Please Help -- MorwillSearch.com and Winfixer overtaking my computer

5 min read

Somehow, I get these Winfixer pop ups every hour or so now that will try to download the program onto your computer even after declining. Sometimes they will close the current Internet Explorer window too. Also, last night I began having problems with search engines like Google and Yahoo…everytime I clicked a link, I was taken to MorwillSearch.com. The only way I've found to counter it is opening the link in a new window (which opens the Morwill search thing) and then clicking the link in the current window. It's been so incredibly frustrating. Anyway, I've recently run McAfee, Spybot, and Ad-aware….here is my log file.

One last thing, I have noticed programs on C: drive like WinZephyr, PCFriendly, and SSH Communications Security that I have never noticed before.

Run Hijack This!

Click the "Open the Misc Tools section" button.

Click the "Open process manager" button.

Check the "Show DLLs" box (upper right).

Click on each item in the upper window, then look in the lower window.

Check to see which processes are using these DLL's:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvsp.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnom.dll

Post back letting me know all processes using those DLL's.

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.

l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing .

This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, Notepad will open with a log. Copy/paste the contents of that log into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!
Thanks for the response.

The processes using pmnom.dll are as follows:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogin.exe

The processes using awvsp.dll are as follows:
C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe

When I ran that l2mfix program, I got an error message but hit ignore twice and the log file finally popped up….so I'm not sure if that affected anything.

    O2 - BHO: Bho - {AD69377B-C17B-4018-BEA3-236EEBCE1037} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\xvejryto.dll

After the reboot, delete these files if they still exist:

C:\WINDOWS\System32\psvwa.ini2
C:\WINDOWS\System32\psvwa.bak2
C:\WINDOWS\System32\psvwa.bak1
C:\WINDOWS\System32\psvwa.tmp
C:\WINDOWS\System32\psvwa.ini
C:\WINDOWS\System32\monmp.ini
C:\WINDOWS\System32\vtuvu.dll

They will be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these files.
I have tried to start my computer in safe mode, but after hitting F8 and entering my login information, I get a black screen with "safe mode" in each corner, but no icons, toolbars, or start menu…just a blank screen. My laptop is a university leased one, so I'm not sure if maybe they tried to make it "dummy proof" by making Safe Mode inaccessible? I'm not quite sure what to do…I've used safe mode before on other computers but have never had this happen. EDIT: I also forgot to mention that for a brief period (less than a second) a window pops up that says "You are now running in safe mode" and gives you the option 'yes' or 'no', but it disappears so quickly that I never have time to read it or even click anything. Then I'm left sitting with a blank screen and nothing to do but restart.
Safe Mode Problem Workaround

After booting in "safe mode", push these three keys at the same time:

The task manager appears on the screen.

Click on the Applications tab, then click New task.

Then click on Browse.

"Browse" your system to the KillVundo.bat file in the VundoFix folder, then click OK.
Everything went flawlessly except for one thing…when I went to fix the item O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {6DD0BC06-4719-4BA3-BEBC-FBAE6A448152} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\awvsp.dll, it was not listed. The other four items were and I fixed those.
