:P I don't think there is too much wrong I have recently gotten rid of a few files myself from browsing your forums. A lot of great help here !!! However, my pc is way too slow, slower than usual. Here is my hjt logfile. Did a microtrend free online scan and result was 7 infections found and something about ISTBAR. :( I will say that i am really nervous about downloading files to do scans etc… But when i can be talked through it i will be fine.

Thank You
Marg

OK Marg, sorry to keep you waiting we are extremely busy :( Since you did your maintenance, and you admit to being a little nervous, I wish to give you a good cleaning and get rid of ISTBAR in the process. I use freeware products and will include easy to read tutorials for using them. I may seem to be over explaining but I want you to feel comfortable with the process. How fast we complete this depends on you.

1) First download this cleaner from here http://www.ccleaner.com/ by default it will install to C:\Program Files and that will be fine. You can allow a shortcut to the desktop and make sure you update it. Now review this tutorial: http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp Wait until I ask you to run it later.

2) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php (great free programs that many, many folks use)
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

Here are tutorials for using these programs if you wish to view them:
Spybot TeaTimer will stop the HJT fix, if you wish to use TT for additional protection, wait until we have finished our cleanup and you can activate it then…Thanks.

3) Ewido scan: This may look a little confusing but follow the directions one item at a time. Once you have the scan running, get a cup of tea, first time may take an hour. I see you have the newest Adobe, so here is a .pdf tutorial for you if you wish to view it:
http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/Tutorials/…oQuickGuide.pdf

Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.
  • Install ewido security suite
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
  • The program will now go to the main screen
You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click update
  • Then click on Start Update
The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.
Ewido manual updates

Once the updates are installed do the following:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
    • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
    • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
    • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
    • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop.
Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

Open HijackThis and choose "Do a system scan only" then check the box in front of these line items:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = C:\WINDOWS\about.htm
O2 - BHO: ohb - {999A06FF-10EF-4A29-8640-69E99882C26B} - blank (file missing)
Begin2Search adware variant (old)
O16 - DPF: {42F2C9BA-614F-47C0-B3E3-ECFD34EED658} (Installer Class) - http://www.ysbweb.com/ist/softwares/v4.0/ysb_download.cab
ISTbar see this>>> http://www.spywareguide.com/product_show.php?id=572

Close all programs but HJT and all browser windows, then click on "Fix Checked"

5) Run CCleaner, clean under Windows and Applications, then when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results in this same thread along with any feedback you have. Let me know how the puter is running now.

Thanks…pskelley

:wavey: Thank you so much for your help psKelly and my computer is running a bit better than it previously was. Here is my txt file from ewido and my new hjt logfile. There was one file i ignored in ewido scan because i wasn't sure what it was.

Hi Marg, You are very welcome, I am glad I could help. Great job following those instructions  Let's look this over from top to bottom. There was one file

i ignored in ewido scan because i wasn't sure what it was.

That is a cookie placed to track what you do and where you go. I consider it spyware but it's not much of it. I would return to that folder: C:\Documents and Settings\Marg\Cookies\ and clean out all of the cookies there on a regular basis. Some cookies are needed for secure passwords, logins, etc. You can limit all third party cookies and override the proceedure here:
Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Privacy > Edit. There you can list cookies you wish to block and cookies you wish to allow. Search Google if you need more information.

I will mention quickly that Ewido did a great job. The trial which give you realtime protection uses some resources but that will stop after two weeks. Make sure the program is turned off after that, but you can keep and update the scanner if you wish. While the trial is running, it may slow you down a tad.

HJT Log: Scan saved at 11:34:15 PM, on 9/18/2005. The log appears clean of malware. A few thoughts and suggestions.
You are running Incredimail which uses abundant resources. Try turning it off to see if it makes a difference in your operating speed.
Use: http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/ to stop some programs from booting everytime you startup and might only use them once in a while. They can be started by others means suggested in the link.

Hello Phil i have done as you requested and read some of the tutorials and turned off some features i had on start up like incredimail etc….. and there is a big difference. However, in one tutorial it is suggested that to be safer download spyware blaster or spyware gaurd and i was wondering even though it says it is safe to have them with spybot is it really necessary and i also have spyware doctor 3.0. Just wanted to extend my great appreciation for your help and i have included a hjt logfile for you to have a look and a new ewido scan also. By the way you give great instructions.

Thank You
Marg

Thanks Marg, It's hard to give you a answer as it is a complex question. If a software purveyor would sell us a program that would 100% guarantee nothing could get through it, then we could dump all programs but that one and they would be richer that Bill Gates I use Ad-aware and Spybot (but not TeaTimer) I go to bad places checking logs for folks and I run MCafee VSO and Zone Alarm with a Linksys router. My other programs are all freeware (including ZA) SpywareBlaster, SpywareGuard and IE-Spyad. I do not run Spyware Doctor and know little about it. You will have to collect information and then decide what will run best with your computer configuration. Since there are no 100% guarantees, shoot for the best you can do with the advice of those experts.
Here is information that might help:
http://www.networkworld.com/reviews/2005/0…op-spyware.html
http://www.resnet.umn.edu/html/rn_security.html
http://www.staysafeonline.info/home-tips.html I could go on and one. Don't dump your antivirus protection, but do know that this is more and more about the $$$$ and the "legitimate" businesses who pay this lowlife:
http://news.com.com/Report%3A+Cons%2C+not+…ent&tag;=nl.e703

Hummm…Ewido scan looks clean :D as does your HJT log.

Thanks…Phil
Thanks again Phil And I Will Collect Some More Info And Decide What Is Best. I Am Going To Become More Computer Knowledgeable To. I Am Attending School In January For a 2 Year Program As A "Computer Support Specialist" So Wish Me Luck. Thanks Again Marg
