Hi Klutek,
I followed your instructions & unchecked everything thatwas left under services & startup tab.rebooted.
both green & red lines maxing at 100% when unpacking rar files.
next
no errors seem to be a problem.
Waiting for further instructions.
Thanks very much for your help. Keep it coming
Ken.
Any idea what CPU usage packing and unpacking rar files used in the past on your machinet?
That's a fairly computational and disk intensive operation.
I do not have a rar archiver on my system, so I made a big zip file and unpacked it. During both zipping and unzipping operations my CPU usage was in the 60% range for both the green and red lines. That's on a 3.2 GHZ P4. So i would expect a rar unpacking to use a lot of CPU cycles also.
What sort of CPU usage do you see when running more ordinary tasks like IE, word? Are they causing the CPU to max out also?
Hi
Yes i checked by opening word and excel on mine several times - it jumps to about 70-80% total cpu usage though winword only shows 25-30% for a couple seconds then back to my baseline usage of 5-10%. Opening smaller programs like notepad, freecell, or winzip show a second or two spike to 20-30% before dropping back to the 5-6% range.
Starting spybot s&d shows about a 3 second spike to 50-60% then a drop back to the baseline. Then if I start a check for problems total usage goes up to a steady 55% with a good gap between the green and red lines.
So short spikes are to be expected when starting a program. I would only be worried if you are showing high cpu usage that does not drop back.
Hi Klutek,
From what you saying, I gather my p4 2.66 processor is working normally. Running Spybot shows it at 100% the whole time, with a large gap between the green & red lines. NotePad uses about the same as your machine.I may be expecting too much from my machine.
I want to say Thank You for all your time & help with this problem. You guys are doing a great service. It means alot to have a place to go when I have a problem, or suspected problem .
Thank You very much. Ken.
