Eight hours now and still where I started. Win2K. I'm fairly knowledgeable, very careful, obviously did or didn't do something!! Norton AV tells me Trojan.Vundo found in C:\WINNT\system32\rqrsq.dll
Unable to repair, quarantine or delete in Normal or Safe Mode. Ad Aware nor Spybot S&D find/remove it. File won't delete-is being used by Windows. To further complicate things, my wireless network won't respond, don't know if it is Charter or this problem. Am working from my son's computer on dial-up.

Here's the HiJack This log. How do I "unhook" this nasty little thing from Windows? Thank you so much!

Thanks, LDTate. My system is Win2K, so I wasn't sure about running that XP fix. I reconnected, and turns out it may just have been my cable modem or network router last night. We're running again, albeit v-e-r-y slowly on this computer, but it IS the one in trouble. I've played around with some stuff, so am posting a current hijackthis log:

  • After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
  • Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death" this is normal, do not worry!
  • Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.
Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options…"
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"
Put a check next to the following (Make sure nothing else is checked!):
  • Empty Recycle Bins
  • Delete Cookies
  • Delete Prefetch files
  • Cleanup! All Users
Click OK
Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.
wow-Active Scan took about 2 hours to run! I had some issues with the instructions that read:

type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
C:\WINNT\system32\qsrqr.dll
This will be the vundo filename spelt backwards. for example if the vundo dll was dundo.dll you would have the user enter odnuv.*

I did not realize the was html, and the Vundo fix didn't like that. I re-ran the Vundo fix, and the second time I tried qsrqr.* and it didn't argue with me, but HijackThis did not open.

I opened it, ran it, and after I selected FIX CHECKED, everything was okay except of course, HijackThis did not close on its own.

The Cleanup! (cool program) did not have Delete Prefetch files available–that choice was grayed out. I selected the other three.

Here is the most recent hijackthis log. I haven't rebooted since I came out of Safe Mode.

If you dont have these three programs I would recommend that you get them. Spywareblaster, Spywareguard and IESPY AD. They will add 1000's of sites to your resticted zone and block some hijacks from happening. I also have a FREE FIREWALL and FREE ANTI VIRUS if you need one.

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system.

Keep your system up to date and run Adaware & Spybot, once a week works, and hopefully you will be ok from here on. Both are available below.

Safe Surfing. :D
:D I thank you, kind sir. Windows 2000 doesn't have System Restore, at least I've never seen it. The system seems to have returned to normal, as far as I can tell. I'm not getting any indication of further problems. I do run AdAware and Spybot S&D (updated) once weekly, and more often if I think I've been wandering in dangerous territory on 'net. I have Norton A/V with Live Update, and I do a system scan about once a week as well. I will add the three programs you have suggested. I really, really appreciate the help. In nine years online, I've managed to have only one experience with a virus (emailed, from a client, allowed in via a vulnerability I was SURE I'd downloaded the patch for…) and certainly NOTHING like this. It was TOTALLY out of my capabilities. Here's hoping I don't need to come back soon :) But it's sure nice to know you're here if I do. Linda
