[shelljj]

I have a notepad icon that pops up on my desktop multiple times. I have sent it to the recycle bin twice and it has come back. The name under the icon always says "strclearinner". I don't know what this is or what I'm supposed to do with it. Is it something I should keep, or is it something "malicious". Thank you in advance. This is the most recent log.

I don't see to much bad on your system, not to say that something could be hidden that is not showing up.

This program is something I would not want on my system, most file sharing programs cause more problems than they do good. I read just recently that this iMesh program could be the cause of the problem you are having. But this is your call to remove it. If you use and need this program that so be it, if not I suggest you remove it in the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel. You can read about it here and make up your own mind.

You have Spybot Search and Destroy installed , but make sure it is the latest version 1.4, if not you can download and install the latest version from the links in my signature at the bottom of this post. Here are the setup instructions, make sure to update and run a scan removing all it finds. I would also like you to download and instal AD-Aware SE Personal 1.06 via my signature. Both these programs are free and highly regarded by the people in the Malware Community. Be sure to reboot when running one program before you run the next one.



Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4

* If you have the older version 1.3, remove it via ADD-REMOVE PROGRAMS in the Control Panel.

Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Add-Remove Programs scroll to that program and click on Remove.

* During Installation, just follow all the defaults.
* Go to Mode and click on Advanced Mode
* Then to Updates Search for Updates
* If you get a Bad Checksum Error, just choose a different download location.
* Then to Settings/ File Sets and take the checkmark out of Usage Tracks
* Then to Tools/ Hosts Files click on Add Spybot S&D Hosts Files.
* Then to Tools/ IE Tweeks and put a checkmark in Lock the Hosts Files
* Then to Immunize. Up at the top by the GREEN SIGN, click on Immunize.
* Then to Search and Destroy/ Check for Problems
* Let it scan your system
* Then to Fix Problems and fix all it finds.

RE-BOOT your computer.



AD-AWARE SE PERSONAL 1.06

If you have an older version of Ad-Aware, no need to uninstall it, it will prompt you to uninstall it during
the set up process

* During installation, follow all the defaults.
* Start the program and Check for Updates
* Choose Perform a Full System Scan
* Take the checkmark out of Search for Negligable Files
* Run the scan
* When it is done, Right Click on One of the Entries/ Select All/ Next and let it remove all that if finds.

Lets run a couple of online virus scanners, if they give the option to Auto Clean, go for it.

Trendmicro Housecall
BitDefender Online Scan

After your done with all the scans, lets download and run CCleaner. This will clean all the unnecessary temp files and such from your system.

* Run the Issues Scan < When it asks you to backup the Registry..Say Yes

When your done, post a new HJT log along with anything the online scanners found and could not fix.

I already have AD-Aware SE Personal 1.06. My Spybot Search and Destroy is updated to 1.4. I do have a few questions about some of the clean up tools that I have on this thing before I download a bunch more. I hope you don't mind questions ...Ok, I have on here already Adaware SE, AVG Personal, Microsoft Antispyware, CWShredder, StartPage Guard, Spybot Search and Destroy, Cleanup (which is at: http://cleanup.stevengould.org), Spywareblaster, RegSeeker (which is at:ttp://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm), ewido and of course HijackThis. All that can be are updated weekly, and run weekly. Do I need to do away with any of these and get the ones you recommended, or do I keep these and get them. I'm sorry that this is a lot to look at, but I got popped by a Trojan once and now I'm very, very careful with the scanning issues. Thanks for taking the time to do the things you do.

Questions, no problem.

It is important that after you run one program and remove entries that you reboot your computer before you run the next program.

AD-Aware SE Personal 1.06 <-- Good Program
Run a scan every week or so, have it set to Smart Scan and if it finds a lot of junk, then rerun it with a Full System Scan. Take the checkmark out of Negligible Risk Files.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4.<-- Good Program
Run a scan every week or so, don't forget to check for updates first.

Microsoft Antispyware <-- Good Program

Spywareblaster <-- Good Program
Update it every few weeks and Enable All Protection

RegSeeker <-- Good Program

Ewido <-- Good Program
If you downloaded the trial, you can still keep it after the 30 days, it will run with limited functionallity, you will still be able to get updates and run a scan and remove what it finds

Cleanup <-- Good Program
But you can get yourself in trouble with this program, it is a little powerful if you dont know what your doing.

Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (make sure nothing else is checked!):

* Empty Recycle Bins
* Delete Cookies
* Delete Prefetch files
* Cleanup! All Users

Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

CWShredder <-- Good Program,
but you only need to run it if your infected with a Cool Web Search Infection.

Do not fix anything on your own, removing the wrong entries could make your system inoperable.

We have still not addressed your problem, your log looks ok but there could be something hidden.

Download and install the Trial of Spysweeper.

Set it up this way.
Download the trial version of Spysweeper

Look on the bottom of the page for the free 14 day Trial. This program is the closest thing to a Silver Bullet for removing Spyware.
Note: On that page, in the Spy Sweeper section, click the link for "Free Trial", NOT the link for "Free Spyware Scan".
Install it using the Standard Install option. (You will be asked for your e-mail address, it is safe to give it. If you receive alerts from your firewall, allow all activities for Spy Sweeper)

You will be prompted to check for updated definitions, please do so.
(This may take several minutes)

Click on Options > Sweep Options and check Sweep all Folders on Selected drives. Check Local Disc C. Under What to Sweep, check every box.

Click on Sweep and allow it to fully scan your system.

When the sweep has finished, click Remove. Click Select All and then Next

From 'Results', select the Session Log tab. Click Save to File and save the log somewhere convenient.

Exit Spy Sweeper.

You still have iMesh on your system. This could or could not be the root of your concern. Read about it at this other site and make up your own mind to remove it. Most file sharing programs are bad news that come with more than you expected. I know I would never allow any of those programs on my computer. You can always remove it and if your problem is still present, you can always reinstall it.

You can go to the Add-Remove Programs in the Control Panel and remove it if you wish. If you remove it you also have to remove this line in HJT.

Spysweeper found nothing out of the ordinary on your system. So whether you remove iMesh or not is up to you. Your log is clean of any Malware or Viruses so at this point there is nothing else I can do for you.

Here are some free programs and tips for keeping your system up to date, and to help keep all the riff raff out of your system.

* Download and Install CCleaner, Click on RUN TOOL, when you run the Issues Scan and it asks
you to back up the registry Say Yes.

Now that your clean, we need to erase all possible older infected files that may still be lurking on your system.
* Clean out your TEMP FILES
* This procedure should be run from SAFEMODE for better results.

To Enter SAFEMODE

* Go to START/ SHUT OF YOUR COMPUTER/ RESTART
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu.
* Use the UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the ENTER KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD

* Go to My Computer/ C: Drive/ Documents and Settings/ Local Settings/ Every User on this Computer
and delete all the contents of the Temp Folder

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Temp and delete all the contents of the Temp Folder

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Prefetch and remove all the contents of the Prefetch Folder.
But not the Prefetch folder itself.

NOW RE-BOOT NORMALLY


* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
* When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now Empty your Recycle Bin

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your
system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* ClickProperties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember

* Make sure that your ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE is up to date and run a full scan at least once aweek.

* Here are Free Anti-Virus Programs if you need one

* Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.

* Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

* Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and
give you the option to deny the change.

* IE- Spyad IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains
in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed,
although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

* Firefox Browser
It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use
them both. When it asks you if you want it to be your default browser, say NO and take the checkmark out of the box to ask you again. After you use this
for awhile, you will want to make it your default.

* Thunderbird Mail There companion mail program was highly favored in PCWorld Magazine,
this has a good spam filter and is more secure than Outlook Express.

* Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't
access the internet without it.

* WINDOWS UPDATES - Enable Automatic Updates
Right click on MY COMPUTER/Click on PROPERTIES/ AUTOMATIC UPDATES and put a mark in the radio button
DOWNLOAD UPDATES FOR ME BUT LET ME CHOOSE WHEN TO INSTALL THEM.

* Go to START/ CONTROL PANEL> PERFROMANCE AND MAINTENANCE> REARRANGE ITEMS ON YOUR HARD DISK TO MAKE PROGRAMS RUN FASTER
This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to keep your system running good. The first time you run it, it may take awhile.

Thanks for all your help with this. By the way, I usually run defrag every couple of weeks. I clean out my temp. files and cookies every time I log off via internet options on the control panel. I may go to extremes sometimes, but hopefully it'll never be too much. Thanks again for your help and (no offence) I hope I don't have to come back soon.
