Ok, looks like we got most of it. Good job. Let's get that winlogin.exe now. Please first save these directions to the desktop as a text file, because you will need to copy and paste part of them later, once we are in Safe Mode.
  • Please download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.
  • Then please reboot into Safe Mode.
  • Once in Safe Mode, please run Killbox.
  • Select "Delete on Reboot".
  • Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file name below to the clipboard by highlighting it and pressing Control-C:

    C:\WINDOWS\System32\winlogin.exe
  • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".
  • Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.
Reboot into normal mode and try removing the entry now with HJT.
No luck with winlogin.exe! Tried to follow Killbox instructions as suggested. "Paste" didn't work from file menu but control C did. However, still wouldn't fix when rebooted and used HJT - it still thinks it's a running process. Do you exit from Killbox and then reboot, or use Start menu to reboot with Killbox still open? I tried both ways, neither worked. Then tried to go with the immediate reboot option in Killbox and got "PendingFileRenameOperation Registry Data has been removed by External Process!" message.

Winlogin.exe is gone from Startup, but Windows Search shows it is now in C:\!Submit

It doesn't seem to be appearing in the HJT scan:

EVerything seems fine. Amazing! One problem that developed when I was first trying to fix this was that Excel stopped working. My laptop came supplied with a Microsoft Office Professional but when I tried to download the SP3 service pack a few days ago the download failed. Since then if I try to run Excel it acts as if this is the first time it has been used and tries to "install" it, then fails to find a file called data1.msi and won't go any further. I've searched for the file through Windows but it isn't on the hard drive. Word, Powerpoint and Access still work fine however! My original installation of MS Office was legal but I don't have an installation disk. Did I maybe lose something essential when I was trying disk cleanup programmes and other fixes before I found you?
