Persistant adware (log attached)

Have been fighting with this for a few weeks now, the only connection I can really make now is to Neopets which I started playing on about the same time. Anyone know if they install adware/spyware?
This one is persistant. Spybot and Adaware were finding cookies and successfully deleting them, but they would keep coming back, but then even after I ran McAfee virus scan and both spyware detectors and they came clean I'm still getting popups.

They're coming in an Internet Explorer window even though I'm using Mozilla Firefox as my browser. And I only seem to get popups while I'm browsing.

OK I contined to look through the posts here and saw one with a link to free trial of Spy Sweeper, so I downloaded and installed that and I think it got the culprit, I haven't had any pop ups in several days now. But I'm attaching a current HJT log just to be sure. Couple side questions... I was hoping that someone could answer me other topic about which malware detection software is the best... here's a link to it.

Malware question

One more quickie, that's got me stumped. Couple times I've gotten a random error message saying that PHOESIZE.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close. It apparently is not connected to me doing anything else. But, I ran a google search on the file and it turned up nothing. So now I'm on a quest to find out what the heck this file is. My nearest guess, if it's not a virus(mcafee reports clean scan) is that it's related to Photoshop or some other photo editor program that I've got.

It's not so much a problem, as much as it is a determination now on my part to find out what this file is? Doesn't show up very often at all, and even then I can just click close with no further fuss.

oh yea, I did search the registry for phoesize and only thing it matched on was my jpg snapshot of the error. Same with a search of the C: drive only matched that jpg oh and this line in the windows/prefetch dir PHOESIZE.EXE-3A4135EC.pf I'm clueless here LOL

I suggest you do this:

I'd go in there and delete it.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED PROFILE USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

When I tried to reset web settings I got an error message saying "Unable to reset Web settings."

Upon reboot the task bar/start menu reverted to the new xp taskbar, I prefer the classic look, and everything seemed very sluggish, and often locked up. I rebooted and it locked up on shutdown. Opening the task manager I noticed a stuck process, I think it was called sysfader, closed that, but it was still locked, so I hit the power switch. But when I booted again, everything seemed fine.

Right now everything seems to be running fine, but have only been playing around for a few minutes.

I prefer the classic look,

How is it running any issues?

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Click Start> My Computer, select the Tools menu and then Folder Options, after the new window appears select the View tab…]
This time select the: Restore Defaults
Select: Apply, and click OK

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Done, and yes I did get back to the classic look. It actually happened automatically upon the second reboot. Everything seems to be running just fine now. Thank you, I really do appreciate the help. Joe
