Hi,
Certain webpages seem to take too long to open. Sometimes the browser itself (Firefox) takes a while to open. Lastly, plain text emails can sometimes take too long to send and checking email can take a long time even when there are none to receive. I keep using AdAware and there's always 1 or 2 things it finds usually trackers.

Please help!!
Thanks

Hello tinpanalley and welcome to TomCoyote. :wavey:

It appears from the HijackThis log that Firefox may have become corrupted. I would recommend uninstalling the version you are running now and downloading the newest version, released yesterday.

I see that you are running msconfig in /auto mode which means that you may have selectively removed some items in the past from the startup procedure. This can be bad if they are malware, so we would like you to re-enable those startup entries by doing the following:

Please click on start < run, and type msconfig and then press enter. When the window opens click on the startup tab and make sure there are checkmarks in every entry. Then press ok until you are out of the program. If it asks to reboot, do not reboot.

Now please create a new Hijackthis Log and post it as a reply to this thread. You may now uncheck all of those items again in msconfig.
Hey Alan,
Thanks for respnding!
1. New Firefox installed
2. Everything in startup checked

Here's the new logfile…

No need to be sorry, better to ask if you don't know what I'm referring to. :)
These are the type of entries you can remove from the log before posting:
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{592AAE05-6369-4687-893A-4D3F722EFE22}\RP330\A0036446.exe -> Adware.BetterInternet : Cleaned with backup

C:\Documents and Settings\Josh\Cookies\josh@hypertracker[1].txt -> Spyware.Cookie.Hypertracker : Cleaned with backup

Your last HijackThis log was clean, I'm just checking to make sure Ewido successfully removed everything it found.
Hey Alan, Thanks for clearing that up. Like I said, the entire log is cookies. Ewido found and cleaned over 1000 different things. So, if you wanna give me an email address, I'll forward the entire log. Is there anything I should be doing going forward? Thanks
Hey Alan, Thanks for clearing that up. There's no system volume info and like I said, the entire log is cookies. Ewido found and cleaned over 1000 different things. So, if you wanna give me an email address, I'll forward the entire log. Is there anything I should be doing going forward? Thanks
Received the file from you but it didn't contain the Ewido log. It had some of my previous fix instructions to you. :scratch:

Contents of email file:

Scanning With Ewido:

  1. Reboot into Safe Mode (tap F8 during bootup, use arrow keys to select Safe Mode, then hit 'enter').
  2. Launch Ewido again.
          * Click on scanner
          * Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
          * While the scan is in progress you will be prompted to clean files, click OK
          * When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the boxes that say "Perform action on all infections"and "Create encrypted backup" then choose clean and click OK.
          * Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
          * Click Save report.
          * Save the report.txt file to your desktop.
  3. Now close ewido security suite.

Step 3
Reboot normally and scan with HijackThis. Post the new log as a reply to this thread. Include the Ewido log. Before replying, open Notepad click Format and uncheck WordWrap.
Please let us know of any complications you had and how the computer is behaving.

If you still have the report.txt file, you can try to send it again.

Open FireFox, click Tools < Options < Web Features and make sure the option for Block Popup windows is checked.

Please download and install Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D according to the following instructions. If you already have these programs, please make sure they are the latest version (Ad-Aware SE Personal 1.06, Spybot Search and Destroy 1.4), than run scans as described below.

Scanning With Spybot S&D;:
  • Downloaded and Install Spybot S&D; accepting the Default Settings.
  • In the Menu Bar at the top of the Spybot window you will see 'Mode'. Make certain that 'default mode' has a check mark beside it.
  • Close ALL windows except Spybot S&D.
  • Click the button to ‘Search for Updates’ then download and install the Updates.
  • Next click the button ‘Check for Problems’
  • When Spybot is complete, it will be showing ‘RED’ entries bold 'Black' entries and ‘GREEN’ entries in the window.
  • Make certain there is a check mark beside all of the RED entries ONLY.
  • Choose ‘Fix Selected Problems’ and allow Spybot to fix the RED entries.
  • REBOOT to complete the scan and clear memory.
  • Do not enable Tea Timer until the log is clean as it will prevent the fix from working.
Scanning With Ad-Aware SE:
  • Download and Install Ad-Aware SE, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan.
  • Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE.
  • Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.
  • Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window.

    • Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:
      • Under the ‘Scanning Engine’:
        • Unload recognized processes during scanning
        • Scan registry for all users instead of current user only
      • Under the ‘Cleaning Engine’:
        • Always try to unload modules before deletion
        • During removal, unload Explorer and IE if necessary
        • Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

  • If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window, click "Next".
  • The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".
  • Save the logfile when asked.
  • REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found.

Scan with Hijackthis and post the new log as a reply to this thread.
Let us know how the computer is behaving now.
Hey Alan, Thanks for all the help. Things seem to be back up to speed now. I do still get the occasional pop-up but, I've noticed that it's on a specific sports site. What can you recommend going forward to avoid the problem I had this time? Thanks, Phil
