Excessive HD activity after infection removal

Excessive HD activity currently at startup, shutdown, & when loading programs, especially MSN browser (very bad when loading MSN e-mail list). Prior infection (not found by PC-cillin, AdAware, or spybot) caused CONSTANT HD activity. When 2 suspect processes (Task manager) were stopped they reappeared. With help from Trend Micro support traced with Process Explorer and removed manually from registry.

Now, problem (excessive but not continuous) continues as described above. Have run Defrag (defrag not needed), scandisk (OK), turned of indexing, & removed startup items. None of this seemed to help.

Looking to solve problem without reload of XP - this time with SP2.

Thanks in advance for you help,

Hello pmhstar, welcome to the forum.

I don't see anything bad in your log, but lets see if we can fing anything

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then please run Ewido, click on the Scanner run a full scan and let it clean everything it finds. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.
Thanks LDTate

Completed as requested - see following report logs.

Spyware likely acquired since last clean with AdAware and spybot.

Apparently ewido also found virus.

System problem with HDisk does not appear to have changed.

FYI - after MSN runs for a while according to Windows Task Manager msn.exe has performed >750M I/O Read Bytes and System has 380M I/O Read Bytes. This seems to correlate somewhat with the excess activity when running MSN but doesn't explain other excessive HD activity.

Any other ideas (IDE or HDisk drivers?) or should I wipe it clean and start from scratch (ugh!)?

pmhstar

I suggest you do this:

Run hijackthis. Hit None of the above, Click Do a System Scan Only. Put a Check in the box on the left side on these:

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [soundcontrl] soundcontrl.exe

ALL 016's. They'll come back if needed,

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart in Safe Mode:
Restart your computer.

Press F8 after the Power-On Self Test (POST) is done. If the Windows Advanced Options Menu does not appear, try restarting and then pressing F8 several times after the POST screen.
Choose the Safe Mode option from the Windows Advanced Options Menu then press Enter.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Search for and delete these files if listed:
soundcontrl.exe

Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.

Do this also if these Temp Folders are part of your OS.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\(EVERY LISTED USER)\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thanks LDTate

Completed as requested - see following report log.

FYI - did not find additional soundcontrl.exe in C: search. Also if I did a "select all" for a folder there was not a subsequent DELETE option in Edit. So I simply selected the folder and deleted.

FYI - it seems slightly better but there still is a lot of HDisk churning during startup, program loads, and when getting e-mail with MSN premium browser.

I also rechecked the TEMP folders after rebooting. The following files appeared in the logged in user's folder:

Install_MSN_Messenger_DL.exe 7,193Kb 6/24/05
~DF77B1.tmp 16Kb 10/21/05
msncorr.log 0Kb 10/21/05

I also noted a lot of files in the user's Temporary Internet Files folder (more than cookies). I thought these files would be gone when I implemented "Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK."

Did I screw this up?

FYI - I have also done a registry scan with TweakNow RegCleaner. It found about 30 entries it could not determine "status" for - virtually all are dll files (e.g., seal.dll, mailui.dll, msnmetal.dll). It also found 3 it claimed were "safe to delete". These were related to npjava130_02.dll, ieatgpc.dll and popcaploader.dll.

Thanks for you help.

Backup your Registry…
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run…)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.
Thanks LDTate I have done the regedit backup (about 63Mb) and downloaded and run regseeker. RegSeeker has found 1077 items. I have not yet deleted anything. Quite frankly I'm afraid of doing so many deletes. Some are red, others green. What gives with the colors - red might crash the system or applications???? Is there some information that I can review to help decided which to delete and which to save (at least initially)? Example reds Unused "open with"entry extension not used invalid ActiveX/COM entry (CLSID) filetype not used invalid application path Example greens File or path does not exist THERE ARE A LOT OF THESE obsolete Start Menu item obsolete entry For example as part of this troubleshooting effort I loaded RegCleaner last week. Under HKEY_LOCALMACHINE there is a GREEN entry (file or path does not exist) for: SOFTWARE\Microsoft\windows\curentversion\uninstall\tweaknow regcleaner standard_is1 also shows an "ab" icon with "Display Icon" and then C:\Program Files\TweakNow RegCleaner Std\compil32.exe I checked and there is not such exe file but there is an unins000.exe Thanks so much for your continued help. pmhstar

Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete.

Those should all be safe to delete.

You can look here if you want:
http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm
Thanks LDTate I deleted roughly 1/3 of the "File or path does not exist" items with RegSeeker after checking the backup box. Then rebooted and tried to open MSN to see if it was better. Unfortunately, MSN didn't fully run and said there was a file type for e-mail that was not associated with a program. I closed MSN opened REgSeeker, double clicked on the saved reg file and OKed putting it back into the registry. Rebooted and loaded MSN. Now it seems to be taking even longer to bring up the e-mail and finally MSN crashed. I've restarted and the MSN is functional but the HDisk is running virtually constantly (e.g., the MSN I/O Read Bytes is at 1,000 Mb after 10 - 20 minutes and still climbing. Other software seems to be working OK but even with no applications running the HDisk periodic saves (every 5 seconds or so) seem to be more than a very short burst (like on our other Dell laptop). Should I go back and reload/restore regedit backup? How do I do that? Bottom line - I'm afraid to remove everything identified by RegSeeker. After a bit of Googling it appears the world is divided into those that think you can delete everyting that RegSeeker finds and others that are either very skeptical or have had problems after deletions. Given my negative experience with deleting 30 or so entries, I seem to be stuck. I really don't want to crash the system or loose important data (yes I will be backing up). Do you think cleaning up the registry will improve performance, particularly for MSN? Any suggestions on doing this in some progressive manner? Do you think I should consider uninstalling MSN, getting their help to cleanup associated registry entries, and then reloading? Thanks again for the help - don't you ever get tired and frustrated helping us - I've wasted hours/days on this before even asking for your help. pmhstar

Do you think cleaning up the registry will improve performance, particularly for MSN?
Any suggestions on doing this in some progressive manner?

Yes, I'd do the regseeker fies and re-install MSN

Do you think I should consider uninstalling MSN, getting their help to cleanup associated registry entries, and then reloading?

Yes.

Thanks again for the help - don't you ever get tired and frustrated helping us - I've wasted hours/days on this before even asking for your help.

I never get tired of fighting the scumbags that try to steel information and load our computers with advertisments and other junk we don't want :D

Thanks LDTate I have had to postpone this cleanup effort since my 94 year old mother (in PA) has fallen and is in the hospital. I'm in MA and there has been a lot of calling and discussion with caregivers and doctors. I did remove and reinstall MSN (using minimum size) and it did not seemed to help. Thanks for your help - please don't delete the posting - I should be back in the near future to continue. pmhstar
