Hello Stewart, and yes the TomCoyote site was down for a while today.

I got hit with this: wuwmsg.exe is trying to access the internet

You must have this spelled wrong, Google does not recognize it? It is possible it is a valid program trying to access the internet. Check the spelling and post it.

Also, after configuring and scanning both Spybot and Ad-Aware, once i rebooted i was met with a security shield in my task bar telling me norton firewall and antivirus, at first it didnt

IF you are running Norton Firewall then the Windows XP SP2 firewall must be turned off. If you made configuration changes in programs Norton probably spotted this. You will be asked when new programs want online access, you should know the programs before allowing this. This should be well explained in the Norton firewall tutorial or Help.

The Adaware stuff appears to be in Quarantine, all programs generally have a quarantine area. Open Ad-aware then open the quarantine list. Delete everything in there. If you review the tutorials for the programs I provided, this information is there.

Follow the instruction in the following link to give you clean System Restore files:

Java…This is the first time I have had an issues with updating Java. Since it is not "malware" as I said, I rarely do more than tell the member to update for safety. You only have one Java program, if you can't update to the newest version, I would suggest trying to download over it or uninstall and download it again. Let me know how it goes. I personally have updated in one of my computer with no issues. I'll look around for a Java forum where you may be able to get some help. Here are two links I located.

Hi Phil,

Sorry to be ages getting back to you, i didnt realise the post went over more than one page….

The full name of the file that was looking for permission to access the net was :

WUWMSG.EXE-0E79C8B2

It is correct as i copied the file name straight off the file and pasted it in here. I also tried to do a google on it, but it found nothing for me too……Saying that, i didnt realise all the numbers were in the name till just now, so i'll try again in a minute……

I'll need to go back now and have a look what else i still have to do, and i'll get back to you a.s.a.p.

Thanks Phil.
Stewart, if you copied it off the file, then you know the Path of the file.

It is correct as i copied the file name straight off the file and pasted it in here..

Since you know the path of the file, use these online scans to find out if it is bad or good (Goggle not being able to ID is a clue)

I would also like you to RIGHT click the file and choose properties, then give me as much information as you find under all tabs.

Thanks…Phil
Hi Phil,

Have now re-installed Java.

Have no idea what the wuwmsg.exe file is for/from. Its a stuffit encoded file, located in C:\windows\prefetch, size is 16.8kb, created 29th october. Its a read only file for archiving. File name WUWMSG.EXE-0E79C8B2, And thats all the info there is on it Phil.

I have too much noise going on to think if i've missed anything. Do you think i should go for the system restore now?

Cheers Phil
Here is what I want you to do. Right click on Start, then click on Explore. Locate the C:\Windows\Prefetch\ folder and delete everything in it (not the folder). That file will go with the rest. If you can't delete anything in there, then I want you to do it in safe mode: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial61.html Make very sure that wuwmsg.exe file is deleted. Now delete everything in your Recycle Bin. Open the bin and make sure it is empty. Now search for wuwmsg.exe to be positive it is no longer on your computer. Here is some information about Prefetch for you. http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_…refetch-XP.html

Now do this: MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR SYSTEM RESTORE1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Now run Spybot and Ad-aware with them configured like it says in this link: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php

Make sure you have this program: Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ and that you read this tutorial: Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do.

Now restart your computer and enjoy it. Be careful, it's a cyber jungle out that. :wavey:

Thanks…Phil
