Hello.
My first problem appeared a few months ago. My Zonelabs firewall is blocking something from http://217.170.4.137/_vti_bin/index.html
216.127.33.119
(Appears to be a gift from I.S.T., a spyware outfit)
which attempts to install some kind of search bar. I downloaded and ran FxIstbar.exe, but as the bar has not actually been installed, this fix does nothing.
2nd problem appeared a few days ago. Zonelabs is blocking Project1/exe82.exe. Seems to be slowing the machine down. I use firefox, but an IE window opens occasionally in the background with 'page not found' text.
I have ran ad-aware and spy-bot S&D (in safe mode). SPybot finds some weboprimiser thing, but can't remove it because it is apparently running in the background.
3rd problem: Since yesterday zonelabs has been blocking some progs with wierd characters too.

Below is my HJT log.
I would appreciate any help in resolving any of these problems. Thanks.

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread.
Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi again, and thanks for the quick response. Following your instructions, I had a problem in step 1. After locating the spool service, the 'stop' button is disabled. I cant stop the service. So i right-clicked on properties and set the startup-type to 'disabled', then restarted the machine. Now, in services, the status for 'spool' is blank. In step 2 i managed to kil the exe82.exe process. However, i cannot kill the 'spool' process ("C:\WINNT\spoollv.exe"). I get the following message: "The selected process could not be killed. It may have already closed, or it may be protected by windows. This process might be a service, which you can stop from the services applet in Admin Tools." I have proceeded no further. Any Ideas?
Thanks once again for your help.
The machine seems to be behaving a lot better.
The 3 items below which i was supposed to check/fix did not appear in the hjt scan:

O15 - Trusted Zone: *.media-motor.net
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.popuppers.com
O23 - Service: spool - Unknown owner - C:\WINNT\spoollv.exe

However, the 'SPOOL' item is still lurking around in 'services' (disabled), and it is still running as a process (which i can't kill).
Should i worry about this?
Below is current hjt log.

However, the 'SPOOL' item is still lurking around in 'services'

Tell me how it's spelled?
There are good Spool files like spool32, spoolsv, etc.
Oddly enough, there is no such file (C:\WINNT\spoollv.exe). So how is 'Services' still picking up a reference to it? Btw, I did come across a little rascal called 'exe82.exe' in the WINNT dir, which i have duly deleted.
Backup your Registry…
- Press "CTRL - ALT - DEL" keys all at the same time to start "Task Manager"
- In the Task Manager window click on "File", then from the drop-down menu select "New Task (Run…)"
- In the "Create New Task" window enter\type "regedit" (without quotes)
- Once Regedit opens click on the FILE menu and select Export
- Save the file as backup. Save the file somewhere you will remember and not delete.
IMPORTANT: make sure to set the export range to ALL

I recommend you download RegSeeker. Extract it to it's own folder, open and double click RegSeeker.exe to start the program. Maximize the window and click clean registry. Check all sections and click OK. When the scan is complete, verify the backup box in lower left corner is checked and click the select all button, then select all again. Then right click within the search results and select delete. Run it again and again, deleting everything it finds until it finds nothing. Reboot and make sure your programs are working properly, control panel and add/remove programs windows open, etc (basically just do a quick check of everything). In the event anything was 'broken', you can open RegSeeker, click backups and double click any/all files to put the information back. A reboot may be required for the effects to be seen. Reboot When done.
Hi. I installed regseeker as you suggested and it has cleared out a whole load of stuff. I rebooted, and everything seems to be working fine. However, there still remains the 'spool' thing in services, with a difference! Now, when i right click on it, the 'path to executable' is empty. I opened regedit and found 3 'spool' entries. 1. spool 2. spooler 3. spoolv, (JUST ONE 'L' THIS TIME) with keyname= HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\spoolv value= \??\C:\WINNT\system32\spoolv.sys you think number 3 might be the problem? Should i just delete it manually from the registry? I guess it's probably doing no harm, but since we're so close to cleaning up, seems a shame not to finish the job to perfection.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\spoolv
value= \??\C:\WINNT\system32\spoolv.sys

Yes, kill the value

Also do a search on your hard drive for spoolv.sys
ok. i deleted imagePath(or something like that)= \??\C:\WINNT\system32\spoolv.sys from the registry. i've re-run regseek, and all is clean. i did a search for the spoolv.sys and nothing turned up. I still have the reference in services. should i delete the entire entry from the registry: 'HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\spoolv' ?
