several problems with spyware

I am new to posting here and I hope I am doing as you ask. First off I did something stupid while in windows media player. A screen which looked like a microsoft sreen came up saying I needed new codec. After installing the new codec I have had many problems such as popups from search2k.net, problems with psguard, a popup saying I have iworm_attck_v122.02a and something called java_bytever.a . Just wondering if I really screwed up bad and what I can do to fix this. I have used several spyware checkers such as adaware, spybot and the new beta spyware checker from MS.

Just an updated Hijack this logfile as its been a couple days and I have been trying several different things. Some have helped others havn't but I still am having some problems with PSGuard as well as the search2k.net, which I believe are connected, taking over my home page as well as taking over anytime I try to go to a microsoft website.

Hopefully you someone will be able to help me solve this problem.

Please print these next instructions out, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode.


Download smitRem.exe and save the file to your desktop.
Double click on the file to extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items, then click FIX CHECKED:

Close HiJackThis.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.


Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.


Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Web > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

First of all, Sorry about posting so much. After doing so I realized that it would take much longer to get to me. My fault.

Second, I did as you posted except that when I ran smitrem it locked up up during the compiling and cleaning process at the end so I'm not sure if that part worked. I let it run for 8 hours and it didn't progress at all. I ran it a second time but it never went into the cleanup process the second time.

Third, I was hoping you could tell me what anti-virus and spyware programs and such I should have to prevent this from happening again. I have put in an application to join the sites classroom and hope to be able to help others as you have helped me but for now I would like to be somewhat protected.

And last, I will post a list of the logs as you have asked and for the moment it seems that the problem is fixed but I was wondering if this is something that is passed from computer to computer. I have 2 hooked up on my network but I was hoping to hook up my other 3. Making it 3 pc's and 2 mac's. lease let me know if you need me to do anything else and thanks so much for your help.

i fully understand that you posted many times to bump up the topic.
this is a specially hard infection to remove .

ok to proceed lets start by updating hijackthis to the newest version:
open hijacthis, click go to misc tools section. there find and click check for update online. download and install the new version. rescan with it and post the new log

about your question: theis ansty is not able to spread from machine to machine. it infects computers through a specially crafted web site. it contains an exploit for internet explorer, which silently downloads and executes the infection.
that leads to one of the answers on how to protect agains similar things: alternative browsers ;)

as for antiviruses: i firmly believe that any brand name anti virus is enough to protect a pc. as for antispyware programs, welll most of the time the free tools ( microsoft antispyware, spybot and adaware) do a good job
i can recommend trojan hunter too, or ewido, or a third anti trojan called boclean.
i will post more info on how to tighten up when we a are ready and clean :D

sorry, i was unable to access this site for some time due to a DNS problem

these need special treatment

I'm not having any of the problems that I had before. The only things that I see right now is I ran trojan hunter and it found a trojan then I ran panda and it found a virus and then I ran adware and it found some stuff but I was kinda hoping these were pretty normal things and all the major problems were fixed.
