Hello Kristy and welcome to the forum :) Sorry for the wait, we are very busy. If you are still waiting and are not being helped elsewhere, please do this:

1) I see some stuff that needs to be removed, mostly adware. I need to know what problems you are having, any error messages you are receiving "word for word".

2) You are running from a .zip file in a Temporary Directory and this is not a safe place because backups for safety can easily get lost. You should have received this warning:
http://russelltexas.com/malware/images/unsafefolder.gif I suggest you move HJT here: C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe. If you need instructions use these:
http://russelltexas.com/malware/createhjtfolder.htm
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial94.html

3) Do you know this: C:\WINDOWS\system32\97vbuldt.exe if not use one or more of the following links to identify if it is good or bad. You may have to enable hidden files and folder to find it: http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html here are the links to identify it:
http://virusscan.jotti.org/
http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus
http://www.virustotal.com/flash/index_en.html
Post the results for me to see along with a new HJT log in this same thread and I will respond as soon as possible after that.

Thanks…pskelley

Thanks so much for replying. Im not exactly a computer whizz but I followed your instructions as best I could. My computer is slow to start up. Freezes up at least three times a day. Sometimes it wont shut down completley, I have to kill the power to get it. Ive ran Ad-Aware…no spyware detected. Virus scans no spyware detected. Registry cleaner and after looking very very carefully deleted somethings and startup has sped up just a little. Any ideas?

Thanks for your help.
OK, Kristy, I understand and I will work you through this :) First, you must make sure you follow the directions. If you do not understand something let me know. I asked you to put HJT in a permanent folder and you did that, thank you.

Then I asked you to find out what this is: C:\WINDOWS\system32\97vbuldt.exe
If you do not know, then use the online scans I provided in #3 of the instructions to find out if it is good or bad. Open the scan and choose Browse. Locate the item and when you have done that then submit it. Information about the file will be returned, post that information for me to view. There is no need to move ahead, I will run all of the tools we need when I am ready for them.
After you find out what: C:\WINDOWS\system32\97vbuldt.exe is and post that information for me, this information is important, that item may be causing all of your problems. Then proceed with these instructions in order, thanks.

1) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp and please do not run it until I ask you to.

2) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

3) Ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

EDIT:
Open Task Manager then the Processes tab. Locate C:\WINDOWS\system32\97vbuldt.exe highlite it and end process on it.

4) Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

RIGHT Click on Start then click on Explore. Delete these files:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\97vbuldt.exe >>> file

C:\Windows\Prefetch: Locate this folder and delete all of the contents (NOT THE FOLDER) This information will tell you more about Prefetch:
http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles_…refetch-XP.html

5) Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results the information about 97vbuldt.exe if you have not already done so in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let me know how the computer is running now.

No problem Kristy :) Just finish the rest of the instructions. That item: C:\WINDOWS\system32\97vbuldt.exe is bad adware and we want to remove it. Continue with the fix, I am going to edit the HJT part to include the bad item. If you started on the HJT part before I could get it edited, let me know and we will remove the adware later. Thanks…Phil :wavey:

Ive got Spybot and the latest Ad-Aware. I also downloaded Ewido. It picked up a few cookies, got to 97.8% and froze up my computer so I had to reboot. I guess Ill leave that until tomorrow. Thanks again Phil. Goodnight Kristy and Aimee

The computer is starting up way faster than it was. Its still a little slow to react and froze up on the ewido scan (1st and 2nd attempts). Other than that its way better than it was. Thanks to you :D
Hi Kristy, Sorry for the delay he delay getting back to you :( One of the tools we use was malfunctioning so I waited for it to get up and running (Saw the new Jody Foster film while waiting  )

I am not sure why you are having the problem with Ewido. Every program just will not run on every computer. Ewido may have been conflicting with other installed software. When you have an issue running an installed scan like that, just run it in safe mode: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/tutorial61.html This last Ewido log is not representative of the situation when you first ran it. Rather after several attempts, this is what it removed the last time you ran the scan. I would love to see the first report. If you will, open the Ewido folder which will be in C:\Program Files\ and look for a notepad .txt file that has the earliest date. Open it to see if it is the first scan report. Then post that for me to view. That report may tell me about stuff Ewido removed that will help us. If you can't find it, then do not worry about it.

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 2:38:00 PM, on 9/27/2005

The log looks fine, there are a couple of items you may be able to turn off in MSCONFIG and start manually, but I see no malware. Concerning Ewido you realize the realtime protections go away after two weeks and you can keep and update the scanner or uninstall it, which ever you want. Since we are clean of malware, I think next about maintenance, are you keeping up with it, here are a few links that may help:
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documen…mb_tol_vvcu.asp
http://vlaurie.com/computers2/Articles/runbetter.htm
http://www.linkgrinder.com/tutorials/10_Ea…rs_article.html
Just don't try anything you are not comfortable doing.

I suggest a diagnostic here: http://www.pcpitstop.com/ they will even help you understand the results here: http://pcpitstop.invisionzone.com/index.php?act=SF&f;=3

Since your log is clean, here is some great information from Tony Klein, Texruss, ChrisRLG and Grinler to help you stay clean and safe online:

http://russelltexas.com/malware/allclear.htm
http://forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php?t=14

See if you can post the first Ewido scan for me if possible, also post any questions you have.

Thanks…pskelley
