Slow start-up

Hello JvdV sorry for the wait we are extremely busy To try and answer your question, the big internet security suites like Norton surely slow down the computer. Installing SP2 slows it down, running programs you never use everyday slows it down, and surely, malware will slow it down. I could give you links, but why don't you try searching http://www.google.com/ for say "how to speed up my computer" without the quotes. You will be surprised at how much information there is. I do see some clutter like this: R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = and this: R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing that can be removed but this is not causing your computer to slow. HJT can't see everything, and I can run some time consuming scans to look for stuff that may be hiding, but I think if it is there it would be showing you more symptoms than a slow computer. I will say I would be glad to give you those scans if you wish.
Things like lack of maintenance, not enough RAM, even dust in the computer and fans and on and on can slow your computer down. I would suggest you try a free diagnostic here: http://www.pcpitstop.com/ and they will help you understand the results here: http://pcpitstop.invisionzone.com/ Now if you wish me to start scans to look for hidden malware, post a new HJT log in this same thread expressing those wishes. Please also do your best to describe what is happening (other than a slower computer…lol) and tell me about any error message you are receiving "word for word". Now if you post again, you need to update your log to version 1.99.1. You can do that from within like this: Open HJT > Open the Misc Tools section > Scroll to Check for update online > Follow instructions. OK Sir, thanks for the information and the new log. I want to point out that Ken545, one of our experts suggested that your issues were not malware on Jan 18 2005, 08:50 AM and gave you advice at that time. My initial observations are the same as him. I will however give you the scans to run. Understand that I am looking for malware. I also see little running at startup that should be slowing you down. Seems this problem has existed for a while and is very likely not malware related.

1) Open Hijackthis.
Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list…" Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

2) Download CCleaner from this link: http://www.ccleaner.com/ Review the instructions http://www.ccleaner.com/help/tour1.asp and please do not run it until I ask you to.

3) Download, update, configure and run these two programs: http://tomcoyote.org/aawsb.php
The newest version of Ad-aware is 1.06 and Spybot 1.04. Even if you have these programs, use the link to get the newest version, update and configure them as in the link. Run Spybot first, reboot then run Ad-aware. Both programs back up what they remove so delete anything the programs say should be removed.

4) Ewido scan:
Please download Ewido Security Suite it is a trial version of the program.

• Install ewido security suite
• Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop double-click it.
• The program will now go to the main screen

You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.

• On the left hand side of the main screen click update
• Then click on Start Update

The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update Ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:

• Click on scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• NOTE: During some scans with ewido it is finding cases of false positives.**
  • You will need to step through the process of cleaning files one-by-one.
  • If ewido detects a file you KNOW to be legitimate, select none as the action.
  • DO NOT select "Perform action on all infections"
  • If you are unsure of any entry found select none for now.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop.

Now close ewido security suite.
**(Ewido for example has been flagging parts of AVG Anti-Virus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk")

5) Run CCleaner, Windows & Applications when you run the registry cleaner (Issues) you will be prompted to backup before you can remove stuff, make sure you do. Then restart the computer and post a new HJT log and the Ewido scan results and the Add\Remove programs list in this same thread along with any feedback you have.

One thing that struck me was that Spybot gave a "bad checksum" after updating the immunization file;

A lot of folks are having that issue with Spybot, you never gave me your location, but the download failed. Open Spybot and click on search for updates. On the Update page, next to "Search for Updates" you see the mirror you are downloading from. Use the dropdown menu and choose another mirror perhaps closer to your location. There are eight choices, once you have download the update successfully, a green checkmark will indicate success. Make sure you Immunize after that. Total should be 6985 blocked bad products.

Some items appear to be in C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\Quarantine I suggest you navigate to the quarantine folder and delete the contents (not the folder)

C:\System Volume Information\_restore << once we have finished with this cleanup, turn off System restore, reboot then turn it back on to create clean System Restore files, instruction here:

Uninstall list: I will not recognize all of these, I am looking for obvious malware. I suggest, while you have them in front of you that you uninstall any programs you no longer use. Hitman Pro: This must be a valid program, but I do not know it. As far as I can see it is a valid program. I thought I was looking at German but it must be Dutch. I suppose Ewido is detecting something in error in the program, script or something??

Kazaa Media Desktop 2.0: Not sure what this is, I see Kazaa, I think file sharing, here is some information: http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/

Spybot - Search & Destroy 1.2: Out of date, version you should be running is 1.4 http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

SpywareBlaster v3.2: Out of date, should be version 3.4. All Protections must be disabled, then the old program must be uninstalled. Then you can download the new version http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html Then UPDATE and ENABLE all protection.

Nothing else jumps out at me.

Your last reply to my post was on September 20. I wasn't able to follow up immediately (sorry for that) and therefore the topic was closed (I presume). However, my problem still exists and has even become worse. I therefore open this new topic. Please see below for the latest reply (dated Sept. 20, 2005).

I can report as follows:
1. The Spybot update problem has been solved. I immunized and ran S&D; it worked fine and gave clean results.
2. As to Ewido: "genegeerd" means "ignored". And yes, "Schoongemaakt met een backup" means "removed with back-up".
3. C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\Quarantine was clean (and still is).
4. Before I created clean system restore files, I tried to restore to various previous statuses. None of my efforts resulted in a succesful restore. I cleaned the System Restore afterwards.
5. Hitman Pro is a programme which launches a whole suite of cleaning and checking programmes, such as Ad-Aware, Spybot, Spywareblaster, CD Shredder, etc. I think it is a safe application.
6. I deinstalled the programmes that I no longer use and/or that are not necessary to be started up upon booting the PC. No noticeable results from this.
7. I defragmented my hard disc (with quite some trouble), but after a succesful defragmentation no meaningful decrease in my boot-up time.
8. The time needed for booting my PC has apparently become worse. Since your last reply I get the Windows message "Security Warning: Your system may be at risk as Internet Security is not switched on" (or something like that). This is caused by the fact that the system boots up so slowly that it takes very long before Norton Internet Security is activated. At a certain stage Windows shows the security warning and a few seconds later it dissappears again, i.e. at the moment Norton Internet Security has finalised its activation. This is something that never happened during the booting process in the past.

I hope you can help me any further.

Topic re-opened at request of JvdV

Hello again JvdV, I am looking at your situation again at the request of our administrator. I want to say that what I do is remove malware from computers. I will take another look but as a result of my look back over what we did and what Ken did earlier, I believe something other than malware is responsible. Having said all of that, I wil take another look. For starters, please update ewido and run a scan, then post those results along with a HJT log that is run AFTER the ewido scan. As soon as possible after you post these items, I will let you know if I see anything. Along with these logs, please tell me as much about what you think your issues are as you can, include any error messages you are receiving "word for word".

OK, a couple of things first, Ewido really tells us nothing, did you make sure to update it before you ran it? I also see nothing in the HJT log that should be causing you any problems. I have to assume that you followed all the directions prior to that, I would like you to look back over all of the instructions and if there is anything you did not do, let me know.

We will be running some scans to see if we can find anything the other scans have not been able to locate. This scan does not remove anything but it may show us something the others have not.

Please download http://www.mwti.net/products/mwav/mwav.asp
Doubleclick the file.

This scan takes around 3 hours to finish when set to scan everything.

Put a check next to the items below before scanning:

*Memory
*Startup Folders
*Drive - All Local Drives
*Folder - then click "browse" to change the directory to C: (default is C:\Windows)
*Registry
*System Folders
*Services
*Include Sub-Directory
*Scan All Files

Please make sure ALL of these are checked, then press the scan button. This will take hours to complete.

**NOTE*** Sometimes MWav will pause and it appears to be finished, but it isn't done. Just let it run.

Highlight the portion of the scan that lists infected items and hold CTRL + C to Copy then paste it here. The whole log with be extremely big so there is no way to copy the whole thing. I just need the infected items list.

Thanks for that MWAV log, I was hoping something bad would jump out at me but such is not the case. MWAV does not like anything but much of what it finds is ok. If I saw some stuff I did not know and could validate it as bad, we would remove it with Killbox.

1) I would like to see if ewido finds anything else in safe mode. Use these instructions and run Ewido once you are in safe mode, then reboot to normal mode, save and post that log.

2) Let's run a few scans to see if they will pick up anything. Please run all three of these free online scans. Make sure you set them to scan the complete system and to delete or quarantine anything they locate. If anything is found that they cannot delete or quarantine, post the name and path of that item.

3) Download Silent Runners.vbs from the following link: http://www.silentrunners.org/
Right-click the link and choose save as. Save it to the desktop and then double-click on it. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run. When the scan is finished, a message will pop up and a logfile will have been created on the desktop. Please post the entire contents of this logfile for me to see. When the script is done running, you will receive a popup informing you as such. Please wait for the script to run completely.

4) I would like to know if you remember, when these issues started. Could the issues co-incide with:
.the download of any Windows Updates
.the download of service pack 2
.the installation of one of the programs you have on board.
I am looking for any information, any error messages, anything that might help. If Silent Runners does not provide a clue, that just about rules out malware, and I fear you will have to look elsewhere for a solution. Perhaps some hardware is going bad? Let's see what happens as a result of the above.
