My XP has begun acting funning the last few days. This seems to have happened after I loaded a program to listen to streaming radio and a free program to record the stream (my mistake, I know).

My log file is below, if there are any other questions I can answer I will. Thanks for the assistance.

Hello Topdoggg, :D

Welcome to Tom Coyote, sorry about the delay but we have been swamped with logs, if you have not resolved your issue and still need my assistance, I need you to do two things.

DO THIS FIRST
Your HIJACKTHIS program is current, but it is very important that it resides in its own folder.
We will use Hijackthis (HJT) to make changes to your system and HJT will make backups of those changes,
If HJT is not in its own folder, those backups could be lost.

Easy to fix,
* just go to MY COMPUTER > YOUR C:\ DRIVE and create a new folder and name it HIJACKTHIS .
* Now scroll to where you have HJT currently, right click on the HJT icon and select CUT .
* Now open the new folder you just created and right click within that folder and select PASTE .
* Now HJT should reside in C:\HIJACKTHIS\HIJACKTHIS.EXE

I need you to post a new log please, run HJT Scan and Save a log file, when the log opens in Notepad…Go to Edit> Select All….Edit> Copy and paste the log into this thread. I can't read the log the way you posted it.

Ken
THanks Ken,

No worries on any delay, I just really apprciate any help I can get. I've done what you suggested and the new log is below. Something I did do since my first post was run the log file through the anlayzer at http://www.hijackthis.de/ and based on that removed the most obvious ones that they analyzer tagged as nasty. I really hope that didn't mess anything up (the 'puter seems to be working a bit better).

Anyhow, here is the new log file.

Thanks again. Jim

Good Morning Jim, :D

Your log looks fairly clean, lets run HJT Scan Only, close all open windows and your browser and click on Fix Checked

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Just keep in mind whatever you removed with HJT on your own, you got off easy this time but removing the wrong entries can make your system inoperable.

To be on the safe side, there is an excellent program for syware removal that seems to pick up things that may be hidden and also reminants of infections that may still linger, they offer a 14 day free trial, so lets run that program.

Spy Sweeper Free Trial
* Install the program
* Check for Updates
* Click on Scan and let it remove anything it finds.
* You will have an option to save a report.
* Save the report to somewhere you can find it.

Download Hoster

* Unzip Hoster.zip to your Desktop
* Open Hoster.exe.
* Close all Open Windows.
* Then click on Restore Original Hosts
* Close program when complete.

Open up Spybot Search and Destroy
Make sure you have the current version 1.4, if not you can use the links in my signature to download the new version.

* Check for updates

Post a new HJT log along the the Spy Sweeper Report.
Thanks again Ken for all of your help. Point taken on my earlier use of that HJT analyzer. I could have screwed up my system big time.

My new HJT Log is below and following that the Spy Sweeper log. I'm not sure if it means anything, but I have not been able to update Spybot S&D prior to running everything that I ran today at your request. Now it updates just fine. Seems funny.

Also, I did notice that both Eudora and Outlook would not load on initial boot or reboot. I had to shut down completely and then they both started acting normally. I'll have to see how they behave now that I've done all this.

Anyway, enough babbling. Here are the logs and thanks again so much for all your help.

Jim

Good Morning Jim, :D

This line in the Spysweeper report shows a Rootkit infection, this is a bad program that loads before your operating system is loaded so it goes undetected. It says in the Spysweeper report that it is removed on reboot, but we have to make sure.

12:38 PM: apropos is in use < This is the infection. It will be removed on reboot.

I need you to run Spysweeper and remove anything it finds, reboot, run Spysweeper again removing anything it finds and then save the report and paste it into this thread along with a new HJT log. Rebooting after running Spysweeper the first time is the key.

If that infection is still present, there is a tool that will remove it.
Hi Ken,

I've run both sweeps and am posting the new logs below. Thanks again for all the help.

Jim

Jim,

Part or all of that infection is still present..

Run HJT> Misc Tools> Uninstall Manager. Click on Save List and post the list in this thread please.

Jim, I can't read your HJT log the way you are pasting it, make sure that you are running HJT Scan and Save a Log File , do the Edit/ Select All….Edit Copy and Paste it into this thread. You have an option to preview the post before you Add Reply, look at it and if it is still messed up, run HJT again and before you copy it, go to Format and turn off Word Wrap.

So paste the log from the uninstall Manager and a new HJT log.
Hi Ken,

Sorry for the confusion with the HJT logs. I have been using edit > select all > copy and paste, so I was surprised to see that not working properly. I'll be sure to check more closely this time.

My unsubscribe log and new HJT log at below.

Thanks again, :)

Jim

Hello Jim

Thanks for pasting new log, the other one you sent was hard to read as the entries weren't lining up correctly. :thumbup:

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix © Swandog46 from here:
Aproposfix

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

Then run Spysweeper again and post a new report and lets see if it got it all.

Ken :D
Hi Ken,

Everything has been done as requested. The new HJT log, the aproposefix log and the Spysweeper logs follow.

Question. Are you a volunteer here? How many of you are there working these forums? I can't tell you how much help you've been.

Jim

Hi Jim,

Yes we are all volunteers here at Tom Coyote as are many of our sister sites. The support you get are from people all over the world who are banded together to fight this malware crapola. We all have families and do this whenever we get some free time, so if you don't get a quick response, I may be out cutting my lawn or something. :D Adds are one thing, but some of this stuff downright steals information from your computer as far as passwords, bank account numbers if you bank online and the list goes on. There are some infections going around that are impossible to clean, a format and clean install of windows is what has to be done…Fortunately we don't have to go this route on your system So you really have to be careful where you go and what you download.

I need some time to digest all your reports, your log looks clean and the Aprosos Rootkit program looks like it got rid of it but why spysweeper found some traces of it and quarentined it, I will have to look into. I will be back today with some answers and at that point I have some free programs and tips for you to install and follow that will help keep you more secure.
Jim,

I found a program that will reveal if the Rootkit is still present.

You can download F-Secure Blacklight You can download it to your desktop. No installation, just accept the agreement and run the scan. I don't like to have someone run a program before I have tried it, so I ran it on my system, it was painless and took less than 5 minutes.

Let me know if it found anything and removed it.

Post a new HJT log after the scan and let me see if anything changed.
Hi Ken,

Hope your day is going well. Blacklight didn't find anything during its scan. I've attached a new HJT log below. I'm hoping you find nada.

Thanks again,

Jim

Jim,

Your log is clean, but go back a few posts and run the AprososFix again, besure to run it in Safemode, it will tell you that it found nothing or it may remove parts it missed last time.

Jim, how is your PC running, are you experiencing any pop ups that are out of control, or does everything appear normal?

Post a new HJT log please along with the log of Aprosos.

Ken :D
