PentiumIII, 500mhz, 256mbRAM, WIN98SE
sometimes, for no apparent reason, Windows won't load but hang up after the WIN splash screen on a black screen, no keyboard or mouse active
when I restart the computer, the DOS screen comes up with the "Windows didn't load correctly last time, etc." message plus the choices of continuing in normal, safe mode, etc.
normally it will just load correctly by rebooting in normal mode
last time it took several tries, I ended up by doing it with step by step confirmation (which didn't tell me anything unusual), the bootlog doesn't tell me anything either
questions:
1) is this the right forum to ask?
2) what specific information would anyone need to be able to resolve this problem?
thanks for any help
Yes, you are in the right spot.
How many icons are in your system tray (were your clock is)? Click on start, then run, and type msconfig. Under the "Startup" tab uncheck everything except "scanregistry"" .. "systray" …."Taskmgr".. then click "Apply".. then click "Ok"… then reboot.. when desktop loads you will get a popup saying "your using windows system configuration…etc..etc".. just place a check in the box at the bottom of window that says "dont show this again" then click ok.
post back if you have more problems
just M Audio Delta Control Panel and AntiVir Guard icons
Under the "Startup" tab uncheck everything except "scanregistry"" .. "systray" …."Taskmgr"..
isn't that a little drastic? (then there'll be no Display drivers, etc. - don't quite dare do this
here's what's running:
»Run
*WinFast_Gamma=rundll32.exe wfcpl.dll,DllLoadGammaRampSettings
*EM_EXEC=c:\logitech\mouse\system\em_exec.exe
*LoadPowerProfile=Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,LoadCurrentPwrScheme
*StillImageMonitor=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\STIMON.EXE
*M-Audio Delta Control Panel=DeltTray.exe
*NvCplDaemon=RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup
*nwiz=nwiz.exe /install
*NvMediaCenter=RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit
*AVGCtrl="C:\PROGRA~1\AVPERS~1\AVGCTRL.EXE" /min
what if anything should/can I not run? and will that make a difference?
sn't that a little drastic? (then there'll be no Display drivers, etc. - don't quite dare do this
No, it is not drastic. Your not uninstalling or deletiing anything. Your simply keeping all that… stuff… from loading with windows. it has absolutly nothing to do at all with drivers.
That cant be all thats running, if it is… then theres your problem. You MUST have the items checked I mentioned above. I see none of them.
(again.. whatever you feel like you need to have starting up with windows, you can go back and place a check mark by it later. Everything in your system tray is constantly sending and receiving information.. taking up your resources. None of what you have listed HAS to be running.. at all)
I can't copy what's on the msconfig startup screen, but here is the Startup Programs list from System Information (and these ar all checked in the msconfig Startup)
load Win.ini WPSHRC.EXE
WinFast_Gamma Registry (Machine Run) rundll32.exe wfcpl.dll,DllLoadGammaRampSettings
EM_EXEC Registry (Machine Run) c:\logitech\mouse\system\em_exec.exe
LoadPowerProfile Registry (Machine Run) Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,LoadCurrentPwrScheme

AVGCtrl Registry (Machine Run) "C:\PROGRA~1\AVPERS~1\AVGCTRL.EXE" /min
in addition to these checked ones, there are also (unchecked) the following items:
AIM
Task Monitor
System Tray
Load Power Profile (strangely enough this is duplicated, exactly the same - this is already an entry in the above list)
ScanRegistry doesn't seem to be present
?

Ok you've got it backwards..you NEED these CHECKED
Task Monitor
System Tray
Load Power Profile
ScanRegistry
The "Load Power Profile" will appear as many times as there are user accounts stored on the computer. It remembers your settings like themes and is not important.
Before you do anything else.. fix that, because that is a major problem and will solve your problem. Uncheck everything that is currently checked, check whats not (except AIM.. dont need that one). Then post back. Afterwards then you need to do some maintinance.
Now, what you need to do is run SFC (System File Checker)) but let me warn you that Windows 98 sometimes doesnt play well with SFC. It will pull the wrong version of files sometimes. However, I believe this is only an issue with 98… not 98 2nd edt.
You NEED scanregistry.. and you need to start with Windows, regaurdless of how you get it. If you have an original Windows 98 cd then put it in and click on start/ then run/ type command (or command.exe or cmd) at the pompt type SFC /scannow and let it do its thing. Then make sure…
by the way, I had already run SFC once (withour repairing anything because I don't know what to and if …)
this is what it looked like:
mssign32.dll Ignored 5.131.1877. 23-04-99 5.131.1877. 23-04-99 No
cryptui.dll Ignored 5.131.1877. 23-04-99 5.131.1877. 23-04-99 No
softpub.dll Ignored 5.131.1877. 23-04-99 5.131.1877. 23-04-99 No

msoss.dll Ignored 5.131.1877. 23-04-99 5.131.1877. 23-04-99 No
setupx.dll Ignored
CSAPI3T1.DLL Ignored 1.0.2415 15-12-98 1.0.2415 15-12-98 No
RAGENT.DLL Ignored 9.0.2717 18-03-99 9.0.2717 18-03-99 No
FP4AUTL.DLL Ignored 4.0.2.2717 20-03-99 4.0.2.2717 20-03-99 No
Ok open your registry (click on start/ then run/ then type regedit) and navigate your way to this key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run].
To enable the Registry Checker create a string value called "ScanRegistry" and set it to "C:\Windows\Scanregw.exe /autorun".
To disable the Registry Checker delete the string value called "ScanRegistry".
The change will take effect the next time the system is started.
in msconfig startup I unchecked everything, then checked only task mon, sys tray and load power prof
then re-booted
seems to work,
except in my music notation program (Finale 2005) all the fonts show incorrectly - which item is now missing for this? (would that be SillImage Monitor?)
and the AntiVir AVGuard program is of course not loading (I'll just check that again to enable it?)
Ran SFC and repaired whatever came up (the files I've posted earlier)
- but three of them couldn't be found on the WIN98SE CD:
CSAPI3T1.DLL Ignored 1.0.2415 15-12-98 1.0.2415 15-12-98 No
RAGENT.DLL Ignored 9.0.2717 18-03-99 9.0.2717 18-03-99 No
FP4AUTL.DLL Ignored 4.0.2.2717 20-03-99 4.0.2.2717 20-03-99 No
do they matter?
Now, as for editing the registry for ScanRegistry: this is a bit over my head ……
Ok I'll open the registry (click on start/ then run/ then type regedit) and navigate your way to this key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run].
To enable the Registry Checker (HOW IS THIS DONE EXACTLY? WHAT'S A STRING VALUE? WHERE? EXACT WORDING? —->)create a string value called "ScanRegistry" and set it to "C:\Windows\Scanregw.exe /autorun".
To disable the Registry Checker delete the string value called "ScanRegistry".
WHY DISABLE IT? OR DOES THIS NOT ALWAYS HAVE TO RUN (as you suggest earlier)?
thx
back in msconfig startup I now again checked
1) StillImage Monitor (which did NOT resolve the font problem …..)
and 2) load Win.ini WPSHRC.EXE (because that's the printer, and that DID enable it again)
however …………..
when I rebooted to put these changes into effect ……. guess what …… it got stuck again (twice), rebooting twice in normal mode then got it going again
and …. looking for bootlog.prv I see that that file is a month old, and bootlog.txt is from yesterday - so apparently they don´t get created everytime?
now what?
is it the printer? (it's a Canon LBP-660)
and why are the fonts gone in Finale? (they seem to be OK in general, Word, etc.)
and the answer (to some of it) was ……….. to disable
NvCplDaemon Registry (Machine Run) RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup
was NOT a good idea (re-enabling it brought the Finale fonts back to normal)
so far no further hangups at booting
should I still add ScanRegistry? (see questions above)
was NOT a good idea (re-enabling it brought the Finale fonts back to normal)
System Tray icon used to change display settings, change the clock rate and memory speed for nVidia based graphics cards. This is unnecessary since you can easily configure these settings the way you want them in the Display Properties and not have to mess with them again. Has absolutly nothing to do with icons or fonts.
If you do not follow my instructions, I can not help you. So if anyone else is following this thread.. please..jump in.
