option, however if Malware infects a computer with this operating system the Malware can be backed up in the System Restore folder. Therefore, clearing the restore points is necessary after a virus removal.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access. You will know if the account has administrator access because you will be able to see the System Restore tab. If the tab is missing, you are logged in under a limited account.

(winXP)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

Download the new Ad-Aware SE version, and follow the instructions on how to do a full scan: http://forums.spywar...showtopic=11150
-reboot after using Ad-Aware SE. Also while there get the VX2 plugin and follow the instructions to run it also.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
I also suggest that you delete any files from "temp", "tmp" folders. In Internet Explorer, click on "Tools" => "Internet Options" => "Delete Files" and select the box that says "Delete All Offline Content" and click on "OK" twice. Also, empty the recycle bin by right clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". These steps should be done on a regular basis.

And also see TonyKlein's good advice
http://castlecops.co...tlite7736-.html
So how did I get infected in the first place?

Safe surfing. :wavey:

Thank you - the system boots up at least 30 seconds faster and graphics load quicker. Many thanks for your help.
