My kid's laptop now has Winfixer 2005 popups plus some other popups. Also, Internet Explorer seems corrupted. Whenever a new IE window opens as a result of clicking on a link or you do "File/New/Window", when you try to click on the previous IE page, the page is blank or even has some of the desktop wallpaper showing through the blank page. You end up just having to close the page because it seems frozen. I've used Spybot and Adaware, but Winfixer and the popups keep returning. Here is my log for review. Thanks in advance for any assistance in removing these annoyances!

RRK, Welcome to the forum, sorry about the delay, but logs are coming in faster than we can get to them. It looks like you have a Vundo infection on your system that is causing you all this grief. If you have not resolved your issue and still need my assistance, post a new HJT log into this thread and we will get to work cleaning you up. Ken :D

RRK,

Your computer is infected with the Vundo Trojan, I am going to post a fix for you. It is important that you run it from Safemode or it won't work. The fix is going to ask you for two files, I suggest you copy these two files into Windows Notepad and save the file to your desktop so that you will have them to copy and paste into the fix for accuraccy. Take your time and read through the instructions, this is not hard but accuaccy is important.

These are the two files. It will ask you for this one first
C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvvu.dll

This will be the second one
C:\WINDOWS\system32\uvvwa.*

Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Thanks to Atribune for this fix

Please download VundoFix© to your desktop.
* Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
* This will create a VundoFix© folder on your desktop.

* After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode.
* You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears.
* Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.

* Once in safe mode open the VundoFix© folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
* You will first be presented with a warning.

* It should look like this

VundoFix V2.15 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
Press enter to continue....

* At this point press enter one time.
* Next you will see:

Please Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
and then press enter:

* At this point, please type the following file path.
C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvvu.dll

* Press Enter to continue with the fix.
* Next you will see:

Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum staff then press enter:

* At this point please type the following file path
C:\WINDOWS\system32\uvvwa.* make sure you include .* at the end of the second file

This will be the Vundo filename spelled backwards. Be sure to include .* at the end of this file.
* Press Enter to continue with the fix.
* The fix will run then HijackThis will open, if it does not open automatically please open it manually.

* In HiJackThis> Scan Only , please place a checkmark next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED

* R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
* R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
* R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html
* R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
* R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapp...//www.yahoo.com
* R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Connection Wizard,ShellNext = http://ie.redirect.h...sario&pf=laptop
* O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {B313D637-F405-4052-AC37-E2119AB3C8F8} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvvu.dll
* O20 - Winlogon Notify: awvvu - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvvu.dll

* After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis.
* Press enter to exit the program then manually reboot your computer.
* Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Hi Ken,

Attached please find the 3 files requested. Please forgive me, but I will need to hit the sack in order to get up early tomorrow morning and make the long commute to my workplace. I'll be able to return to this laptop tomorrow night. I hope you don't mind. Thanks again for the assistance and I look forward to your suggestions tomorrow.

RRK,

Run HJT Scan Only in Normal Mode, close your browser and all open windows ( the only window you should have open is HJT) , put a checkmark in these entries and click on fix checked.

Ken, I’m at my workplace right now and don’t have the laptop to try your latest recommendation, but have a question for you. The lines you want me to place a check by in HJT, the first line for example, am I looking for a line in my HJT scan that will have the /…/ in it precisely like that or will there most likely be characters in that spot? When I ran HJT last night and put check marks against the entries you recommended in your 12/8 7:59pm post, I did not find exactly the lines your post listed, i.e., none of those lines had a /…/ part in them, but I did put check marks against them if the lines were the same except for the /…/ part (they had some characters in the spot where your lines had the /…/). Hope you follow my question. Thanks and will do what you instructed tonight. RRK

Just look for these lines in HJT, I am not sure of what you are referring to in relation to /…/ I may have had them to close together and it made it confusing.

There will be 6 lines starting with R1, One line starting with 02, and the last line starts with 020

Ken, I don’t want to take up too much of your valuable time with this question, but what I was trying to say was that last night I didn’t find any R1 HKCU or HKLM lines that actually had /…/ in them. Rather, they matched the R1 lines you posted to look for but had either alpha or numeric characters in the entire line and didn’t have /…/ anywhere in them. Therefore, last night I didn’t find any lines that matched the lines you said to look for character for character. But I fixed through HJT the lines I found that seemed the closest to the ones you wanted me to fix. Anyway, tonight I will run HJT in normal mode and look in the scan for the entries you’ve mentioned in your last post and will post another HJT log here for you to see. Thanks again for your assistance. RRK

RRK, :D

It looks like the Vundo Infection is gone, good job :thumbup: , but you missed one line in HJT, it looks like yahoo but it could redirect you to a different site. Easy to fix, just run HJT again Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, check this entry and click on Fix Checked.

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapp.../search/ie.html

How is your computer running now, post back with a new log and I will give you some tips and free tools to help keep your system more secure.

Hi Ken,

Fixed that line and reran HJT log. Also, before I saw your reply and fixed that line, I ran the Pandasoftware activescan again and am going to paste the results here first before the new HJT log in case it's results tell you something that needs investigating. Thanks.

RRK,

Spyware:Spyware/Virtumonde Not disinfected C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtqq.dll

This PC is still infected.

Try this new fix:

Download VirtumundoBeGone.exe from here and save it to your Desktop.
http://secured2k.hom...mundoBeGone.exe

Locate and double click VirtumundoBeGone.exe to run it - follow the instructions.
When the tool has finished running, exit it - post any log it produces.
Reboot your PC and post a fresh HJT log AND a description of how your PC is running

Hi Ken,

Did what you requested. The laptop seems to be performing okay. Haven't noticed any popups lately, although the laptop hasn't been used as much since I've been working with you on it. Something I noticed on one of the scans by one of the programs--I thought I saw something that indicated that the vituemondo bug was in a file area like "restore". Could it be only in XP's restore feature file area and thus not a problem for us now? Appreciate the persistence on this. Here's the two files:

RRK,

That file could possible be backed up in your System Restore Program, lets flush it out.

TURN Off then TURN ON SYSTEM RESTORE

Everytime you start WINDOWS, SYSTEM RESTORE creates a restore point, or if you
manually create a restore point on your own, all WINDOWS files are backed up including any that
we just cleaned that were infected with Malware or a Virus. This is the only way to clean out these files.

(You will lose all PREVIOUS RESTORE POINTS which are likely to be infected)

Turn off System Restore.

* Right Click on MY COMPUTER
* Click on PROPERTIES
* Click on the SYSTEM RESTORE TAB
* Check TURN OFF SYSTEM RESTORE ON ALL DRIVES
* Click APPLY / OK

RE-BOOT YOUR COMPUTER

TURN ON SYSTEM RESTORE

* Right Click on MY COMPUTER
* Click on PROPERTIES
* Click on the SYSTEM RESTORE TAB
* UN-Check TURN OFF SYSTEM RESTORE ON ALL DRIVES
* Click APPLY / OK

Now create a new RESTORE POINT

* Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You can name the restore point anything you like that you can remember

Also, just to be more safe than sorry, make sure that you still have windows enabled to show all files and folders and look for this file and see if its there. Let me know if it is, if it is you will have to do the Safemode thing to delete it. If it wont go, I have a quick program that will get rid of it.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\awtqq.dll <--This File
Look for it backwards also.

The one security issue I see is that your Java is out of date. Go here
And download and install JRE 5.0 Update 6 Java is plugging some holes that could compromise your computer.
Then you can go here and verify the installation.

Post back and let me know what you find, at that point I have some tips and free tools to help keep you more secure on the internet, and then you can continue with your Xmas Shopping. :thumbup:
