Hello

I have a number of things controlling my computer that I haven't been able to remove with the MS Sasser removal tool, SpybotSD, NoAdware, and MS Antispyware.
I usually use Firefox for my browser but got the unremovable Sasser worm through it. I got some more stuff when I used IE to scan for security patches. BTW, I got help from this forum many moons ago but wasn't able to thank the guy who helped because I tried to install MS Security Patch 2 and completely crashed my computer, so I would like to thank you now, whoever and where ever you may be.

Hello,

Help, please!

I am having trouble with FURootkit.F and some program that keeps trying to change my security settings – MS Antispyware blocks it but it keeps trying persistently so you have to keep clicking to block it even though the box for "remember this…" is checked.

There are probably some other things too.

I've run SpybotSD, Adaware, and MS antispyware with updates but they all tell me there are no problems. I've also run the MS sasser removal program. It keeps finding the FURootkit.F problem but can't completely eliminate it.

Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

I want to check some things before beginning any cleaning operations.

Run Hijack This!.

Click on Open Misc Tools section

To the right of Generate Startuplist log, there are two boxes.

Check them both, then click Generate Startuplist log.

"Copy/paste" the startuplist log into this thread.
:)
Micah 6:8, Thanks for the offer to help.

Another problem I'm having is that when I dial-up and connect – yes, I'm in the dark ages – IE loads along with Firefox. Firefox is set as my preferred browser.

Another thing that is very strange about my comp is that it has two XP Home operating systems on it. I had a bad crash when trying to install SP2 and a friend set it up this way because it was the only way he could think of that wouldn't wipe my data – yes, I am one of those idiots who seldom does a back-up and still haven't really learned my lesson. When it starts up it asks on a black screen whether you want to use XP 1 or XP 2. XP 2 is the default and I always use it.

Here is the start-up log:

A little more work is required….

We need to disable your Microsoft AntiSpyware Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.
  • Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Click on Options, Settings.
  • In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
  • Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
  • Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
  • After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
  • Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Compaq32 Service Drivers] msconfig32.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Corp Updates] wupdates.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Compaq32 Service Drivers] msconfig32.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Corp Updates] wupdates.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Compaq32 Service Drivers] msconfig32.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\RunServices: [Compaq32 Service Drivers] msconfig32.exe

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This!.

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Delete all of the following noted (in red) file(s)/FOLDER(s) you can find:

c:\winxp\system32\wupdates.exe <— file

msconfig32.exe <— file
(will probably be in the "c:\winxp\system32" folder, too)

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new Hijack This! log file into this thread. :)
Hello Again :wavey:

Booting up this am before I saw your latest post, I had a startup program denied by MS Antispyware – task.exe. Don't know if this should be denied or not. I looked at its properties and it didn't give any id info.
Firefox seemed to hang so I used MS Malicious Removal and it found VirTool:WinNT/FURootkit.F I ran it again just now and it didn't find anything.

I was able to find and remove wupdates.exe. On the first search for msconfig32, the only ones I found were in the recycle bin. I emptied the bin, did another search, and found nothing.

Here is the latest Hijack log.

I'm not real sure what "task.exe" is either (couldn't find a precise match), but it's not "good".

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Task Manager] task.exe

O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [Microsoft Task Manager] task.exe

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This!.

Reboot in "safe" mode.

Delete all of the following noted (in red) file(s)/FOLDER(s) you can find:

c:\winxp\system32\task.exe <— file

Some malware files may be "hidden".
Be sure to show hidden files when looking for these file(s) and/or folder(s).

Reboot in normal mode and "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
Hey Micah,

Here we go again. When deleting task.exe, I noticed that there is also a taskman.exe and a taskmgr.exe.

Here is the latest hijack log>

The log looks good.

Both of those other programs are "friendly" programs.

I don't see any antivirus product. I would suggest you perform at least one of the following online virus scans:

Trend-Micro Housecall

Panda Activescan

Etrust Security Advisor

Bitdefender

Choose "fix" or "clean".

Let them remove any infections found. Reboot after each scan.

Report any infections found but not "cleaned" or removed.

After your system is "clean", maybe install a free antivirus:

AvgFree

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.

Micah, Thanks for all the help. I've had problems in the past loading MS patches. Service Pack 2 completely crashed my machine and I've been leary of trying again. I've also had problems installing antivirus software. I had Norton but it wouldn't reinstall after the crash. I also have Systemworks but it too wouldn't install. I'll try again, after I do a good back-up. I've been thinking I should just completely erasing the hard drive and reinstall everything – well everything that isn't bootleg. Thanks again \Tim
