dleshin,

Welcome to the forum, before we proceed with any fixes, I need you to move HJT into its own folder..

DO THIS FIRST
Your HIJACKTHIS program is current, but it is very important that it resides in its own folder.
We will use Hijackthis (HJT) to make changes to your system and HJT will make backups of those changes,
If HJT is not in its own folder, those backups could be lost.

Easy to fix,
* just go to MY COMPUTER > YOUR C:\ DRIVE and create a new folder and name it HIJACKTHIS .
* Now scroll to where you have HJT currently, right click on the HJT icon and select CUT .
* Now open the new folder you just created and right click within that folder and select PASTE .
* Now HJT should reside in C:\HIJACKTHIS\HIJACKTHIS.EXE

Make sure that your Spybot program is currently 1.4, if not you can use the links in my signature to download and install the new version, along with AD-AWARE SE PERSONAL 1.06. Instructions for both here.

Please use the links in my signature to download and install both of the following free programs.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4

* If you have the older version 1.3, remove it via ADD-REMOVE PROGRAMS in the Control Panel.

Go to START/ CONTROL PANEL/ PERFORMANCE AND MAINTAINENCE/ ADD-REMOVE
PROGRAMS
scroll to that program and click on REMOVE.

* During Installation, just follow all the defaults.
* Go to MODE and click on ADVANCED MODE.
* Then to SETTINGS / FILE SETS and take the checkmark out of USAGE TRACKS.
* Then to TOOLS/ HOSTS FILE and then on the top click on ADD SPYBOT S & D HOSTS FILES.
* Then to TOOLS/ IE TWEAKS and put a checkmark in LOCK THE HOSTS FILES
* Then check for UPDATES.
* Then to Immunize. then up at the top by the GREEN SIGN, click on IMMUNIZE.
* Then go to the top to SPYBOT and run a FULL SYSTEM SCAN.
* Then to FIX PROBLEMS and fix all it finds.

Then RE-BOOT your computer.

AD-AWARE SE PERSONAL 1.06

If you have an older version of Ad-Aware, no need to uninstall it, it will prompt you to uninstall it during the set up process

* During installation, follow all the defaults.
* Start the program and CHECK FOR UPDATES
* Choose PERFORM FULL SYSTEM SCAN
* Take the checkmark out of SEARCH FOR NEGLIGIBLE RISK FILES
* Run the scan
* When it is done, RIGHT CLICK ON ONE OF THE ENTRIES/ SELECT ALL/ NEXT and let it remove all that if finds.

Run a couple of online virus scanners, make sure they are set to Auto-Clean or fix what they find, just a note, you will have to run IE for the scans to work.

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

When your done, make sure that you have rebooted normally, run HJT and post a new log please.

I did the Ad-Aware. I stopped on S&D at the step i have in the quote. I do have 1.4 of S&D, but I do not see under Tools a Hosts File option.
Hello dleshin,

When you open Spybot and click on TOOLS, you should see the Hosts files option under IE TWEEKS in the Right Window.

Be sure to run the Online Scanners, rebooting after each scan, also be sure to reboot after running any other scanners like Spybot and Ad-Aware. This will make sure that anything that was removed will be deleted.

Important, Do you have a Logitech Mouse and Keyboard installed on your computer???

Not a keyboard, but I do have a Logitech Mouse. MX1000 I believe. The cordless, laser one.
I just got home so checked again in Spybot for the Hosts. It is not anywhere in there. I went through all options in the Advanced Mode menus. I am looking in the right window on each one. I remember it being in previous versions, but do not see it here. **nevermind, i found it. the menu was off by default, i had to add the icons in**
ran S&D and Adaware. When i lock the hosts file and rebooted, it really hosed my computer. basically, it lost the network card, winxp made me reactivate, i couldnt boot except into safe mode. i undid the host lock and rebooted and its fine

i am concerned that the logitech mouse maybe the culprit

dleshin, There could be another problem because locking the hosts files should not cause you any problems. Did you run the online virus scanners ?? Did you run HJT from Safemode or did you run it booting normally?? I am going to look over your new log and be back as soon as I can. Ken :D
dleshin,

Right click on MY Computer > Then click on Properties> Then Hardware> Then Device Manager and see if your logitech mouse is listed, if not, reinstall the drivers for the mouse.

Are you experiencing any problems that may lead you to think that you are infected with a virus or such, as of right now, your log looks very clean, just a couple of lines to fix.

Run HJT Scan Only, put a checkmark in the following entries, close all open windows and your web browser and click on FIX Checked.

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

When your done reinstalling the mouse if need be and you fix these lines, post a new log please and let me double check it .

Ken :D
The mouse is still listed. I thought I heard problems about the Logitech and WinXP but I do not know the details, maybe thats just with their desktop program (which i do not have on)

I dont think it was locking the host file that was the problem. I unlocked and still had a problem. I had to remove the S&D hosts file list before it would work.

Basically, my computer freezes frequently. It also sometimes will not boot. It goes to start windows and just keeps rebooting. Usually I remove the power and walk away for several hours and when I come back its USUALLY ok…for a bit. I thought it was a temperature thing, but I've been monitoring that and that seems ok.

There has been slowdown also. I do have it set up with 2 users so my mom can check email and I was worried maybe she infected the system with something.

The virus scans show nothing wrong. The spyware has cleared out whatever was found. I have not done the HJT logs or the virus scans from safemode. I did do the spyware from both safe mode and regular. I removed the lines as you suggested, here is the most recent logs. Hardware wise, I'm running an Asus A8V Deluxe board, AMD XP 3000 chip, 2gig Ram, ATI All-inWonder X900XT, Creative Audigy 2, Logitech MX1000 mouse, Cable Modem through the MB's network adapter, 2 HDDs, a CD burner (verbatim), and a sony DVD burner.

Honestly, I think my system should scream. And it seems like its crawling and having hang ups/freezes when it shouldnt. Id didnt when I first put it together (I moved the HDDs from another system and reformated the main drive/reinstalled windows). so, something changed.

anyhow, here's the log, thanks for the help

Here are some free programs and tips for keeping your system up to date, and to help keep all the riff raff out of your system.

*Run CCleaner, this is a very safe program that will clean out all the crapola on your system. It will also remove cookies,
so go to OPTIONS/ COOKIES and move the ones you want to keep from the left window to the right window.

* Now that your clean, we need to erase all possible older infected files that may still be lurking on your system.
* Clean out your TEMP FILES
* This procedure should be run from SAFEMODE for better results.

To Enter SAFEMODE

* Go to START/ SHUT OF YOUR COMPUTER/ RESTART
* As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly, this will bring up a menu.
* Use the UP AND DOWN ARROW KEYS to scroll up to SAFEMODE
* Then press the ENTER KEY ON YOUR KEYBOARD

Now, while in SAFEMODE,

* click on START/ RUN, and type %temp% and press the ok button.

This will open up the temp directory that your machine uses. GO TO EDIT/ SELECT ALL and delete all the contents of that folder.
* Do this for each user of your computer.
* Do this same process for%windir%\temp.

NOW RE-BOOT NORMALLY

DELETE TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES

* Open INTERNET EXPLORER
* Click on the TOOLS MENU
* Then INTERNET OPTIONS
* At the GENERAL TAB, (which should be the first tab you are currently on),
* click on the DELETE FILES BUTTON and put a checkmark in DELETE ALL OFFLINE CONTENT.
* Then press the OK BUTTON . This may take quite a while, so do not be alarmed with how long it takes.
* When it is done, your Temporary Internet Files will now be deleted.

Now Empty your Recycle Bin

* Now we need to TURN OFF> TURN BACK ON SYSTEM RESTORE .

This will remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent
any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: (You will lose all previous restore points
which are likely to be infected)

Turn off System Restore.

* On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
* Click Properties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* Check Turn off System Restore.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.

Reboot your System

Turn ON System Restore.

* ClickProperties.
* Click the System Restore tab.
* UN-Check Turn off System Restore.
* Click Apply, and then click OK.
* Now while in System Restore, create a new Restore Point.

* Make sure that your ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE is up to date and run a full scan at least once aweek.
* If you want to use a free program, try this excellent one.

* WINDOWS UPDATES - Enable Automatic Updates
Right click on MY COMPUTER> GO TO PROPERTIES> AUTOMATIC UPDATES and put a mark in the radio button
DOWNLOAD UPDATES FOR ME BUT LET ME CHOOSE WHEN TO INSTALL THEM.

* Consider surfing the net with the FireFox Browser
It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
When it asks you if you want it to be your default browser, say NO and take the checkmark out of the box to ask you again. After you use this for awhile, you will want to make it your default.

* There companion THUNDERBIRD MAIL program was highly favored in PCWorld Magazine,, this to has a good spam filter and is more secure than Outlook Express.
http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/

* Now go to START/ CONTROL PANEL> PERFROMANCE AND MAINTENANCE> REARRANGE ITEMS ON YOUR HARD DISK TO MAKE PROGRAMS RUN FASTER
This is the Windows Disk Defragger, run this maybe once or twice a month to keep your system running good.
The first time you run it, it may take awhile.

* Here is a free Firewall from Zone Labs, I wouldn't access the internet without it.
