Hope I am doing everything ok. I am a female and not overly computer savvy but hopefully know enough to get this right.

Here are the results of the log I just did.

I can't remember all the problems I've been having, have been putting it off for awhile, but one thing is that I can't dowload the updates for Windows, and it take a long time to open my browser when starting up, and also takes a long time to shut down. Also if shut down unexpectedly I get some error about cpd.exe failing or something because the system is shutting down.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Hello crimson007, Welcome to the forum.

This is what I suggest you do.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.4 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.06 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

1. Launch Ad-Aware SE and run the WebUpdate feature. (Click on the Globe icon > Click connect > Click OK > Click Finish.)
2. Set up the Configurations as follows:
– Click the Gear wheel at the top of the Ad-Aware window
– Click General > Safety & Settings: Check (Green) all three.
– Click Tweak > Cleaning Engine > UNcheck "Always try to unload modules before deletion".
3. Click "Proceed"
4. Click "Scan Now"
5. Deselect "Search for negligible risk entries" as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.
6. Select "Search for low-risk threats"
7. Run the scanner using the Full Scan (Perform full system scan) mode.
8. When the scan has completed, select Next.
9. In the Scanning Results window, select the "Scan Summary" tab.
10. Check the box next to each "target family" you wish to remove.
11. Click next > Click OK.

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thanks, did all you said… I used house call and it found one item which I deleted, Etrust also found one item which was also deleted. I tried to use the Panda one, and it found some things, but it didn't seem like there was an option to do anything about them, so I wond up skipping that one…it was alte so maybe I missed something there…
Ran Spybot and Ad-Aware… Spybot found and removed all but 2 things, and said they were still in use (memory) and could be fixed after a restart, so I allowed it to run on the next restart and rebooted. When it ran this second time it did not find anything.
Ad Aware fixed mulitple things also.

It still is giving the message "cpd.exe DLL initialization failed, application failed to initialize b/c the windows station is shutting down" when I am shutting down to reboot. Not sure if that is a problem or not, I just don't thin it was always there…

Computer is not as slow, but still slower than it used to be. I haven't tried to install the windows updates, yet, wanted to post the log first…
Here it is:

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Was on a few weeks ago trying to fix this computer when I got called out of state due to the passing of a family member. While gone my dh was using the computer, so I basically need to start all over.
Here is the log I ran tonight. Sorry for the delay, I just returned this week and have been catching up on everything here that I missed while away.

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
Ok, before I do this, I just wanted to say that it is actually not running very good. Today while on Mozilla it was scrolling past everything not letting me click on anything. Restarted and same thing, it would jump from one thing to another and not let me click on anything or close things. Finally, it settled down somehow and I was able to run some scans. No viruses showed up, removed some spyware. McAfee did not seem to run right either. I just wanted to make sure you know that I was not able to complete all the previous steps as I said I was called out of state, and my dh used the computer while I was gone, and did not restart in safe mode etc, from that point on. If you think everything still is ok, and I don't need to do anything else I will proceed as you instructed above, just wanted to be sure first. Thanks!
wanted to also add that I have had problems now with going to start mozilla and it opens a window with the profiles and when I click on the only one there, "default" it says it can't be opened b/c it is already in use. Do I have a hacker problem now also??? Please advise. I can do another log if you need me to, I will wait to hear back. Thanks
Try to run this in Safe Mode, disconnect your connection to the internet.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Then please run Ewido, click on the Scanner run a full scan and let it clean everything it finds. Save the logfile from the scan.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.
Uh oh..here is where I get in trouble and show my absolute compter ineptness…. I tried to restart in safe mode several times. (I did download and install and update the ewido) It did not seem to want to restart in safe mode…I tried several times, and a few times it would have a white status type bar at the bottom and it would load all the way and then freeze, another time it went to safe mode then select op system to start, which I clicked then it started loading/scrolling a bunch of files…something like multi(0)disk… and after a page or so full it would cmopletely freeze. I waited awhile both times, but it definitely seemed to freeze up. Then I would press the reset button to try again, and have the same type of things happen. So, now I restarted just normally to post here. :( I know I"m probably screwing something up big time, but not sure what…sorry…can you tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks
Lets see if this helps.

You need to update both Windows XP and Internet Explorere as they are both well behind in updates. They are both missing Service Pack 1 which is leaving you open to all kinds of problems.

Service Pack 1 for XP

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa…p1/default.mspx

Service Pack 1 for Internet Explorer.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downlo…p1/default.mspx

Install then Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Tried to install service pack, actually I had tried that before also..but tried again and it won't install…took forever to tell me that "XP service pack 2 cannot install, product key used to install microsoft windows may not be valid" Ok, now what? I feel a little bit like this… :wall: Is this going to be fixable you think or do you think we should start over from scratch? It's running really slow lately.. Thanks for all the help though, I wouldn't have a clue about most of it :)
Backup your Registry…
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run…)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

Give this a try and see if it solves the problem……….

Go to Start>Run and Copy/Paste in:
regsvr32 wuaueng.dll

Click on OK or hit ENTER, wait a few seconds, then click on OK in the
RegSvr32 dialogue box.

Now, open the registry editor (Start>Run type in regedit then click on OK or
hit ENTER) and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv
If you find a DeleteFlag value in the right-hand pane, right-click on it and
select Delete.
You lost me after the export part…what file am I supposed to be saving? The box opens, and I set it to all files, but need to type something in the box…not sure what. Sorry.
