Ken,

I had a very hard time completing all of these steps. This SurfSideKick just doesn't want to be deleted! First, I received a HJT error:

An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modBackup_MakeBackup(sItem=O20 - AppInit_DLLs: repairs302972949.dll)
Error #5 - Invalid procedure call or argument

Please email me at [removed], reporting the following:
* What you were trying to fix when the error occurred, if applicable
* How you can reproduce the error
* A complete HijackThis scan log, if possible

Windows version: Windows NT 5.01.2600
MSIE version: 6.0.2900.2180
HijackThis version: 1.99.1

This message has been copied to your clipboard.
Click OK to continue the rest of the scan.

Then, I was unable to delete the SurfSideKick file folder or the file repairs302972949.dll files because the system stated that they were in use by another file or program and I would have to close that first. This was all in SafeMode.

Here is my Lates HJT Scan:

Janeen
:(
Don't frown Janeen :D we will get rid of this garbage.

First I want you to download Pocket Killbox to your desktop.

Please reboot into Safemode:
Turn on the computer.
Immediately begin tapping the F8 key
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.

Open HJT Scan Only and put a checkmark next to the following entries, close all windows (The only window that should be open is HJT) and click on Fix Checked

* R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {02EE5B04-F144-47BB-83FB-A60BD91B74A9} - C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\SskBho.dll
* O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 3] C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe
* O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 3] C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe
* O20 - AppInit_DLLs: repairs302972949.dll

Open Killbox
Click on Tools>Delete Temp Files
Check the following boxes:

* Unregister .dll before deleting (unless it is greyed out)
* Delete on Reboot

Highlight the following entries below One At A Time and then Copy & paste them ONE At A Time into the Killbox topmost box. Be sure to copy and paste the entire path
Example : C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\SskBho.dll

C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\SskBho.dll
C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\repairs302972949.dll

After pasting them one by one into the topmost textbox. After each entry, Click the Red X it will ask you to confirm the deletion, you will need to click Yes
A second message will ask to Reboot now? you will need to click No until you have pasted the last file at which time you click yes.

Note: Killbox will let you know if the file does not exist.

After the last file is entered, then reboot your machine.

Post a new HJT log please
Ok, here we go. Thanks so much for all your help so far!

jcompwiz,

I don't know why you got the error with HJT, why don't you delete the entire Hijackthis folder and download and install a fresh copy via the links in my signature at the bottom of the page. Here are the instructions again.

I know we are all busy, but you need to check back sooner because when you are infected and use the internet, your chances for downloading more garbage are greater, so we need to clean you up as quickly as possible.

This will install the current version of Hijackthis 1.99.1 in the proper folder.

* It is extremely important that HIJACKTHIS resides in its own folder, we will use it to make changes
to your system, HIJACKTHIS will make backups of those changes. If HIJACKTHIS is not in its own folder, those backups could be lost.

* Go to MY COMPUTER
* Your C: Drive
* In the column on the left, click on MAKE NEW FOLDER
* Name the folder HIJACKTHIS.
* Follow the link at the bottom of my post to download the current version.
* Download it to your desktop
* Use the BROWSE FUNCTION and unzip this file to your new Hijackthis folder
* So… it should reside in C:\ HIJACKTHIS\HIJACKTHIS.EXE

Now go to Start/ Control Panel/ Add-Remove Programs and look for any instance of Surfsidekick, highlight it and click on Remove

Reboot your computer into Safemode, this is very important.

Run Hijackthis and tick the box for these entries, make sure the only window you have open is Hijackthis and click on Fix Checked.

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {02EE5B04-F144-47BB-83FB-A60BD91B74A9} - C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\SskBho.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 3] C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SurfSideKick 3] C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3\Ssk.exe
O20 - AppInit_DLLs: repairs302972961.dll

Now while in Safemode, look for and delete the following files and folders.

C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick
C:\Program Files\SurfSideKick 3

repairs302972961.dll

This maybe in either..
C:\WINDOWS or
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32

Reboot your computer and post a new log please.
I didn't have any problems this time. Removal was quite easy.

here's the new log:

Hello Again, My apology, but I never got an email notification that you replied. It looks like surfside kick is finally gone :thumbup: , but we still need to remove one bad line, I am going to look over you log but won't be able to get back to you until this evening. Ken :D
jcompwiz,

This is what we need to do, and hopefully your system will be clean and I can give you some securtiy tips and free programs to install to help keep your system more secure.

Download Pocket Killbox to your desktop.

* Open Pocket Killbox
* Copy and paste these two files, do them one at a time, copy the entire path into the box that says Full Path of File to Delete

C:\WINDOWS\repairs302972961.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\repairs302972961.dll

* Set it to Delete on Reboot
* Tick the box that says End Explorer shell while killing file
* Click on the Red circle with the white X
* It will ask you to confirm the deletion…Say yes
* It will ask you to reboot, say NO

Now copy and paste the second file, do it the same way
When it asks you to reboot, say YES

* If Killbox does not reboot, than do it manually.

Open HJT Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows, mark this entries and click on Fix Checked

Reboot your computer and post a new HJT log please.

I'm so thankful to be rid of SurfSideKick! What a relief!

I was unable to find the first two files for killbox to delete, so I did nothing there. However I did remove the files you recommended through HT and rebooted. Here is an updated log file:

Ok Ken, I did as you asked. However, I recieved a HJT error when deleting the file there while in safemode. I've printed the error for you below. I ran the scan again, and didn't see it. I assume that even though I received the error it was taken care of. I didn't find any other incidences of the file, either through Killbox or via looking in my files myself.

Here is the error:
An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modBackup_MakeBackup(sItem=O20 - AppInit_DLLs: repairs302972961.dll)

Thanks again, Ken. Janeen
Hello Janeen,

Your log looks clean :thumbup: It was a long hard ride but you did an excellent job following my instructions :D

Here are a couple of optional fixes. You can fix them with HJT if you wish.

If you don't want Paypal to be your start page, then you can fix these two, otherwise leave them alone.
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.paypal.com/
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://www.paypal.com

If you don't know how to change your startpage, by all means post back and let me know.

If you still have Real Player on your system and use it, then leave this alone, other wise fix it.

O9 - Extra button: Real.com - {CD67F990-D8E9-11d2-98FE-00C0F0318AFE} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\Shdocvw.dll

Here are some free programs and tips for keeping your system up to date, and to help keep all the riff raff out of your system.

*** Janeen, be sure to follow the tips for System Restore because everything YOU :D cleaned off your system is backed up in System Restore and if you should ever use System Restore in the future for another problem and revert your system to an earlier date…You wll be infected all over again. :rant2:

* Download and Install CCleaner, Click on RUN TOOL, when you run the Issues Scan and it asks
you to back up the registry Say Yes.

Now that your clean, we need to erase all possible older infected files that may still be lurking on your system.
* Clean out your TEMP FILES
* This procedure should be run from SAFEMODE for better results.

To Enter SAFEMODE

* Go to START/ SHUT OF YOUR COMPUTER/ RESTART
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu.
* Use the UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the ENTER KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD

* Go to My Computer/ C: Drive/ Documents and Settings/ Local Settings/ Every User on this Computer
and delete all the contents of the Temp Folder

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Temp and delete all the contents of the Temp Folder

* Go to My Computer/ C:/ Windows/ Prefetch and remove all the contents of the Prefetch Folder.
But not the Prefetch folder itself.

NOW RE-BOOT NORMALLY

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
* When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now Empty your Recycle Bin

System Restore makes regular backups of all your settings, if you ever had to use this program to restore your
system to a previous date, you will be infected all over again so we need to clean out the previous Restore Points

Turn off System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

* Right-click My Computer.
* ClickProperties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore on all Drives.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

* Go to Start/ Control Panel/ Performance and Maintenance/ System Restore/ Create a New Restore Point
You can name the restore point anything you like, something that you can remember

* Make sure that your ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE is up to date and run a full scan at least once aweek.

* Here are Free Anti-Virus Programs if you need one

AVG Free Edition
AntVir Personal Edition

* Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06
Check for Updates and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis.

* Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed.

* Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.

* Win Patrol This program will warn you when any changes are being made to your system and
give you the option to deny the change.

* IE- Spyad IE-Spyad places over 4000 web sites and domains
in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed,
although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

* Firefox Browser
It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use
them both. When it asks you if you want it to be your default browser, say NO and take the checkmark out of the box to ask you again. After you use this
for awhile, you will want to make it your default.

* Thunderbird Mail There companion mail program was highly favored in PCWorld Magazine,
this has a good spam filter and is more secure than Outlook Express.

* Zone Alarm Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't
access the internet without it.

* WINDOWS UPDATES - Enable Automatic Updates
Right click on MY COMPUTER/Click on PROPERTIES/ AUTOMATIC UPDATES and put a mark in the radio button
DOWNLOAD UPDATES FOR ME BUT LET ME CHOOSE WHEN TO INSTALL THEM.

* Go to START/ CONTROL PANEL> PERFROMANCE AND MAINTENANCE> REARRANGE ITEMS ON YOUR HARD DISK TO MAKE PROGRAMS RUN FASTER
This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to keep your system running good. The first time you run it, it may take awhile.

Janeen, I want to thank you for your patience, I know the fixes sometimes can be a little overwhelming, but you did real well. I am going to keep this thread open for a few days in case you have any other questions. I will be off line for about a week or so, but someone else at Tom Coyote will take over for me.

Thanks for using Tom Coyote.

Ken :)
