Any help appreciated. This is from my daughter's machine, which is showing many icons and programs as iTunes, and starting iTunes whenever they are clicked on. I've already deployed Kazaabegone, but there are are a number of exe files i'm pretty sure are malign.

Adware\InstaFinder_inst.exe
Adware\fsg_4203.exe
Adware\fsg_4104.exe
p2pNetworking
a couple of dialers

to name a few

My guess is that her iPod and Freecom backup disc are infected as well, though I don't have them at present.

Where do I start?
What precautions to stop her doing it again - believe me I've tried!!

Hi Illuka,

Thanks for your response.

Since my last post, I've run PestPatrol over the whole C drive, and it identified Claria.Dashbar, which I've now also quarantined.

Fingers and everything else crossed that you can get me an answer. HJT log follows -

hi

i am not a big fan of pest patrol, althouhg i have a license for it

could you post the contents of the report it makes?

lets try a more trustworthy trojan scanner:

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Run Ewido:
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop
Close Ewido

reboot

please post reports from both pest patrol and ewido

One thing I meant to add, which shows how my concentration was slipping; - while in Safe Mode, all the desktop shortcuts, except Recycle Bin and HP Share-to-Web Upload Folder, were showing as iTunes icons, an would start iTunes on those I tried. Don't know if that info is relevant or helps.
hi the pest patrol list looks basically harmless. PP does detect a lot of stuff most other security programs dont bother to detect. at the same time it misses or fails to detect many really malicious files that some other scanners detect and remove without any fuss in my opinion thats #¤%¤ well lets ignore it has your anti virus detected anything? again, i have no clue what has changed the icons, the system likely has corrupted at some stage could you check the properties of the icons ( right click>properties ) what does it point to? checkmark/fix this item with hjt: O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9394EDE7-C8B5-483E-8773-474BF36AF6E4} - (no file) reboot post a fresh log
Hi Illukka, Thanks for the comments. Your views on PP noted - I'll try and get better advice in future. You wrote: has your anti virus detected anything? No!! again, i have no clue what has changed the icons, the system likely has corrupted at some stage could you check the properties of the icons ( right click>properties ) what does it point to? Tried Ad-Aware Personal icon, right click>properties shows the correct folder and exe file, but double click, and iTunes starts!! This typical of all the icons showing the iTunes logo (ie, most of them). checkmark/fix this item with hjt: O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9394EDE7-C8B5-483E-8773-474BF36AF6E4} - (no file) reboot post a fresh log I'll get this under way and report back.

Hi, Thought I'd check back on the previous virus scan ('complete test' in AVG), and found the last three entries in the report read C:\WINDOWS\system32\user32.dll Result Change Status Changed C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll Result Change Status Changed C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntoskrnl.exe Result Change Status Changed Again, I don't know whether this is significant, but all 5 reports going back to beginning of August have these same entries. (none available before that) Any news on whether the last logs I posted have shown anything? I fully appreciate you guys are very busy and giving your time for free, but I am anxious to get this machine back in working order for my daughter in university. Thanks in advance for your help.
hi the avg report files, did you by chance install new updates to the system when the changes occurred ? also the d****d i tunes, what if you tried uninstalling it, then reinstalling
Now there's a good idea - and I'm kicking myself for not thinking of it first. However, small problem - the only d####d iTunes, iPod related entries in Program Install/ Uninstall are iPod for Windows User Guide, and iPod System Software Updater 2.1  An obvious alternative is to install the latest iTunes download (version 5), but looking at the various message boards, there appear to be considerable issues with files becoming inaccessible due to the way DRM is screwed down so tight. I'd be happier installing the current version back over the top, but there doesn't seem to be anyway of tracking down the setup file (version 4.7.1). The more I look at this, the more I'm coming to believe that some d####d iTunes installation or update screw-up has caused this problem, but I'm still trying to find the path out of the jungle. I'd welcome any suggestions…
