Hello Melissa. In response to your request, this is what I see in this leg.
1) C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe installed bundled with other aol junk, most folks don't even know they have it. At the very least a resource waster, I suggest you uninstall it. You can also turn it of in MSConfig. here is some information:
http://castlecops.com/startuplist-4102.html

2) C:\DOCUME~1\Melissa\LOCALS~1\Temp\Temporary Directory 1 for hijackthis.zip\HijackThis.exe running from a .zip file in a temporary directory is very unsafe. You should have received this warning: http://russelltexas.com/malware/images/unsafefolder.gif I suggest you put it here: C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe. If you need more instruction use these: http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm

3) Once your HJT is properly places so backups will be available if needed, you may do this:

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
clutter
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
clutter

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe
(if you uninstalled Viewpoint as suggested, remove this line)

O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
(optional, if you did not set the restriction, you may remove it)

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.bankofamerica.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.earthlink.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://www.freewebs.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://disturbingequines.tripod.com
O15 - Trusted IP range: http://66.98.220.3
(suggested, if you did not set these, I would remove them. Make sure you know them all, that is a lot of access to your computer)

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

If you uninstalled Viewpoint, navigate to here: C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\ <<< folder and make sure that folder is gone.

Since you had no "malware" Here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:
http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957
http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14

Let me know if there is anything else you need. Safe surfing.

Thanks…pskelley

One last question: I uninstalled Viewpoint Manager but the folder is still there. Is it safe to trash it? One last comment: Thanks again for taking the time to review my HJT log, and for the links to additional websites. Now I have the tools I need to make my PC more secure.
You must have missed this in my instructions:

If you uninstalled Viewpoint, navigate to here: C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\ <<< folder and make sure that folder is gone.

Go ahead and post a new log when you are done so I can take a last look. Do not be afraid to as me questions :) I will do my very best to give you answers.

Thanks…Phil
I deleted the Viewpoint folder and ran a new scan. Here's the log. You'll notice that I left two Trusted Zones in place. This is because these sites won't work unless they're set as Trusted Zones.

I deleted the Viewpoint folder and ran a new scan. Here's the log. You'll notice that I left two Trusted Zones in place. This is because these sites won't work unless they're set as Trusted Zones.

Humm…I did give you the option to leave them all if you wanted. I never allow anything in the TZ, that bypasses much of your security. Malware writers use this a lot because few folks know it is happening and they have access to basically your whole computer. You may need them there but I doubt it. Try this: Internet Explorer > Tools > Options > Security > Trusted Sites > Sites > "Add the Web site to the zone" You can choose to override for specific websites, and you can add and remove them when you wish. You can do it with cookies too, like this:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/using/…acy/config.mspx
You log looks fine and if you are having no issues, you are good to go.

Safe surfing…Phil :wavey:
Thanks for the info about trusted sites. I'll make the changes as you suggested. I've been scrupulous about using a firewall and AV protection, and keeping all software updated. I run AdAware and Spybot at the end of the day, every day. This week I added a-squared and HJT, and I'm going to review the suggestions on the sites you mentioned. My next project is to switch from IE to Firefox. I really appreciate the time you've taken to review my logs and make suggestions to increase security on my PC. Thanks again.
You are doing a good job, that's why you had no infections. You can only put so much stuff on the computer until you overkill. Read what the experts have to say. If you switch to Firefox, do it becuase you want to…it is a good browser also. IE will still need to be maintained. Firefox is only safer that IE now because malware writers can't make the $$ exploiting it they can IE. As more and more folks start using it, then they will start looking at it for $$ and already have. I personally run McAfee, XPSp2 Firewall and these free programs that you will see mentioned time and again in those links:
Spybot

Ad-aware

SpywareGuard:

IE-Spyad

All are freeware and tutorials are included. Here is the Firefox link: http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ I run them both…hard to teach an old dog a new trick… :wavey:
