Computer Pros,

You helped me several months ago do a massive cleanup of my system and it's been running great. However, now I have two recurring spyware detections using SpyBot–Wild Tangent and n-Case–and SpyBot says I need to reboot to clean them, but they are either not getting cleaned or don't stay gone which tells me something else is there that keeps reinstalling them. I've attached my HJT log below:

I have a second problem I really need help with too. At many, not all websites I visit, when I click a link that should open a new window, it briefly pops in and then closes. When I try to right click and choose "Open in a new window" it will once in a while work and stay open, but more often it does not.

Thanks gang,

Hallo fhsIV,

This seems like a clean log to me, but HijackThis can not trace all of the spyware so please run Ewidoscan.

Before you do that you will have to close (temporarely) the antispywareprograms that are running now.

Disable SpywareGuard:
Right click the running icon of Spywareguard, it will open the program.
Then go to Menu, file, exit.
Then confirm the program is closed.

To disable AdWatch:
Open AdAware SE.
Go to AdWatch User Interface.
Go to Tools and Preferences.
At the bottom of the screen you will see 2 options Active and Automatic.
Active: This will turn Ad-Watch On\Off without closing it
Automatic: Suspicious activity will be blocked automatically
Uncheck both options. You can enable these after the scan is done.

Download Ewido scan
*When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
*Run Ewido — When you run it for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
*From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
*After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
Exit Ewido. DO NOT scan yet.

Reboot your pc into safe mode for all OS

Now scan with Ewido. Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

Post back here with a Ewidoscanlog.
Thanks Toscane, Interesting you are from the Netherlands. I am half Dutch, my mother came here (USA) when she was 19 and I still have family I visit once in a while in Goirle (near Tilburg), Druten, Maastricht, and some cousins living in Amsterdam. My cousin Tatiana Quax is the editor for Elle magazine there. My moeke is visiting me right now…. Anyway, posted below is the log your requested. I should tell you I did not get "Database could not be found" when I first ran Ewido, and when I did the update, it seemed to be updating properly, but I received the message "ewidoctrl.exe needed and not found" (or something similar). The file is in fact in the Ewido folder where I installed it. I ran Update again just to be sure and it said "No Update Available," so I assume it did what it was supposed to the first time. Question: In the future, will I always disable SpyGuard and Ad-Aware when I want to run an Ewido scan? Thanks again, ——————————————————— ewido security suite - Scan report ——————————————————— + Created on: 2:38:51 PM, 9/25/2005 + Report-Checksum: 380C137A + Scan result: C:\Documents and Settings\Kimberly\Cookies\[removed][2].txt -> Spyware.Cookie.Liveperson : Cleaned with backup C:\Documents and Settings\Kimberly\Cookies\[removed][1].txt -> Spyware.Cookie.Myaffiliateprogram : Cleaned with backup C:\QUANTEX FILES\BACKUP\Fun Apps\cupholder.exe -> Trojan.CokeGift : Cleaned with backup C:\QUANTEX FILES\BACKUP\Fun Apps\viagra.exe -> Not-A-Virus.Joke.Viagra : Cleaned with backup ::Report End
Thats nice to know about your Dutch relations :)

About your question of disabeling the 2 antispywareprograms: we allways let them disable before we let someone fix anything with HijackThis.
When you want to run Ewido it may not be necessary but just to be sure they will not interfere with the scanning proces I asked you.
Do not forget to re-enable those programs when we are al cleaned out!

As for your first question we can search in the register if you are still getting those messages about Wild Tangent and n-Case.

First I want you to clean a little.
To clean temporary files:
Go > start > run and type cleanmgr and click OK
Scan your system for files to remove.
Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
Click OK to remove those files.
Click Yes to confirm deletion.

Reboot the pc, post back and tell us how the computer is running.
:) Well, the computer seems to be running fine. I guess we'll see if those two spyware programs pop back up after a while. I have noticed the latest SpyBot S&D update runs much slower than previously.

:wtf: As for the explorer pop up problems, they remain. I looked a little closer and can't say for sure, but I think it must be a java problem. Generally links that target another URL don't offer any problems. I think it is primarily those that pop up a window for an interactive form or definitions or the like. Here are a couple examples of targets that pop and then immediately close before they can be viewed.

javascript: var popup_window = window.open('SupplyList.asp?Orderno=S13010627US&ItemCat=none&GuestId=','popup','toolbar=no,directories=no,location=no,status=no,menubar=no,resizeable=yes,scrollbars=yes,width=650,height=650'); popup_window.focus();

javascript: PopupWindow('../popupimage.asp?image=showcase/images/4960-5902674.jpg',480,480);

http://www.shutterfly.com/view/pictures.jsp#

If it is a javascript problem as I suspect, I'm not sure how to make sure what I have is latest/greatest. All my Windows updates are current.

Thanks, Floyd

All my Windows updates are current.

Are your Java updates current?
Which version of Java do you use?
As for the newest version, Java 1.5.0, you can clean out the cache like this:

Control panel -> Click the Java pictogram -> tabblad General ->
Under Temporary Internet files choose > Delete Files

As for the older version:
1. Start -> Controlpanel
2. Click the Java Plug-in pictogram
3. Click tabblad Cache
4. Choose clear
I guess what I meant was all the MS Windows Updates from their site and linked to through Explorer/Tools. I don't know anything about Java including what version I have and don't see any Java icons in my control panel. Can you point me in the right direction? Thanks a million!
As you dont see the Java icon you probably dont have Java seperately installed on your computer. Espacialy when your browser is Internet Explorer you do not need Jave because the options are built in. Please run Ewido once more and show me the logfile together with a fres HijackThislog in your next reply.
Here you go!

That is a clear log to me

Can you clean out your systemrestore:

Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected)

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Afterwards tell me how things went…
Hallo again. I haven't seen the Wild Tangent and n-Case problems resurface for some time now–we might have that one licked–but the new window pop-ups problem remains. Floyd
As you have SP2 installed on your machine, do you use the popupblocker?
It is very usefull and can be reached when your browser is open at > extra > internetoptions > Privacy
Check blocking popups and click OK
Yes, my pop-up blocker is on. But remember the problem isn't I'm getting unwanted pop-ups. The problem is when I click a pop-up link (Java I think), the window opens briefly and immediately closes. (Posts #1 and 5). Are we out of ideas? Floyd
Ah, now I see what you mean. Well, perhaps the securitylevel is to high? Within the adapted level (extra > Internetoptions) you can change it to "normal". And is the item "to execute Java-applets in scripts" checked?
Not seeing exactly what you reference, but under Tools>Internet Options>Security>Custom, Scripting of Java Applets is enabled and my overall security level is Medium.
