Hello! I've been working on freeing my brother's computer of viruses and spyware, but there's something on there that I can't quite locate or get rid of! Here is the most recent HJT log. Any assistance would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Bridget

Step 2
Please set your computer to show all files.
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Clear "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  • Clear "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
You will need to reverse this process when all steps are done.

Step 3
Please delete the following files/folders:

C:\Program Files\DNS\Catcher.dll (file missing)

C:\WINNT\Jzdyychk.dll << File only
C:\WINNT\System32\dmccn2.exe << File only

C:\Program Files\ClockSync << Whole folder
C:\Program Files\sder << Whole folder

If you have any problem deleting these items, reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter') and try again.

Step 4
Launch Notepad, and copy/paste the box below into a new text file. Save it as FindFile.bat and save it on your Desktop.

dir C:\WINNT\System32\m?dtc.exe /a h > files.txt
notepad files.txt

Locate FindFile.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it. It will open Notepad with some text in it. Please post the text here.

Step 5
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread. Include the results of FindFile.bat
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.
Hey–thanks for your help! Ok, when I went to delete the files in step 3, all but the sder folder were missing. However, there was a C:\WINNT\Jzdyychk.ini. I didn't delete it–thought I'd check first. The mirar toolbar has reappeared–I thought I got rid of it last week, but apparently not! As for the rest:

Here is the Notepad thingy:

Hi–
There was neither wuauclt.dll file nor an m?dtc.exe (beyond the msdtc.exe). However, there was a wuauclf1.exe in addition to the wuauclf.exe.

here's the latest hjt log.

Just one item that I'm not sure about. The only information I can find about it is it being a Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim game. Not sure why it would be on the desktop and running at startup though.
Do you know what it is? Right click on the file and choose 'properties', than on the 'version' tab note what the "Company" and "Version" are.

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Desktop\Majesty.exe

If you still are unsure what this file is, please submit it to the following link for a scan.
http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Let me know what you find out about it.
Also, let me know how the computer is running.
I'm not sure about the majesty.exe file either, and that was one that I've considered deleting before I sought help. I tried sending it to the website you suggested, but got the message, "The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file." I don't think there is a firewall set up on that computer, but I'm not sure. Also, I was getting dozens of pop ups that said, "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." They'd appear every 5 seconds or so, even if I wasn't using IE, and when I'd click "OK," I'd have to close several of them, and nothing else happened. If IE was open, it wouldn't close by clicking "OK" like it normally would. I decided to restart the computer in safe mode to run ewido, and when I was shutting it down, I got the error box, "umdenb32.exe The application failed to initialize because system is shutting down." ewido removed 6 pieces of spyware, and the IE error box is not popping up anymore. Do you think I ought to go ahead and remove majesty.exe? I can't find it to check the details, and I don't see any games, etc. that it would be part of.
Go ahead and remove that item with Hijackthis.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Majesty.exe] C:\DOCUME~1\Owner\Desktop\MAJEST~1.EXE /r

Since the rest of the log appears clean, I'll give you my prevention speech now. :)

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.)

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
2. On the System Restore tab, put a check mark in the 'Turn Off System Restore' check box.
3. Click OK, and then click Yes.
4. Restart the computer.
5. Repeat steps 1 - 2, this time clearing the box beside 'Turn Off System Restore', click 'OK'.

MOST IMPORTANT: You Need to Update Windows and IE to get all the Latest Security Patches to protect your computer from the malware that is on the internet.
I recommend going to the following link and update to SP2. This adds more security and extra features including a pop-up blocker for Internet Explorer.
Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer Updates

Here is a great link that explains the procedure for updating to SP2 with less complications (scroll down to the second post).

I suggest that you download these programs to help keep the computer clean:

Spyware Blaster - Blocks bad ActiveX items from installing on your computer. Spyware Blaster runs silently in the background.
ie-spyad - Puts over 12,000 bad URLs into your restricted sites for Internet Explorer.
Google Toolbar - Blocks many unwanted pop-ups in Internet Explorer.
Firefox - 'Safer' alternative to the Internet Explorer web browser.

Here are two very good and free malware scanners:

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4
AdAware SE v1.06
Set-up Instructions for Spybot S&D; and Adaware SE

If you have them already, check to make sure that they are the newest version.

Update these regularly.

You may also want to read the following posts to learn how to better secure your computer.
"So how did I get infected in the first place"

Be sure to keep Windows and your Anti-virus updated.
