Hi -
Running Windows XP, with Spybot, PestPatrol, Webroot Spysweeper, NAV, and Zone Alarm Pro in place. Apropos bug has taken over system; ZA Pro indicates placement/replacement of "gibberish" executables, system files, and .dlls in Super Trusted Zone upon rebooting despite their deletions. Multiple, unprompted warm boots, multiple pings, "50" IE windows opening within seconds, etc. NAV once tagged Trojan.Phel for removal - I believe that has been addressed. Concerned re: sensitive information (banking, passwords, et al) - is this bug a key-logger as well? System Restore inoperable. "IPInsight" adware part of Yahoo DSL Sftware. Was set to do a destructive system restore when I came upon this forum - thought I'd give it a shot.

Also note that NAV has quarantined/backed-up the following:

index[1].htm - Threat Name: Trojan.Phel
MediaGatewayX.dll - Threat Name: Adware.MediaPass
pcs_0002.exe - Threat Name: SecurityRisk.Downldr
pcs_0002[1].exe - Threat Name: SecurityRisk.Downldr
PS1of1.exe - Threat Name: SecurityRisk.Downldr

In my zeal/panic, I also deleted these other two (2) files:

1. PS2.exe (a x-Media Keyboard component)
This was in response to the message: "CTF loader trying to monitor keyboard.mouse strokes".

2. A DLL file I can't recall the name of (??kernalcorn??.dll) - not one of my more intellectual moments…sorry.

I also recall reference to sysais.exe as a potential bug/corrupted file.

Most importantly, please find my 10/8/05 HijackThis Log below. Profound thanks in advance for your assistance…

Hello Dazed12, welcome to the forum.

Important: Do this before any fix.

Please put your HijackThis in it's own folder, (I create a new folder in C:\ named HJT).
You can do a Right Click on any open area on the desktop, New> Folder, then rename the folder HJT.

Go to where your HijackThis is and Right Click on HijackThis.exe, select Cut, then open the new folder you just created (HJT) Right Click in the folder and select paste.

The reason we do this is Hijackthis creates backup files just in case you'd need to restore one and we'll be cleaning out the temp files.

We also need to disable two programs that you have running. They can stop the fix.

To disable SpySweeper:

Open it click >Options over to the left then >program options >Uncheck "load at windows startup".
Over to the left click "shields" and uncheck all there.
Uncheck "home page shield".
Uncheck 'automaticly restore default without notifiction".

To disable TeaTimer

1) Run Spybot-S&D
2) Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
3) On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
4) Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts
5) Restart your computer.

After the above:

Download CWShredder from my signature below. Unzip it on the desktop.
Open CWShredder and with ALL other windows closed, click fix.

Go here and run at least one of the online scans, allow them to delete whatever they find:

TrendMicro HouseCall
eTrust AntiVirus Web Scanner
Panda ActiveScan
Note any thing that can't be fixed
Reboot when done.

Next:

Even if you've already run these, make SURE they're up-to-date and run per instructions.

Make sure you have the up-to-date versions of Spybot V 1.4 and Ad-aware SE Build 1.06 . All are free and available below.

Download Spybot, install and update. Then download Ad-aware, install, and update.

Spybot:

Install the program and launch it.

Go to Start > Programs >Spybot > Search & Destroy and choose Spybot S&D

Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D
Click the button to "Search for Updates" and download and install the Updates.
Next click the button "Check for Problems"
When Spybot is complete, it will be showing "RED" (RED) entries "BLACK" entries and "GREEN" (GREEN) entries in the window
Put a check mark beside the RED (RED) entries ONLY.
Choose "Fix Selected Problems" and allow Spybot to fix the RED (RED) entries.

Ad-Aware FULL SCAN:

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now then click Connect and download the latest reference files.

From main window :Click Start then under Select a scan Mode check Perform full system scan.
Next deselect Search for negligible risk entries.
Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal and get rid of it.(Right-click the window and choose select all from the drop down menu and click Next)

Empty Recycle Bin

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Sir -

Thank you so much for your time and attention - you folks truly do not receive enough praise for the services you provide.

I followed your instructions - TrendMicroHouseCall found JAVA_BYTEVER.A-1 via "C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\javapi\v1.0\jar\" with a zipped file reference - which I deleted. Upon reboot, the system appeared much better. However, subsequent scans revealed the following and I'm unsure what are systemic traces and what may be reinstalls:

1. ZA Pro - found "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Aprps" - which I deleted.
2. PestPatrol - found a reference in my Windows Registry - which I deleted (sorry, didn't note specifics).
3. AdAware - found "Coulomb Dialer" in System Restore - which I deleted.
4. SpySweeper - found "C:\ProgramFiles\winatrol\wingenerics.dll" - which I deleted TWICE (the second time, it was present again after a warm boot).

ZA Pro continues to indicate untraceable gibberish programs with "Super Trusted" access. Moreover, ZA indicates there are 556 Programs (and growing) that are being monitored. My sense is that something is still amiss - troubled by the potential presence of dialers. There are no more unprompted warm boots. I'm worried that a keylogger may be present - is that possible?

Additionally, my ICMP Ping Port is OPEN after checking for system vulnerabilities at Security.Symantec.com in response to a site query allowing Symantec to change my ZA Pro settings to continue with a more in-depth scan - cannot close port via ZA Pro since (don't bother… I slapped myself in the forehead). Similar scans at PCFlank.com do not indicate any open ports (not sure if they perform ICMP Ping test) but all testing sites find multiple Closed Ports and only a few Stealthed ones.

I obviously want all my Ports Stealthed - unclear why I'm having difficulty doing so with ZA Pro and how much is attributable to my ISP. Any suggestions for different software? Would you recommend a physical firewall? Please advise…

Thanks, again…
You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

Please download AproposFix from here:
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/aproposfix.exe

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.
Sir -

Followed your instructions…
Please find HijackThis Scan and aproposfix.exe Log as requested below:

I suggest you do this:

We need to disable a couple programs you have running. They can stop our changes we need to make.

After Reboot:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Looking real good

Backup your Registry…
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run…)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.
Hi -

Backed up Registry - ran RegSeeker and deleted approximately 800 files… System hasn't run this fast since I purchased it 10 months ago. :P

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
Hi -

Can't thank you enough. You were great. Can I wax your car or paint your house…..something? Anything?

Am I correct in my thinking that any nasties that were present are now gone? Can I resume using the PC for sensitive transactions (e.g., banking, online orders, etc.)?

Can I/should I use Spywareblaster, Spywareguard, IESPY AD, and Sygate Firewall in lieu of PestPatrol, Webroot Spysweeper, and Zone Alarm Pro?

Regarding that Open Port - any suggestions? That's my primary concern. Is Sygate hard to configure in comparison to ZA Pro? I really want to be fully Stealthed. Sorry for all the questions… but please let me know…

Again, thanks so much…

:D
