Hi, and thank you for your help!

My browser is on occasion being redirected to web sites for WinFixer2005 and WinAntiSpyware2005.

I ran Trend Micro's cwshredder (v2.15) this past week and it informed me that I have been infected by the Vx2.Look2Me Trojan. It said that the item was deleted. However after I reboot my machine:

1. I got a popup error telling me that their was a memory conflict with cwshredder.
2. I ran the tool again and the Vx2.Look2Me Trojan was not deleted.

I noticed that cwshredder was installed as a Windows Service on my machine and set to StartUp type = Automatic. I downloaded HijackThis and deleted the cwshredder service from my system.

After deleting the service, I am no longer getting the memory conflict messages for cwshredder, but my browser is still be redirected, so I assume the virus/trojan is still present.

Thank you again for your help, here is my HijackThis log file:

Greetings and welcome to TomCoyote.org!

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop.

l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing .

This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, Notepad will open with a log. Copy/paste the contents of that log into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Download/install APM

Run APM

Click on each item in the upper window

Then look in the lower window. Check to see which processes are using C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkhf.dll

Post back letting me know which ones are using that DLL.
:)

Step 1:

Please download Process Explorer by Systernals from:

Process Explorer

Also download/unzip KillBox by Option^Explicit from:

Killbox.zip

Step 2:

Download this file and save it to your desktop:

FixVundo Registry File

Copy/paste the text in the Quote box below into Notepad, and save it on the desktop as "killme.txt"

C:\WINDOWS\System32\fhkmp.ini
C:\WINDOWS\System32\fhkmp.bak2
C:\WINDOWS\System32\fhkmp.bak1
C:\WINDOWS\System32\pmkhf.dll

Step 3:

Print out the following instructions as you will not have Internet Access for the rest of this fix.

Reboot in "safe" mode.

The rest of this fix must be done in safe mode.

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe

In the top section of the Process Exlporer screen double-click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of C:\WINDOWS\System32\pmkhf.dll once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of the C:\WINDOWS\System32\pmkhf.dll under winlogon click OK.

If you see any of the files listed below, kill them as well.

Files to look for:
————————–
C:\WINDOWS\System32\fhkmp.ini
C:\WINDOWS\System32\fhkmp.bak2
C:\WINDOWS\System32\fhkmp.bak1

BE SURE TO KILL ONLY THESE FILES!!!

Probably not all of them will be present.

Next double-click on explorer.exe, select the Threads tab, and again click once on each instance of C:\WINDOWS\System32\pmkhf.dll then click the kill button.

If you see any of the files listed below kill them as well.

Files to look for:
————————–
C:\WINDOWS\System32\fhkmp.ini
C:\WINDOWS\System32\fhkmp.bak2
C:\WINDOWS\System32\fhkmp.bak1

BE SURE TO KILL ONLY THESE FILES!!!

Probably not all of them will be present.

Once you have done that click OK again.

Next run Hijack This! and place a check beside each of the following.

O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {52B1DFC7-AAFC-4362-B103-868B0683C697} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkhf.dll

O20 - Winlogon Notify: pmkhf - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmkhf.dll

Now click Fix checked and close HijackThis.

Now double-click on the vundo.reg file that you saved on your desktop earlier and allow it to merge with the registry.

Step 4:

On the desktop, open the "killme.txt" file with Notepad.

Then copy the all file names in the "killme.txt" to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing C (hold the key down, then press C):

Close "killme.txt".

Double click on Killbox.exe and then check the Delete on reboot button.

In Killbox, click File (in the upper left of Killbox), and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

Click the red dot with the white X in it, in the upper right of Killbox, then click "Yes", and "Yes" again.

After the reboot, "copy/paste" a new log file into this thread. :)
Hi Micah_6:8,

I followed all of the instructions in your post above. The only difference is that the registry file was named fixvundo.reg. I double-clicked this as you recommended and was told that the Registry was successfully modified.

Here is the most recent HijackThis Log file that you requested. I'm not sure if you also need a copy of the l2mfix.bat log file as well. If you do, please let me know.

Thanks again for your help,
swim941

Fix this with Hijack This! and reboot:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)

Do you know what this does?

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ufagent] ufagent.exe

Hi Micah_6:8, Thank you again for your response! I'm currently at work, but will fix the entries you mentioned below as soon as I get home. I'm not certain what the "O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ufagent] ufagent.exe" does. Should I fix this entry with HijackThis? Also, in addition to: "O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)", I notice two additional "no name" processes in my log: 1. "O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\PROGRA~1\SPYBOT~1\SDHelper.dll" 2. "O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)" The first I can see is for SpyBot, but should I fix the second one? Also, do you need a new copy of the l2mfix.bat log file? Thanks again, swim941 (I'll be able to fix these and repost a new log as soon as I get home this evening.)
Go ahead and "fix" these:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ufagent] ufagent.exe

Reboot, and post a new Hijack This! log file.
:)
Hi Micah_6:8,

Thanks much for your help!

(1) I fixed the 3 lines you mentioned in your posts above:
1. O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
2. O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)
3. O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ufagent] ufagent.exe

(2) I noticed that there is a folder C:\!Submit with the 4 files that you told me to remove with killbox.exe. Should I simply delete this folder? I searched my machine and could not find these files anywhere else.
1. fhkmp.bak1
2. fhkmp.bak2
3. fhkmp.ini
4. pmkhf.dll

(3) I'm wondering if I should also fix the following entry from my HijackThis! log file? I'm not exactly certain what this does:
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [kmw_run.exe] kmw_run.exe

Sorry about all of the questions, but I'm a little paranoid now. I run McAfee Firewall and VirusScanner along with 3 anti-spyware packages and I was still infected. So I just wanted to be certain. :D

I missed one thing….

CLOSE ALL WINDOWS (even this one) AND PROGRAMS!!!!

Run Hijack This!
Click "Do a systen scan only".
Then "check" the box to the left of these item(s):

O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe

Then click "Fix checked" and close Hijack This! & reboot.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [kmw_run.exe] kmw_run.exe

kmw_run.exe is a process that gets installed with Kensington mice drivers.

C:\!Submit is a folder created by Killbox to preserve a copy of the "killed" files. If you are sure you don't need any of the files in the folder (I'm sure you don't want those files), then you can remove that folder.

Unless you are having other problems, it looks like you've taken care of everything.

M68 :)

Items you may wish to consider to harden your defenses against future infections:

Read "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Download/install IE-Spyad

IE-Spyad puts over 4000 known malicious web sites into IE's "restricted zone" to help prevent you from getting infected.

Check your browser settings at Qualsys.com

A series of "tests" (and suggested fixes) to help tweak IE's settings to help prevent infections when surfing the web.

Follow safe Internet practices:

1. Keep your virus definitions up to date, and scan your system regularly.

2. Don't open email, or download attachments from unrecognized email addresses.

3. Be careful when downloading email attachments, EVEN FROM PEOPLE YOU KNOW! Many virii, worms, and trojans infect a persons system then immeadiately spread themselves to the people in the infected persons addressbook via email attachments.

4. Be careful downloading files from the Internet. Scan all downloaded files with a reliable UP-TO-DATE antivirus program. Scan "zip" files BEFORE unzipping, and scan all unzipped files BEFORE USING THEM.

5. Keep your Windows and IE current with all the latest patches and updates.

Hi Micah_6:8, Everything seems to be running fine! Thanks for all your help! I fixed the "O4 - Startup: PowerReg Scheduler.exe" with HijackThis! and also made sure to get rid of the !Submit folder. :D You guys do great work! I will definitely send a donation to the site for saving me from hours of work reformatting my drive. Just curious would it be possible for any of my other files, pictures, word docs etc. to have been infected by this virus? Take care and keep up the good work! swim941 (Thanks for the tips above. I will be sure to follow them from now on! :D )
We got all of "Winfixer".

To thoroughly check for other things, you can do this:

Please download and run Spybot-Search&Destroy and Ad-Aware; they are the standard programs for finding and cleaning malware off your system. Here are links to both programs, and instructions for their use.

Get Spybot - Search & Destroy from Spybot Search and Destroy
(This is the NEW Version 1.4)
Get AdAware SE Personal from Lavasoft
(This is the NEW Build 1.6)

Download and install these programs if you don't already have them. If you do have them, make sure they are UPDATED AND CONFIGURED AS DESCRIBED here:

Configure Adaware

Configure Spybot

Reboot after running each program.

Please try as many of these free online virus scans of your system as you have time for:

Trend-Micro Housecall

Panda Activescan

Etrust Security Advisor

Bitdefender

Choose "fix" or "clean".

Let them remove any infections found. Reboot after each scan.

:)
Excellent, thanks again Micah_6:8! After my first infection in many years of using a computer and browsing the internet, it tells me that no matter how safe you think you are, it may only take one tiny slip up to cause all sorts of problems. I'm going to use as many security tips as possible that I can get! :) Thanks again and Take care, swim941
