Thanks for your help. Just ran this and got this logfile. Winsupdater is the virus I'm fighting but do believe there are more or I haven't fully removed this one.

Hello tenhighduck, Welcome to the forum.


This is what I suggest you do.



Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.



Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.


Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.4 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.06 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

1. Launch Ad-Aware SE and run the WebUpdate feature. (Click on the Globe icon > Click connect > Click OK > Click Finish.)
2. Set up the Configurations as follows:
– Click the Gear wheel at the top of the Ad-Aware window
– Click General > Safety & Settings: Check (Green) all three.
– Click Tweak > Cleaning Engine > UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion".
3. Click "Proceed"
4. Click "Scan Now"
5. Deselect "Search for negligible risk entries" as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
6. Select "Search for low-risk threats"
7. Run the scanner using the Full Scan (Perform full system scan) mode.
8. When the scan has completed, select Next.
9. In the Scanning Results window, select the "Scan Summary" tab.
10. Check the box next to each "target family" you wish to remove.
11. Click next > Click OK.



Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Thanks, I have done all that you said and nothing has been found. I have worked pretty hard on extracting and cleaning. I have dumped my current firewall and virus protection (Kerio and Avast) and have installed and configured the McAffee security center. McAffee scans the hard drive and comes up empty. Overall the PC is working as designed with no visual or performance problems. Except, I still can't edit the registry thru REGEDIT and still cannot launch a DOS window. Can you help me fix these problems? Thank you. Dan

Note: I found that if I rename regedit.exe to regedit2.com then I get into the registry. Also, if I rename cmd.exe to cmd2.com then that works also.

try the Group policy editor
click Start> Run type in gpedit.msc

User Config\Admin Templates\System\Prevent Access To registry Editing Tools
= "Not Configured"

I ran it and it looks a little different than you explained. The entry is "disable registry editing tools" = not configured. I think this is what your looking for. No?

Found the following: regedit.exe c:\winnt regedit.exe c:\winnt\$ntservicepackuninstall$ regedit.chm c:\winnt\help regedit.hlp c:\winnt\help regedit.exe c:\winnt\servicepackfiles\i386 regedit.com c:\winnt\system32 (Note: this is a hidden file) regedit.exe c:\winnt\system32\dllcache If I run regedit.exe then I get into the registry editor. Sounds like regedit.com is the culprit?

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.


Open c:\winnt\system32\regedit.com <–Right Click on file and Rename to regedit.old

Open c:\winnt\system32\dllcache Copy regedit.exe to c:\winnt\system32\


Test and see if it works OK. If so:

Open c:\winnt\system32\regedit.old <–Delete File.

I suggest you do this:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"


Open C:\WINNT\system32\winlog.exe <–Delete this file.

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Did as you said except for deleting the file WINLOG.EXE. Can't find this file anywhere on the computer. I have admin rights and have made sure that I see all hidden and system files. Can't remember but I may have deleted it a while ago because from what I found it is not a wanted file. The PC is running as I would expect it to run. It does not crash or run slow. It could run faster but I feel I would have to reformat and re-install the OS which I don't want to do right now. Here is the latest log file.
