IE Freezes - XP

Computer froze right after sending the replay above; and it froze again during reboot (that has never happened before).

OK, one service to get rid of. Click on Start-->Run then enter services.msc and click OK. Look for the service named urtclientservice and right-click and select properties on it. Stop the service and set its startup type to Disabled. Click OK until you have closed that window.

Please run HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service. In the Delete window, type urtclientservice and press OK. OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer.

Post a new HJT log.

Are you getting errors on bootup still?

All boot up errors are gone as is any trace of the Novell stuf.

OK, that log looks good. How about the freezes? Any of those recently?

Yes, it still freezes. The "worst case" seems to be when she goes into hotmail to check her email. It freezes up pretty quickly there. She also uses "facebook" a lot, and it freezes in there PDQ too. Do those applications tax any given part of XP/IE more than other applications?

She seems to think the "problem" started after automatic repeated request to update "Java script". As she remembers it, she would always clique "no", but one time she inadvertantly cliqued yes. Her feeling is the problems started after that. But I gotta caution you that she is not the most computer literate person. It may have been all a coincident.

Ok, can you go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall any Java Runtime entries you see there? Reboot and go to java.sun.com and download the latest version again and let me know if that helps.

Still freezing! I deleted 3 Java items using "add/delete" programs, rebooted, then went to java.sun and reloaded java runtime. Rebooted again and then java asked to do updates - which I did. I even ran the virus scan again It has froze twice during reboot - which I don't think has happened before??? It has also froze in Microsoft WORD, and in IE when at the Hotmail site. What next?

Ok, let's check your system files. Please go to Start -> Run -> cmd and press Enter. At the command prompt type sfc /scannow, making sure to put a space between the "c" and the slash, and then press Enter. This will run the System File Checker. Follow the prompts, and insert your Windows installation CD if requested. Then please restart your computer.

We do not see the XP disk in the collection that she has. My recollection is that the machine came with Windows 2000 and was upgraded to XP at a later date by the techs at the school. I will have to call them tomorrow and see how that handle this. They either never gave her the XP disk, or she has misplaced it. sorry for the delay

The school is sending me the Windows 98 system disk and a Windows XP upgrade disk. Apparently that is the best they can do with the way the software liscences were done. I will repost when they come and I have tried to run the "scannow" command. Thanks for your patience.

First let me wish you a very Merry Christmas!! The disks finally came on Christmas eve and I got a few minutes to fool with the PC today. It was all I could do to get the PC to boot up. It freezes all the time now - multiple times during boot up. I finally got the "sfc/scannow" command to run. It took about a half hour and there was no real "output". It just got done and went back to the "cmd" prompt. I rebooted as instructed and it ran a whole lot longer before freezing. Is there another step to take? The people at the school seem to be assuming that I will need to reload the operating system - which wipes everything out. That would seem to be like smashing a gnat with a sludge hammer, but it we are that point, then that is what we will have to do. They sent me a Window 98 recovery disk from the PC manufactuere; and the XP upgrade disk from their IT department. Again, thanks for your patience in working on my problem!
