Never should have clicked on THAT!

Well I clicked on something I shouldn't have – and despite telling MS's Anti-Spyware not to install any of it, I was infected with whole bunch of garbage. I scanned with MS's Anti-Spyware and updated my Ad-Aware and cleaned those puppies out. (see log below from Ad-Aware). But something apparently remained because I am still getting brower windows popping up with ads that are keyed off of my Search entries or web activity. I search for Las Vegas, I get Casino ads. I search for dog food….well, you get the idea.

Ad-Aware, Norton, Sys-Clean and MS Anti-Spyware come up with clean scans.

I'm hoping you can help.

I know exactly when and where it happened. I clicked on a Media Player link and that's when it started.

Jay - aka - email edited out by wng
Further to the above - I watch my Prefetch directory pretty regularly and keep it cleaned out. Since my infection, I noticed two new Prefetch entries MYSHGINA.EXE and NTDHLP32.EXE Neither showed up on a disk search for that file name but when I search the Registry for MYSHGINA.EXE it shows up under Current User, Software, Microsoft, Search Assistant. This seems to fit the pattern of browser popups that I am getting. Now - since neither Adware nor MS Anti-Spyware seem to recognize this nasty thing, how can I get rid of it? and anything else it may have spawned? Is there any significance to the NTDHLP32.EXE file and the fact that I can't find it in the registry? Help please!
*user being assisted in IRC chat*

Please run this tool:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FxIstbar.exe

Then,
We are going to install Ewido AV. I have included instructions below, but there is also a PDF created by Spydie here if that suits you better.

Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • NOTE: If you already have a main AV, then you should NOT install the ewido guard. Just install the scanner.
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed don't run the program just yet!

Please print the instructions below.
Then reboot your computer
As soon as it starts to boot, rapidly press the f8 key.
select safe mode from the menu
If you are still unsure, see here
Doubleclick on HijackThis.
Then click on the button that says run a system scan
Then place a check next to the following items: (don't hit fix just yet!)

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…rch/search.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…rch/search.html
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…//www.yahoo.com

Now close all open programs (including your internet browsers
click "fix (lower left hand corner of HijackThis. Once HijackThis has finished removing the lines, continue on.

Run Ewido by doing the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

Finallly, We need to do a search. Start | Search | For Files and Folders.
Expand Search Options, check Advanced Options, check Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search Subfolders.
Paste this into the Search for files and folders named box:

c:\DOCUME~1\JAYGLE~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\ICD1.tmp","c:\documents and settings\jay X\local settings\temp\iinstall.exe","c:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\ysbactivex.dll","c:\documents and settings\jay X\local settings\temp\iinstall.exe","c:\Program Files\SurfAccuracy","c:\Program Files\Internet Optimizer","c:\documents and settings\jay X\local settings\temp\optimize.exe","c:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\UniDist.ocx","NSupd9x.inf","dial.dll",NTDHLP32.EXE","MYSHGINA.EXE"

If any of these files are found please delete them.
Please give me a new HJT log and a new ewido log.

I ran things out of order last night by mistake.

First I ran the Symantec tool

Then, by mistake, I did the Ewido run before the HiJackThis fix.

After this Ewido run finished, I ran HiJackThis and eliminated the entries that you told me to eliminate and then
ran Ewido again with this log result. Of the files you told me to look for, only NTDHLP32.EXE was present in the Windows\system32 file folder.
I eliminated it.

The entry for Search Assistant still exists in the Registry.

Additionally, the c:\Windows\SrchAsst folder still exists and has files in it. You didn't ask me to delete that folder or it's contents.

Please advise on next steps.

Thanks.

Download http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/winpfind.php

Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.
Please print these instructions as you will be going into safe mode.
Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by following the following steps:

Reboot.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode

Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe. When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to scart scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while. When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.
Here are the results WARNING: not all files found by this scanner are bad. Consult with a knowledgable person before proceeding. If you see a message in the titlebar saying "Not responding…" you can ignore it. Windows somethimes displays this message due to the high volume of disk I/O. As long as the hard disk light is flashing, the program is still working properly. »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» Windows OS and Versions »»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»»» Product Name: Microsoft Windows XP Current Wng I tried running Kaspersky overnight but it must have failed or lost the internet connection. In any case, I found the MYSHGINA.EXE file – not sure why search didn't find it earlier. I must have done a search at least a dozen times. MYSHGINA was living in c:\program files\Youagent. In addition to some other DLL's and such, it had a cache of over 4000 files and the timing of the files matched the date of my initial infection. I went into Safe Mode and Killbox'ed that puppy and all it's little sick puppy friends. So far so good and for the first time, MSYHGINA.exe didn't load to Prefetch. Also this morning Norton picked up a CMUPhone.dll adware trojan but couldn't delete it. It also went to the Killbox. Norton did kill this one this morning. Source: C:\WINDOWS\system32\vb6wmpcd.exe Description: The file C:\WINDOWS\system32\vb6wmpcd.exe is a Spyware threat. Click for more information about this threat : Spyware.Apropos.C Adware ran clean this morning. I went to my Norton logs – first time I have looked at them and found this entry. It seems to be recurring with some frequency lately but had not been previously. Is this the effect of some sort of malware that's actually telling Norton to turn off the NetBIOS block so it can load through that port? Details: Internet Worm Protection setting "Port Block Allow NetBIOS" changed. Old Value: 1. I changed Norton to block incoming Netbios traffic and password protected the Options change feature. At the moment, I haven't been able to induce any popups. I'll check again tonight and if I'm clear I'll leave you a message on Sat and we can close this off. Many thanks for your help so far. Hope you aced those tests Slammer6000 New Value: 0.

ok. Just to make sure, I would like you to run this tool:

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix © Swandog46 from here:
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/aproposfix.exe

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

and fyi i got a 102 on my AP psych test and a 100 on my AP us history test :D
so it's all good.

*still being helped in chat*
Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Lets reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot. http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=2501

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE, NOT on a regular basis

We need to re hide system files. To do so, please follow the steps below:
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Put a check by "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Check "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
UPDATING WINDOWS AND INTERNET EXPLORER

IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and Internet Explorer to protect your computer from the malware that is around on the Internet. Please go to the windows update site to get the critical updates.
If the Service Pack 2 download is too big, you can get a free CD from Microsoft here!
If you are running Microsoft Office, or any portion thereof, go to the Microsoft's Office Update site and make sure you have at least all the critical updates installed (Free) Microsoft Office Update.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure

This can be done by following these simple instructions:
From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
Click once on the Security tab
Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
Click once on the Custom Level button.
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
Change the allow paste operations via script to Disable
When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.
  • Download Adaware
Adaware is a free program. It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks. For more information, see this tutorial
The program is available for download here
  • Download Spybot
Spybot is a scanner like adaware. It scans for spyware and other malicious programs. It is important to have both Adaware and Spybot on your computer because each program provides unique detection and pretection measures. Spybot has preventitive tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer.
To see how to set this up as well as more spybot features, see here
Spybot can be downloaded at this location
  • Download SpywareBlaster
Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes "kill bits" in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here
You can download SpywareBlaster here here
  • Download iespyad
It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the "bad" webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).
If you need help understanding how it works, there is a tutorial here
    Download it here
  • hosts file:
    • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
    • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
    • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
    • However, it can slow down certain computers.
    • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
    • Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen)
    • Click run
    • In the dialog box, type services.msc
    • hit enter, then locate dns client
    • Highlight it, then double-click it.
    • On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
    • Click ok
  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:
Computer Safety On line - List of free Anti virus programs
  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out. See here to choose one
  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For more info, check this webpage out.
    See here to choose one
Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Run the spybot and adaware regularly. (Once or twice a week minimum.)
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system… problems etc.

Have a great day,
wng B)
