I found your site when I pasted the message below into Google. I found a dialogue on your site that showed how to fix the problem – and I was getting ready to ask the same question tonight because we are having the same problem on our PC.

"Warning!

However, in the process of writing you, I was doing a Norton AnitVirus scan – and lo and behold, I came up with this message as well:
Virus Alert
Norton AntiVirus has detected a virus on your computer.
Object Name: C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\HP14C8.TMP
Virus Name: Trojan.StartPage
Action Taken: Unable to repair this file.

When I looked further at the report, it said the viruses were as follows:
Hp14C8.tmp Trojan.StartPage “Repair Failed”
Msvol.tlb Hacktool.Rootkit “Repair Failed”
Nvctrl.exe Trojan.StartPage “Repair Failed”

This has all happened within the span of 3 days! I guess we've been lucky with our "SpyBot" and "Norton AntiVirus" programs – and we are REALLY careful about opening unauthorized e-mails – because we have been using our Gateway since 1996 – with one upgrade – and this is the first time we have "caught" a virus – or seen that ugly word "Trojan" on our screen. I've pasted both messages as I'm concerned about how to get rid of it ALL. Can you help? This is the first time I've ever used this type of forum – and I sure hope I'm doing this correctly.
Thanks,
Fixit.
Download hijackthis to its own folder C:/HJT for example. Extrat the zip file to that folder. Then close all browseer windows, open hijackthis and click on scan. Once the scan has completed click on Save Log, this will produce a text file log. Highlight all of the information from in that text box then right click and copy. Come back to this post you made and click on "add reply" at the bottom right and a new window will open. Paste the hijackthis log into the new window hit add reply in that new window.

HJT download >>> http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/10/17/10-17-69.shtml
Thank you so much for the quick response. Here is the text file log from the "hijackthis" scan:

Step # 1

Please download and run CWShredder. Make sure that all browser windows are closed with the exception of Cwshredder and choose FIX.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?…7fd6b3ff02edc90

REBOOT

Step #2

Please download and run Spybot 1.4 & AdAware SE Then follow the instructions in the link below to run.

Spybot & Adaware Tutorial

REBOOT

Step # 3

Then do a virus scan here >>> Trend Micro

Step # 4

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.
Hi. I followed all of your directions and I will paste the log from the Ewido scan below. Before I do that, however, my "Norton Anti-Virus" software popped up when I logged back in under normal startup mode – and said that the virus "Trojan.StartPage" was detected in "C:\WINNT\system32\hp1018.tmp". But Ewido cleaned 33 infected files. So I was wondering why Norton still noted the virus. Also, we wanted to know…our subscription to Norton AntiVirus is notifying us that we need to renew our subsription by Dec. 20th. At this point, we are wondering whether or not it is worth it to do so – if there is better anti-virus software out there? (i.e. Will any of the software I downloaded today – CWShredder, Spybot 1.4, AdAware SE, Trend Micro, or Ewido Security Suite – act as similar, or better, anti-virus software?) Thanks! Log Scan from Ewido follows below: ——————————————————— ewido security suite - Scan report ——————————————————— + Created on: 3:34:09 PM, 12/10/2005 + Report-Checksum: 1790C4F7 + Scan result: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{2B96D5CC-C5B5-49A5-A69D-CC0A30F9028C} -> Spyware.MiniBug : Cleaned with backup HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{724510C3-F3C8-4FB7-879A-D99F29008A2F} -> Hijacker.SpyAxe : Cleaned with backup HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{954814C0-40F3-4249-8528-B4922CD2964E} -> Spyware.HotBar : Cleaned with backup HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{A54814C0-40F3-4249-8528-B4922CD2964E} -> Spyware.HotBar : Cleaned with backup HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objecta\{724510c3-f3c8-4fb7-879a-d99f29008a2f} -> Hijacker.SpyAxe : Cleaned with backup HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{724510c3-f3c8-4fb7-879a-d99f29008a2f} -> Hijacker.SpyAxe : Cleaned with backup HKU\S-1-5-21-162025716-963918322-4271176276-1003\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Ext\Stats\{724510C3-F3C8-4FB7-879A-D99F29008A2F} -> Hijacker.SpyAxe : Cleaned with backup [516] C:\WINNT\system32\ldC41B.tmp -> Downloader.Zlob.ce : Cleaned with backup :mozilla.7:C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\bln77uuq.slt\cookies.txt -> Spyware.Cookie.Centrport : Cleaned with backup :mozilla.8:C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\bln77uuq.slt\cookies.txt -> Spyware.Cookie.Ru4 : Cleaned with backup :mozilla.16:C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\bln77uuq.slt\cookies.txt -> Spyware.Cookie.Ru4 : Cleaned with backup C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\owner@2o7[2].txt -> Spyware.Cookie.2o7 : Cleaned with backup C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\[removed][2].txt -> Spyware.Cookie.Pointroll : Cleaned with backup C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\[removed][1].txt -> Spyware.Cookie.Falkag : Cleaned with backup C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\owner@bluestreak[1].txt -> Spyware.Cookie.Bluestreak : Cleaned with backup C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\owner@burstnet[2].txt -> Spyware.Cookie.Burstnet : Cleaned with backup C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\owner@casalemedia[2].txt -> Spyware.Cookie.Casalemedia : Cleaned with backup C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\owner@questionmarket[1].txt -> Spyware.Cookie.Questionmarket : Cleaned with backup C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\owner@trafic[1].txt -> Spyware.Cookie.Trafic : Cleaned with backup C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Cookies\owner@tribalfusion[2].txt -> Spyware.Cookie.Tribalfusion : Cleaned with backup C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\USE34H0A\mm[1].js -> Spyware.Chitika : Cleaned with backup C:\System Volume Information\_restore{0193FC1C-0A70-478B-8107-B531B8E70CAB}\RP13\A0002278.tlb -> Downloader.Zlob.cf : Cleaned with backup C:\System Volume Information\_restore{0193FC1C-0A70-478B-8107-B531B8E70CAB}\RP14\A0002332.tlb -> Downloader.Zlob.cf : Cleaned with backup C:\System Volume Information\_restore{0193FC1C-0A70-478B-8107-B531B8E70CAB}\RP14\A0002415.tlb -> Downloader.Zlob.cf : Cleaned with backup C:\System Volume Information\_restore{0193FC1C-0A70-478B-8107-B531B8E70CAB}\RP14\A0002445.exe -> Trojan.Puper.bq : Cleaned with backup C:\System Volume Information\_restore{0193FC1C-0A70-478B-8107-B531B8E70CAB}\RP15\A0002487.exe -> Downloader.Zlob.ca : Cleaned with backup C:\System Volume Information\_restore{0193FC1C-0A70-478B-8107-B531B8E70CAB}\RP15\A0002493.tlb -> Downloader.Zlob.cf : Cleaned with backup C:\WINNT\system32\hpC41B.tmp -> Trojan.Puper.bq : Cleaned with backup C:\WINNT\system32\ldC41B.tmp -> Downloader.Zlob.ce : Cleaned with backup C:\WINNT\system32\mscornet.exe -> Downloader.Zlob.cc : Cleaned with backup C:\WINNT\system32\msvol.tlb -> Downloader.Zlob.cf : Cleaned with backup C:\WINNT\system32\nvctrl.exe -> Trojan.Puper.bq : Cleaned with backup D:\WINDOWS\TEMP\msnsetup.exe -> Heuristic.Win32.AVKiller : Cleaned with backup ::Report End

Looks purty good…and no more Norton "You Have a Virus" warnings! You folks are unbelievable. What an incredible service you offer. Your directions were very easy to follow…and THEY WORK! (I think the "Wingman" result that came up with Ewido as a "Suspicious Virus" is from my husband's Flying – "Jane's – software…he says that name comes up with the Joystick plugin for flying the plane.) We both have 2 questions for you before we leave you: 1. Now that we have all these virus/adware detection programs on our computer, should they stay there – and can we set them to detect further viruses? 2. Our Norton comes up for renewal next Tuesday. Is it worth renewing – or can we do just as well with any of the downloads we did during this "Search/Find/Destroy" mission? Thank you so much for all your patience and support. :)

1. Now that we have all these virus/adware detection programs on our computer, should they stay there – and can we set them to detect further viruses?

The main programs you will need are a good anti-virus, a firewall and some ondemand scanners. I recommend keeping Ewido and use it as a on demand trojan scanner, even when your free trial runs out you still get updates and works well. I would also recommend Spybot Search and destroy and Adaware SE as free on demand scanners.

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. In my signature below is also a tutorial on how to harden IE, a good read and very helpful to stop these things in the future.

2. Our Norton comes up for renewal next Tuesday. Is it worth renewing – or can we do just as well with any of the downloads we did during this "Search/Find/Destroy" mission?

Norton is a good product and I will not say anything negative aboaut it. Like all anti virus programs it is important to 1) keep them active 2) update regulary and 3) dont think they are going to stop everything. They are always playing catch up to the people that write this garbage sooo Safe and smart internet surfing is the trick.

Anything else I can help you with?
Thank you so much for all of your help. Yes, there is one "tiny" little thing we want to ask you before saying good-bye. Whenever we turn on our computer – and this only started happening around the same time all that other "stuff" was going on with our computer – the Windows Installer pops up. It says that it's "Preparing to install…" (which takes forever) … and then says, "Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Money 2002." When we click on "Cancel," it then says, "Canceling," but pops right back up and starts all over again. Neither of us has installed – or attempted to install – Microsoft Money 2002 lately (as in since maybe 3 years ago?). The only way to get rid of it is to do a Control/Alt/Delete – but even that's getting to be a pain. <_< Is there any permanent way to disable that window? Thanks – and that will be the last question. Fixit
