I've run Spybot and McAfee to try to clean this,
to no avail. Here's the HJT generated log, what should
I remove?

Thanks! Paul

Hello Paul and welcome to TomCoyote forum. If you still need help and are not being helped elsewhere then follow these directions. You have a nasty trojan but we are lucky to have a fix, it is important you follow the directions carefully. I am also going to schedule the removal of some clutter that is the R1 and R0 area of your log. You can click on any of these to see where it goes. If you don't use them then check and remove them, may make your browser run a little better.

Paul, this is very likely a trojan, note it is running from system32 folder instead of C:Programs. I am going to schedule removal, but I want you to check it first to be sure, please post the result of the check for me. Here is the item: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RegSvr32] C:\WINDOWS\system32\msmsgs.exe Use one or more of these free online file scans to find out what it is:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html
If it should turn out to be valid, just pass over the removal instructions for the item. Thanks.

Thanks to noahdfear and any others who worked on this fix.

STARTS HERE:
Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

===================================================

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Thanks…pskelley

Thanks so much! The system seems to be running better now….
but I wanted an opinion(s) on the Ewido scan, specifically
if I should delete all that was suggested.

Here are all the logs you requested to see.

NOTE: I ran the Kaspersky scan but it didn't flag C:\WINDOWS\system32\msmsgs.exe
so I left it in during the HJT scan.

I ran HJT is safe mode, here's the log post clean up…

Then ran Ad-aware and removed all it suggested.
Then ran Ewido scan, but did NOT remove any files as I wasn't sure
which (if any) I should keep. Here's the Ewido log…

Hi Paul, Thanks for your feedback. Looks like the scanner was wrong about msmsgs.exe?
I just did not like where it is running from. I suppose it is ok, you can take a look at the properties if you wish. I have the file on my WindowsXP machine but it is in C:\Program Files, that is what threw up the flag on it. It may be worth your while to run another or both of the scans. I see the item below in:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background just below the other one which is where I expect it to run from. Make very sure you are scanning the one running from the System32 folder. C:\WINDOWS\system32\msmsgs.exe

I am sorry but many of the bad items are still there, because removal of the bad stuff by Ewido is such an important part of the fix, we will need to run the complete fix again. I also have no way of knowing if you rebooted after the fix as you are showing me a log in safe mode. Unless you rebooted the log would not change.

I want you to go back to here: STARTS HERE: and do the complete fix again (with the exception of the fact you will not have to do the downloads) I have looked at the Ewido scan report and all of that stuff needs to go. Before you start I would like you to follow these instructions:

MANUAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR SYSTEM RESTORE
1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore,
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

This will give Ewido clean System Restore files to scan. Again, make sure you Delete anything Ewido finds or quarantine it if it will not let you delete. Run the complete instructions to the end. Some of the HJT items may be removed by Ewido, just do not miss any. When you have completed all instructions, please restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the new Ewido scan report.

Thanks…Phil
Again, thanks so much! I'm very appreciative.

Ok, so I turned off system restore,
rebooted and turned on system restore,
rebooted into safe mode
then re-did all the scanning like before (it was much faster
this time!).

First HJT scan, but the files that you told me to delete last time
were not in the scan this time…so then on to
smitrem.exe: here's the log file…nothing it it really.

then ran Ad-aware and removed anything it found,

then ewido scan and removed everything it highlighted,
here's the log…

While their are no silver bullets or 100% guarantees, the information above along with safe online surfing habits will go a long way towards keeping you clean.

Safe surfing…Phil
