Hello Coyotes, Spybot tells me that a Startup List entry referencing filename "system32.exe", with a blank value, was "Added by the AGOBOT-KU Worm!" I've tried disabling and deleting this entry, but it keeps coming back. I have HijackThis 1.99.1 installed in its own folder and have posted logs to this forum in the past. I'm not sure how big a problem this is, but it seems to be a back door issue. It's pretty clear to me that I should get rid of it. I look forward to your help and advice. TIA. — Maven
This is more of an addendum, rather than a true reply. After some more reading on the forum, I decided that it was now unnecessary to wait for an invitation to post my HijackThis log file for the above problem. You will find my log pasted below. Sorry for being disjointed or incomplete in my request for help.

Hello again,
Here's another update on my situation. Spybot seems able to keep this Startup Entry disabled now that I have the White List entry correct. I also researched this worm and found the following information at the sophos.com site:

W32/Agobot-KU is an IRC backdoor Trojan and network worm which establishes an IRC channel to a remote server in order to grant an intruder access to the compromised computer.

This sounds like something that I definitely don't want living in my computer!

hi

to determine if the worm is still active:

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
  • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
  • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
    Scan Archives
    Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan:Select My Computer
  • This will program will start and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
    • Now click on the Save as Text button:
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

hi

it shows some infection, but no agobots :D

the others seem to be located in sun java's cache:
click start>control panel > sun java > cache tab> clear cache
that should kill those

click start>search> type in the box *.tcf
delete all results
FYI: trojan hunter does not delete trojans when it finds them. it renames those with an unexecuteable extension, tcf
so those files with that extension are trojans

after these steps reboot

do the kaspersky web scanner again

does it find anything ?
Illukka, After following your instructions in your previous reply, a second Kaspersky online scan detected only 1 virus. Here's the scan report: ——————————————————————————- KASPERSKY ON-LINE SCANNER REPORT Thursday, September 22, 2005 10:07:10 Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 2 (Build 2600) Kaspersky On-line Scanner version: 5.0.67.0 Kaspersky Anti-Virus database last update: 22/09/2005 Kaspersky Anti-Virus database records: 150688 ——————————————————————————- Scan Settings: Scan using the following antivirus database: extended Scan Archives: true Scan Mail Bases: true Scan Target - My Computer: A:\ C:\ D:\ E:\ F:\ G:\ Scan Statistics: Total number of scanned objects: 113912 Number of viruses found: 1 Number of infected objects: 1 Number of suspicious objects: 0 Duration of the scan process: 4977 sec Infected Object Name - Virus Name C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\popcaploader.dll Infected: not-a-virus:Downloader.Win32.PopCap.a Scan process completed. ————————————————————————– I also deleted the Startup List entry which got me going on this project in the first place, and I deleted the Spybot settings White List entry which was keeping the entry disabled. So far, the entry is staying gone. I'm now wondering if the filename referenced in that AGOBOT entry "system32.exe" is a problem or not. Since Kaspersky didn't complain about it, I guess that it is NOT a problem. Thanks for your help so far. — Maven
Hi, and also… Since the virus infections are getting fixed, I went to the XP Security Center and turned the 3rd alert notification back on to tell me if anything is messing with my AntiVirus protection. As you can imagine, I had been getting lots of Alerts in the past. Well, the Alerts are still coming telling me that something may be turning off Norton AntiVirus. Since there's still a virus on the last Kaspersky scan, this should probably not be a big surprise. — Maven
hi

first
open hijackthis
click do a system scan only
with all browsers and explorer windows closed
checkmark/fix this item:

O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - http://zone.msn.com/bingame/zuma/default/popcaploader_v5.cab

reboot

post a fresh hijackthis log

hmm this "virus" (its an adware application ) should not mess with any antiviruses .

we could dig deeper if you wish, and if youre willing to post some long logs ?
Illukka, It was good to hear from you again. I feel better knowing that this detection by Kaspersky isn't a virus. In fact, another guru whom I queried called it a false detection because it wasn't actually a virus. On the other hand, I'm not very fond of either adware or spyware. This thing slipped by Ad-Aware, Spyware Blaster, and Spybot. It occurs to me that this might have come in associated with one of my son's online games or message boards. I'm leaning towards dumping it on general principles. Is there a way to tell what it does and who for? I guess that could be asking more questions than the subject is worth. Please confirm that there are no likely bad results from deleting the suspect adware which Kaspersky detected, and then I will go ahead following your previous directions. If you suggest getting rid of it, I'm all for it! The annoying Security Center Alerts saying that Norton AV is turned off are still happening. I'm only slightly worried about that now, but also curious. I'll be happy to post whatever logs that it might take to sort it out, if you're able to stick with me on the project. If you suggest just turning off the Virus Protection Alerts and moving on, that will be ok as well. Since the original AGOBOT question has been disposed of is it permissable to switch to other issues in the same topic? Sorry if I seem indecisive. Thanks again for your assistance and advice. — Maven
Illukka,

Here's a Sunday morning update. After waffling and wavering yesterday, I woke up before dawn and got to work! I dug out a free, newer version of Norton AntiVirus that I had buried in a drawer. After a couple of hours of uninstalling, rebooting, scanning, installing, rebooting, LiveUpdating (4 times), and did I mention rebooting? You get the picture, but the result is I have a newer version of the program up and running. The alerts from the Security Center have gone away. I suspect the problem with the other program was either a Service Pack 2 issue or even, perhaps, a slight question about the legitimacy of my previous Subscription! ;)

Then I moved on to the PopCapLoader Object. I followed your instructions and fixed it in HijackThis. Here's my new log following the fix and yet another reboot:

Hi again, For some reason, the original startup list entry came back again. I deleted it and told Teatimer to remember it. A very persistent item! I tried one more Kaspersky scan to celebrate success, and got this result: —————————————————————————————– Scan Target - My Computer: A:\ C:\ D:\ E:\ F:\ G:\ Scan Statistics: Total number of scanned objects: 114768 Number of viruses found: 1 Number of infected objects: 1 Number of suspicious objects: 0 Duration of the scan process: 4079 sec Infected Object Name - Virus Name D:\HijackThis\backups\backup-20050925-111236-301.dll Infected: not-a-virus:Downloader.Win32.PopCap.a Scan process completed. ——————————————————————————————– I assume this means that, at some point, I should or could delete this backup to avoid future scan detections. Presumably, this is not any actual threat while contained in a HijackThis backup? — Maven
hi

i'm very glad that no malware was causing the norton issues
what more i always recommend using the latest version of whatever antivirus you choose!

you can now safely delete files in D:\HijackThis\backups
it is detected, but as it is a backup made by hijackthis when you fixed the item, it is neutered to be harmless :D

i'm assuming that you system is now clean
so here is the official prevention speech:

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:
  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and reenable system restore here:

    Managing Windows Millenium System Restore

    or

    Windows XP System Restore Guide

Reenable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

See this link for a listing of some online & their stand-alone antivirus programs:

Virus, Spyware, and Malware Protection and Removal Resources

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

For a tutorial on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below:

    Understanding and Using Firewalls

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Spybot - Search & Destroy to remove Spyware , Malware, and Hijackers

  • Install Ad-Aware - Install and download Ad-Aware. ou should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software in conjunction with Spybot.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using Ad-aware to remove Spyware, Malware, & Hijackers from Your Computer

  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.

A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:

Using SpywareBlaster to protect your computer from Spyware and Malware

  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

here are some additional utilities that will enhance your safety
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
  • Winpatrol <= Download and install the free version of Winpatrol. a tutorial for this product is located here:
Using Winpatrol to protect your computer from malicious software
