I keep getting a message from my AV client that Apropos.C is on my system. I have tried everything I can think of but I can't seem to get rid of it. Symantec's site gives some methods of getting rid of it but the problem is it creates random file names so I can't seem to find them. The two files that keep popping up are LFBATT.EXE and CHAMODEM.EXE but neither of those files can be found on my computer (with system files not being hidden). I'd appreciate any assistance anyone can give.

This is really starting to get to me. Now my CPU usage is jumping up to 100% about every other second for no apparent reason. No processes are taking an extraordinary amount of memory that I can see. I wonder if I boot into SimplyMEPIS (Linux) if I can find those two files and delete them? But I'm not sure where they are in the registry so I don't know if they'd come back….
Sorry I'm so impatient but I'm very intolerant of computer problems. As Steve Gibson says, It's MY computer!

Anyway, I think I discovered at least part of my problem and it was a rootkit. I was continually getting messages in AV client that two files were Apropos.C. Those two files were:
C:\Program Files\AHEJAVA\LFBBATT.EXE
C:\Windows\System32\CHAMODEM.EXE

The problem is that I couldn't find either of those files on my computer or in my registry. And the Ahejava folder didn't exist either (and I had it set to disply all files and folders including system files).

Finally I decided to try something else. I booted to a live version of Windows using BartPE and browsed my hard drive and viola! there they were. I deleted the entire Ahejava folder because it had some cache files and WinGenerics.dll in there in addition to LFBBATT.exe. I also deleted the CHAMODEM.exe file from my System32 folder.

Then I booted back to normal Windows and deleted my system restore points and all temp/cache files and turned off a couple unneccessary services. It's been about 30 minutes and so far so good. My only concern is I think there are some registry files but I hope they are just orphaned and won't cause any harm. I did run RootkitRevealer again with no real changes. Now I just wait and see. Here are my new Hijackthis and RootkitRevealer logs just in case:

Hello allenkt, welcome to the TC.

Slow down and tell me how your PC is running right now.

are you in: Korea, Republic Of - Ktrc
It actually seems to be running normally again. It's been about 35 minutes since I deleted those files and as of yet haven't had any messages pop up and my CPU useage is back to normal. Before that I was getting messages from my AV client about Apropos.C at the rate of about one every other minute or so.
are you in: Korea, Republic Of - Ktrc

Is this your ISP?

Lets get rid of anything that might be hidding in the restore area.

Note: This will remove all previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn it back on.

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Remove the Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Next:

Backup your Registry…
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run…)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.

Let me know how it's going and post a new HJT log.
Ok, RegSeeker ran 3 or 4 times and then I rebooted. The only problem I notice after the reboot is that I get an error message from WS_FTP saying it was not installed correctly. But that's not a huge issue since I can just reinstall it if necessary. Here is the latest Hijackthis log:

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
Thanks for the help. I have Internet Explorer pretty well locked down now as I've disabled active x, java, scripting, etc…. Then instead of adding sites to my restricted zone, I've added a few sites to my trusted zone because I use Firefox as my default browser now. There a few sites that don't run correctly in Firefox and I use IE for those sites. I'm also using both a hardware and software firewall (my router and Sygate) and have disabled the UPnP service on my computer. But unfortunately I didn't start using all that until I picked up a nasty spyware program a few weeks ago. And I think that was the rootkit that I was finally able to get rid of today :) Thanks again for your help.
