Here is the HijackThis log of a system that I can't seem to recover. Spyware Doctor, SpyBot, Spyware Guard, Ewido, Spyware Blocker, SpyBot and Norton Antivirus couldn't fix it. It now starts to load user values at startup and then shuts itself down.

This was run in safe mode which is the only information I can provide to start. There are many people who use this computer and the spyware/adware protection may have been added too late.

Help,

Jon
Thanks for sending your information. We are sorry for the delay in responding. The volunteers here are swamped, and unfortunately, not all logs get answered as quickly as we'd like. If you still need help with your problem, please reply to this message with a new HijackThis log. I will be notified automatically when you reply. wng
HijackThis log would be the same, have not been able to run machine other than in Safe Mode. In regular startup it starts to load and then shuts itself off. I believe I may have a corrupted program. I followed Microsofts suggestion to check on unsigned drivers. Used suggested utility to find drivers, moved them from Windows/system32/drivers to temp folder. Same errors occured. Replaced them into drivers folder. Next step they suggest is unloading all startup program from startup menu and registry entries. Have not had time to try that yet. Where to? Jon
do you recognize this?
O4 - Global Startup: TimeWolf 3.0 System Monitor.lnk = C:\LoneWolf\TimeWolf3\SysMon\TCSCN32.EXE

You should move HijackThis from here:
C:\DOCUME~1\TECHNI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe

and unzip it too. If you have cleared out your temp files,
HijackThis Download Site

Once it is downloaded, extract the zip file to c:\hjt and navigate to the c:\hjt folder.
DO NOT FORGETto unzip the folder and do not leave hijackthis in a temp folder.

You can fix these with Hijackthis, but it's not the root of your problem

Have you installed any new software lately? As a worst case scenario, it could be a rootkit screwing up your computer, but we'll cross that bridge once other options are ruled out.
Are you geting any error messages?

wng
The TimeWolf global startup is the network monitor for our time clocking for payroll and is present on all the other computers on the network without problems. The yahoo toolbars are relatively new. We just updated our proprietary Pint of Sale/data system software but again, no other stations are having issues. The different thing about this system is that it links with a external computer by serial port to transfer data into our database program. That also has not been an issue. I can only run this insafe mode. Should I remove the Yahoo toolbars first? HijackThis has been moved from the temporary folder. Previous error messages included shutdown supposedly caused by a device driver. Have been unable to determine which one. As I mentioned I checked for unsigned device drivers, moved them to a temporary folder and still have the same shutdown issues. Jon
The yahoo toolbar is not causing the problem, Yahoo uses some bad clickthoroughs, and this redirect (http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customize/…/search/ie.html) can have all kinds of unwanted effects. Do me a favor: go to start->run->devmgmt.msc maximize that window and take a screenshot for me. Then post it here. wng
Still only able to run in Safe mode, can't print, but I can describe what came up in devmgmt.msc.

Yellow exclamation under batteries, APC powerchute software for UPS. Have received notice when trying to start in normal mode that hibernation mode is not enabled on this computer. In Safe mode no explanation of yellow exclamation mark is available. Can't uninstall in safe mode. Relatively recent update, also used on other computers, not causing problems there.

Also under video display yellow question mark, no driver for VGA controller, my NVIDIA video card tried to update and the first step was to uninstall the old driver. New software to install driver has error and does not finish install. Rollback of driver not possible. Don't know if software glitch in new program or effect of system problem. Have tried downloading again from NVIDIA site, same result. No driver installed for display now.

Now where?

Jon
I have a hunch that your UPS backup is causing some problems. If it's ok with you, I'd like to have you disable the service, and see if that helps. Go to start->run->services.msc find this: APC UPS Service double click it. Hit the stop button. THen change the startup type from automatic to disabled. Now try restarting your computer in normal mode. Can you at least get into windows now?
Please print out this instructions as you should have all open windows and programs closed when running the scan.

Step 1.
==========

- Please download F-Secure's trial Blacklight from here
- Print out the help page for guidance. It will be found here
- Click the "I Accept" button at the the license agreement
- Click the "Download" button to start the download
- Save it to your Desktop

Step 2.
==========

- Double-click the blbeta.exe file on your Desktop
- Select the "I Accept the agreement" at the license agreement, then click "Next"
- Make sure "Scan through Windows Explorer (Recommended)" is selected\checked
- Make sure all open programs and windows are closed (including this IE window) before clicking the "Scan" button
- Click "Scan
- When the animated graphics, in the bottom right-hand corner, disappears, click "Next"
- A text log file will appear on your Desktop when the scan is complete. It will start with fsbl-xxxxxx.txt (ie: fsbl-20051017165931.log)
- Paste the contents of that log back here.

wng
Unfortunately, I can't run it in safe mode. Still unable to start in normal mode. This computer is really a very vanilla machine on our system and the option exists to wipe the hard drive and start over with a fresh windows XP install. I have never done that with XP (98, 95, 3.1, DOS yes). Do you think it's starting to look easier to go that route? Jon
I decided to proceed with wiping the hard drive and reloading XP. Unable to do so, still having random shut downs after completely reformating hard drive and starting over with XP disk. Evidently some sort of intermittent hardware issue. Have never received memory error messages, will try contacting vendor but chip/onboard problem now seems most likely. Thank you for your efforts.
