Halfnut,

Welcome to the forum, it looks like you have some spyare on your computer.

DO THIS FIRST
Your HIJACKTHIS program is current, but it is very important that it resides in its own folder.
We will use Hijackthis (HJT) to make changes to your system and HJT will make backups of those changes,
If HJT is not in its own folder, those backups could be lost.

Easy to fix,
* just go to MY COMPUTER > YOUR C:\ DRIVE and create a new folder and name it HIJACKTHIS .
* Now scroll to where you have HJT currently, right click on the HJT icon and select CUT .
* Now open the new folder you just created and right click within that folder and select PASTE .
* Now HJT should reside in C:\HIJACKTHIS\HIJACKTHIS.EXE

What I would like you to do to go to Start> Control Panel> Add-Remove Programs and look for this program and and remove it if it is present.
begin2search

If begin2 search is not present or it won't uninstall, then go here and run the Uninstall tool
http://www.begin2sea...m/uninstall.exe

you may also have these, remove them also if present

BetterInternet
SafeSurfing

Now download CWShredder to your desktop, check for updates and run the tool and let it remove all it finds.

Open HJT Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, HJT should be the only window you have open, put a checkmark in these entries and click on Fix Checked.

Now do this..
SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS

* Click on MY COMPUTER
* Then on your C: Drive
* Then to TOOLS/ FOLDER OPTIONS/ VIEW
* Choose the radio button to SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS
* Take the checkmark out of HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES
* Then APPLY/ OK

* Don't forget to reverse this once your computer is clean

Reboot your computer into Safemode

* Go to START/ SHUT OF YOUR COMPUTER/ RESTART
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu.
* Use the UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the ENTER KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD

While in Safemode , look for this file in RED and delete it.

C:\WINDOWS\System32\nsb3A.dll

Reboot your computer Normally

Lets run the trial version of Spysweeper.

Here are the setup instructions,

Note: On that page, in the Spy Sweeper section, click the link for "Free Trial", NOT the link for "Free Spyware Scan".
Install it using the Standard Install option. (You will be asked for your e-mail address, it is safe to give it. If you receive alerts from your firewall, allow all activities for Spy Sweeper)

You will be prompted to check for updated definitions, please do so.
(This may take several minutes)

Click on Options > Sweep Options and check Sweep all Folders on Selected drives. Check Local Disc C. Under What to Sweep, check every box.

Click on Sweep and allow it to fully scan your system.

When the sweep has finished, click Remove. Click Select All and then Next

From 'Results', select the Session Log tab. Click Save to File and save the log somewhere convenient.

Exit Spy Sweeper.

Restart your computer, and then please copy and paste the SpySweeper log into this thread, along with a new HJT log.

Thanks Ken for your help. I followed your directions and below is what I got. Let me know what's next or if we're good. I've pasted the SpySweeper Log first and then a new HJT log.
Thanks Again, HalfNut :wavey:

Halfnut,

Your log is looking better but we still have a little ways to go. Keep in mind that your system was heavily infected with quite a few malware programs. Spysweeper got rid of a bunch but the log still showing traces of a RootKit Infection. A RootKit is a malicious program that loads before the operating system loads so it goes undetected. Spysweeper does a pretty good job of finding it.

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Before we begin, you need to open up Spybot Search and Destroy and disable the Tea Timer as this will prevent some fixes from working.
Open up Spybot and go to Mode> Advanced Mode> Tools > Resident> and take the checkmark out of Tea Timer.

Download and install Ewido security suite. This is the 30 day Free trial.
Ewido Security Suite
* Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop for it to double-click.
o Click on update
o You should see Update Complete when done.
o Now close out the program

Please download AproposFix © Swandog46 from here:
Aproposfix

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

* Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop.
* Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and click on run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.
* When the tool is finished, please save the contents of the log to somewhere you can find it, its important that you post the log in your next reply.

Now open HJT Scan Only, close all open windows, put a checkmark in this entry and click on Fix Checked
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.begin2search.com
Close out HJT.

Now we need to disable System Restore, we will re enable it after we are done.
* Right Click on MY COMPUTER
* Click on PROPERTIES
* Click on the SYSTEM RESTORE TAB
* Check TURN OFF SYSTEM RESTORE ON ALL DRIVES
* Click APPLY / OK

Now while still in Safemode, open up Ewido

[*] Click on scanner
[*] Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
[*] You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
[*] Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
[*] Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
[*] Click Save report.
[*] Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.

Close ewido security suite.

Reboot normally and lets re enable System Restore

TURN ON SYSTEM RESTORE

* Right Click on MY COMPUTER
* Click on PROPERTIES
* Click on the SYSTEM RESTORE TAB
* UN-Check TURN OFF SYSTEM RESTORE ON ALL DRIVES
* Click APPLY / OK

Now create a new RESTORE POINT

Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point You can name it anything you like

Now please post the log from Apropos Fix, the log from Ewido and a new HJT log. Hopefully this will get it all.

Halfnut,

Your log is looking so much better. You need to fix these three entries with HJT. You know the drill, close your browser and all open windows.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ms101.mysearc...sa/srchlft.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ms101.mysearc...sa/srchlft.html
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant = http://ms101.mysearc...sa/srchlft.html

Your Java is out of date and it is leaving your system vunerable. you can get the updates from Sun Microsystems HERE
Scroll to the middle of the page and download the JRE 5.0 Update 6
After it is installed, you can VERIFY the installtion.

Post one last HJT log and hopefully this will be it.

How is your system running now, any better or are you still having issues???

Thanks for your help. My system is running much better although it still has some issues. I tried to eliminate the three items in the HJT log and they didn't seem to want to stay gone. They kept returning. I think I finally took care of two of the three. See what you think. My HJT log is below.
Thanks Again,
HalfNut :wavey:

Halfnut,

Your log looks good except for this entry, try removing it with HJT in Safemode.

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://ms101.mysearc...sa/srchlft.html

You have Spybot Search and Destroy :thumbup: installed, make sure it is version 1.4, if not you can use the links in my signature to download and install the newer version. Also go ahead and download and install AD-AWARE SE PERSONAL 1.06. Here are the setup instructions for both programs.

Please use the links in my signature to download and install both of the following free programs that are highly respected from the people in the Malware Removal Community.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4

* If you have the older version 1.3, remove it via ADD-REMOVE PROGRAMS in the Control Panel.

Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Add-Remove Programs scroll to that program and click on Remove.

* During Installation, just follow all the defaults.
* Go to Mode and click on Advanced Mode
* Then to Updates Search for Updates
* If you get a Bad Checksum Error, just choose a different download location.
* Then to Settings/ File Sets and take the checkmark out of Usage Tracks
* Then to Tools/ Hosts Files click on Add Spybot S&D Hosts Files.
* Then to Tools/ IE Tweeks and put a checkmark in Lock the Hosts Files
* Then to Immunize. Up at the top by the GREEN SIGN, click on Immunize.
* Then to Search and Destroy/ Check for Problems
* Let it scan your system
* Then to Fix Problems and fix all it finds.

RE-BOOT your computer.

AD-AWARE SE PERSONAL 1.06

If you have an older version of Ad-Aware, no need to uninstall it, it will prompt you to uninstall it during
the set up process

* During installation, follow all the defaults.
* Start the program and Check for Updates
* Choose Perform a Full System Scan
* Take the checkmark out of Search for Negligable Files
* Run the scan
* When it is done, Right Click on One of the Entries/ Select All/ Next and let it remove all that if finds.

Download and install Clean Up

* Click on Options
* Move the slider to Custom Scan
* Put a checkmark in the following ONLY

* Empty Recycle Bins
* Delete Cookies
* Delete Prefetch files
* Cleanup! All Users

When your done, post a new HJT log and lets see if anything else needs to go.

Halfnut,

Is this a program that you know about and use Splash Screen, if so then leave it alone, if you dont want it you can remove it via Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel. If you remove it then remove this line also with HJT. I'm sure its ok but cant find any info on it.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Splash Screen] F:\SPLASHSCREEN\SplashScreen.exe

Otherwise your good to go :thumbup:

Here are some free tools and tips to keep you more secure.. Be sure to run the one for System Restore because everything we removed is backed up in that program and if you ever use it to revert your system to an earlier date you will become infected all over again.
:rant2:

Here are some free programs and tips for keeping your system up to date, and to help keep all the riff raff out of your system.

* Download and Install CCleaner, Click on RUN TOOL, when you run the Issues Scan and it asks
you to back up the registry Say Yes.

Now that your clean, we need to erase all possible older infected files that may still be lurking on your system.
* Clean out your TEMP FILES
* This procedure should be run from SAFEMODE for better results.

To Enter SAFEMODE

* Go to START/ SHUT OF YOUR COMPUTER/ RESTART
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu.
* Use the UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the ENTER KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD

* Go to My Computer/ C: Drive/ Documents and Settings/ Local Settings/ Every User on this Computer
and delete all the contents of the Temp Folder

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Temp and delete all the contents of the Temp Folder

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Prefetch and remove all the contents of the Prefetch Folder.
But not the Prefetch folder itself.

NOW RE-BOOT NORMALLY

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
* When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now Empty your Recycle Bin

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your
system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* ClickProperties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember

* Make sure that your ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE is up to date and run a full scan at least once aweek.

* Here are Free Anti-Virus Programs if you need one

AVG Free Edition
AntVir Personal Edition

* Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.

* Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

* Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and
give you the option to deny the change.

* IE- Spyad IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains
in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed,
although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

* Firefox Browser
It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use
them both. When it asks you if you want it to be your default browser, say NO and take the checkmark out of the box to ask you again. After you use this
for awhile, you will want to make it your default.

* Thunderbird Mail There companion mail program was highly favored in PCWorld Magazine,
this has a good spam filter and is more secure than Outlook Express.

* Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't
access the internet without it.

* WINDOWS UPDATES - Enable Automatic Updates
Right click on MY COMPUTER/Click on PROPERTIES/ AUTOMATIC UPDATES and put a mark in the radio button
DOWNLOAD UPDATES FOR ME BUT LET ME CHOOSE WHEN TO INSTALL THEM.

* Go to START/ CONTROL PANEL> PERFROMANCE AND MAINTENANCE> REARRANGE ITEMS ON YOUR HARD DISK TO MAKE PROGRAMS RUN FASTER
This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to keep your system running good. The first time you run it, it may take awhile.

Thanks for using Tom Coyote, I will keep this thread open for a few days in case you have any other questions.

Merry
Xmas to you also.

Ken :D
